For your own purple sake I hope the past is not a reliable indicator.
Well if that's the case, I don't mind the dockers making finals for 4 years in 2022-25, just like they did under Ross Lyon from 2012-5.

I want Freo to make finals in 2023, even if it's an Elim final. Dockers only made back to back finals or finals for 2 years in a row only once.

Yep the Ross Lyon era of 2012-5.
I don't agree we have zero chance.
Well...

Carlton's weakness isn't a physical one. It's a mental one.

Once Carlton become consistent on game day and close out the close losses, they will contend.

You know that.

Fair enough, zero is a bit harsh.

After never having seen my team with a spoon in my lifetime until last year, you aren't missing much.
Well you are fortunate. Take away the last 2 or 3 seasons at North, it's not that bad.

Prior to 2021 and 2022, the last time North Melbourne got a wooden spoon was 1972

Not really.

O'Meara was taken in the mini draft at 17 and was an underage All-Australian.

He'd won a local football Senior Grand Final BOG medal at 16.

Daniel Wells was second in the Sandover at Reid's age.

It's not unprecedented. I think his total game and physical attributes are what appeal more than how good he is at 17.

O'meara a classic "never lived up to the hype" type player.

Him coming through really changed the way the draft and junior footy was watched. It was the birth of what the draft is now in terms of analysing young players.

Just a plodder now. Also had really poor management advising him throughout his career.

Carlton are zero chance for a flag next year. They need to make finals first, then win a final. After that, they can start hoping they can go all the way the next year as hardened finals teams will eat them alive.
Can I just say, I absolutely love this new rivalry. It's been the best thing since the random Doggies vs. Giants rivalry.
It's not because of location or multiple big grand finals played against each other.
It's just built gradually from a little bit of friction. It's turning into quite the little inferno.

Well he is 28 years old now and at the dockers.

I am not asking for a miracle.

But if he becomes a sold b grade mid averaging around 20-25 disposals a game, it's good for me

I reckon the knee injuries he had early on at the GC had more of an impact on his career than anything else.

I'm not saying I rate the Blues as a genuine flag contender just yet, but Richmond and the Western Bulldogs disprove your theory.

Both had more finals experience than Carlton. Richmond was weight of numbers with their losses, Bulldogs had players playing who had won finals for the club. Carlton have no one except a few recruits and they aren't their best players.

Maybe they don't need to win one first but they definitely need to start playing them before they are a contender. I think it's telling that they couldn't handle the experienced Pies in Rd 23 last year which was like a final.

Haven't opened this thread in a while. Before going through it, I'm presuming there's quite a few people (reasonably) leaving Freo, Carlton and St Kilda outside of the eight (or at least questioning their credentials), with the same few fans of these teams engaging in their annual tradition of losing their minds about it?

I’ve got carlton rising, comfortably into the 8.
collingwood to slide out.

Port and GCS also to push up but may not make finals.
Dogs and Tigers at risk, and maybe freo

injuries will have a big say, so will finalise my thoughts on the eve of the season

I had St kilda 11th on last years ladder prediction and St kilda fans abused me over it for months. Come round 5 I got about 20 tags saying that they were going to win the premiership and that I was "Re****ed" my only response was "It's a long season" and they ended up finishing 10th xD

I didn't see what all the hype was about back then and I see it even less here now. 🤷‍♂️

Saints have a good young team? I think it’s actually quite middle of the road with a number of question marks over it, plus a coach who’s never been known for his offensive tactics. Quite the opposite actually, so the comparison to Collingwood doesn’t make much sense to me.
Ross used tactics that suited the way the game was played at the time.

His fingerprints were all over Sydney’s 2005 flag, and then the “frontal-pressure” that he implemented in 2009 was brilliant, and clubs have largely used it ever since, while by the time he finished at Freo, I’m pretty sure they were playing a much more attacking brand of footy.

Top 4 for both offence and defence before they got crunched by injuries, I believe.

And at his presser recently he sounded like he was well on top of how footy is played these days (having analysed it on Footy Classified for two years) and that he believes with the stand rule in particular, that it’s all about being a running team now.

He also said that while doing his due-diligence on the club that those in the industry he spoke to about us told him that our list well-and-truly had the capabilities of being an elite type running team, so clearly he intends on having us play very differently to how some of his teams have played in the past.

It sounds like we’re already doing match-sim, so maybe we will do a Collingwood, and hit the ground running, with a new game-plan that re-invigorates the group.

Or not. Only time will tell.

Lyon always wanted elite runners so they could chase, tackle and flood the whole game. Not sure much has changed yet.
