Yes, and you thought Geelong would win the flag in 2022 after an 83 point thumping in a prelim in 2021.

Geelong didn't go back to back in their halcyon days. They sure as hell won't be doing in next year.

You guys should finish Minor Premiers and get to a prelim minimum. Anybodies game from there though. Gawndy seems like too good a combo.

Richmond will surge. I think the AFL are done with their unfair free kick differential plus we have Taranto and Hopper with some good young kids without losing too much talent to retirement.

Melbourne/Geelong/Richmond/Carlton top 4. Brisbane are overrated, barely beat us with no midfield last year. Their best chance was 2020. Sydney will not come back from that GF loss easily. I think they will go backwards next year and then load up and win in a couple years. Their spine is simply not good enough.

In dynasties past the top teams tend to keep playing each other for a long time.

Melbourne will be up there and they were rightfully humbled as a supporter base like we were in 2018. Their top end talent is right up there but their issues are cultural. You can’t belt and humiliate your mates and ever have it the same again.

They also lack a quality key forward. Ben brown is terrible. Max gawn and Brodie grundy will spend time down there and cause some issues against the lesser clubs but they are not forwards. Fritsch is elite and Kozzie pickett will be a star but it won’t be enough.

Van rooyen looks like a decent prospect but is 2-3 years off playing consistent quality football.

I stumbled across the 1997 AFL ladder tonight. Not much between most of the teams with second last having a respectable 8 wins. My suspicion is we'll have something similar this season as, to my mind, teams like Hawthorn, West Coast, Adelaide, Essendon etc may not look great but doubt any will win less than 6 matches.

Am I the only one scratching my head as to the relevance of a ladder from 1997? Why not 1996 or 1998?

Our forward-line won't be worse than 2021 when we had one of the most dominant finals series ever.

For Melbourne it's all about our ball movement. It wasn't the forward-line that was the issue in parts of 2022, it was the ball movement.

I think McDonald was a big loss when he went down mid season, he and or Van Rooyen will add a better dimension

So I was right then and I think I might be right this time 😃

Happy New Year everyone. My first ladder prediction for 2023. Dogs and Swans from last year to miss the 8 this year. Richmond finishes minor premiers. GC makes finals for the first time ever. Swans big Grand Final loss will hurt them. Eagles to 'win' the wooden spoon. Dockers to finish 3rd. Hinkley will get the sack after Port finishes bottom 4.

1. Richmond
2. Geelong
3. Fremantle
4. Melbourne
5. Collingwood
6. Brisbane Lions
7. Carlton
8. Gold Coast Suns
9. Western Bulldogs
10. Adelaide
11. Sydney Swans
12. Essendon
13. Hawthorn
14. Port Adelaide
15. GWS Giants
16. St Kilda
17. North Melbourne
18. West Coast Eagles

I'm finding it really hard to get a read on where Port and Collingwood will go this season. Port had a Barry Crocker start to last season and were never a real chance of bouncing back - with a hard draw this year and with Hinkley in the last chance corral we could be anywhere from 4th to 14th.

Collingwood were pretty much kissed on the pecker with so many close wins last season so will they have the same fortune, I can see them like Port being anywhere from 4th to 14th as well.

Agree on Port, you could be right about Collingwood as we won't win that many close games again however our close wins against mediocre opposition this year could become larger wins next year

Top 4 will be a race between

Richmond, Carlton, Brisbane & Melbourne

Gold Coast & Port will make the 8, as will Geelong & Sydney

Sorry to all the Docker fans, but they’ll be the big slider with a much tougher draw & limited attacking options.

I also have Collingwood & the Bulldogs just missing.

Not sure about the Bears

Lock for top 4 imo…Gunston is a huge get and is an upgrade on McStay. Hipwood was coming off an acl last season. He will be much better in 2023. Cameron, bailey and Rayner add serious class to that forward line.

Dunkley and Ashcroft to a lesser extent will also be huge inclusions to their midfield. Will allow Neale to get even better.

Harris Andrews had a down year last season and Marcus Adams, who was playing the best footy of his career before he got injured late in the season will be back to help their backline. Kiddy coleman had a breakout season last year and will also only get better. He’s their “quarterback” and is pure class.

No excuses for Fagan and the Lions next season. Their team is primed to challenge for the flag.
