Lock for top 4 imo…Gunston is a huge get and is an upgrade on McStay. Hipwood was coming off an acl last season. He will be much better in 2023. Cameron, bailey and Rayner add serious class to that forward line.

Dunkley and Ashcroft to a lesser extent will also be huge inclusions to their midfield. Will allow Neale to get even better.

Harris Andrews had a down year last season and Marcus Adams, who was playing the best footy of his career before he got injured late in the season will be back to help their backline. Kiddy coleman had a breakout season last year and will also only get better. He’s their “quarterback” and is pure class.

No excuses for Fagan and the Lions next season. Their team is primed to challenge for the flag.
Something wrong if they don't finish top.
2 home finals should see them reach the GF.

Think the Dogs are being fairly underated by some after the vast changes to list and coaching this off season, (Hopefully) will surprise people with the structual changes both on and off the field.

1. Brisbane
2. Melbourne
3. Geelong
4. Dogs
5. Sydney
6. Carlton
7. Richmond
8. Gold Coast
9. Collingwood
10. Essendon
11. Freo

What changes were made to coaching?

What changes were made to coaching?
Lade bought in to look after our midfield.
Webb moved to stoppages/opposition analysis coach
Martin bought in as development coach
We are yet to announce our replacement for Chris Mapel who was our GM of football (coaching, pm/ops manager) - although I expect his replacement announced soon.

We still need help with our forward line coaching, but doubt we'll see an improvement there until end of 2023.

Big season for the Dogs

Have been underwhelming since their flag & pressure on Bevo after self destructing after round 1 presser last season.

Appear to have a more balanced squad with better key position depth.

If they Dogs aren't challenging for top 4 by round 16 I'd suspect the calls for Bevo's head to be loud, I was never a fan of his recent re-signing, should of been made to sweat a little after the complete crap he served up last season.

In my opinion Dogs have one of the better lists in the competition

Should be challenging

I'm more interested in what vast changes to their list are improving them? Dunkley out is a bigger loss than anything coming in IMO

Dunkley is a big loss but the Dogs biggest strength is their midfield. Bont played a lot of 2022 injured and was still quality. Macrae. Libba. Bailey smith are a graders. Tim English is a top 3 ruck in the comp and is basically another midfielder

Ugle-Hagar showed in the back half of the season what he can become. He is a massive key for them. If he can reach his potential, a forward line of naughton, JUH & Sam Darcy has the potential to be the best in the comp in 3 years time. Lobb will also be a good pick up for them whilst Darcy develops.

Their biggest issue has been down back. Alex Keath and Ryan Gardner are not good enough key defenders. Liam Jones will be a good pick up. His last season at the Blues was underrated. He’s a very good one on one defender.

The bulldogs will finish in the top 8..can they finish top 4 and challenge?? I think they are behind the likes of the cats. Tigers. Lions and demons.

The guy said they have made vast changes to their list that have improved them. Most of your post is about players already there.
Lobb? I've seen him up close for three years. There is no bigger flat track bully in the AFL.

Yeah, and the biggest question mark is on whether Bevo can get them to compete consistently.

How exactly did the lions improve their already atrocious defence. Aging midfield with no real goal kicking scoreboard pressure. Average Ruck and a couple of dogey forwards. Please someone explain how this club improves. Every year they serve up exactly the same gameplan, there’s 6 teams better atm and by round 16 they might be 8 or so better. Even the cats with 12 guys in their 30s improve from from last year. Pies vs whoever is the next best is your 2023GF

He's a strange one Bevo. He gets a lot of tickets for being a premiership coach, but he's still a bit too much of an artiste for me to want him at my flagless club

“Atrocious defence”- Marcus adams missed the last month of the season and finals due to concussion. He was a huge loss. Him being back will benefit harris Andrews massively. Darcy Gardner has a number 3 defender is good enough. Kiddy coleman was a massive improver and will be an elite half back. Starcevich is one of the best lockdown medium-small defenders in the comp.

“Ageing midfield with no real goal kicking scoreboard pressure”- josh dunkley is only 25 and one of the best mid/forwards in the comp. He had 5 games in 2022 kicking multiple goals. Will Ashcroft the number 1 pick in the draft will play from round 1 and make their midfield better. He’s only 18. The likes of Zac Bailey (23) and cam Rayner (23) will play more midfield. They can also kick goals. Hugh McCluggage (24) is also an elite midfielder that can play inside and outside.

“A couple of dodgy forwards”- hipwood came back from an acl last season. He will be much better in 2023. Joe Daniher whilst inconsistent at times is still a dangerous key forward. The Gunston recruitment is massive for the lions and will only help the two guys above. Charlie Cameron is one of if not the best small forward in the comp. Their forward line is easily a top 4 forward line in the comp.

The dunkley and Gunston recruitments coupled with Will Ashcroft makes them a considerably better side than 2022 where they missed the top 4 by 1 game. They will make a prelim in 2023.

It should be extremely close competition in 2023. I got probably top 3-4 teams, then 10 team fighting for remaining finals spots (could be shuffled randomly) and then bottom 3-4. As usual injuries will play important role in final ladder.

I am biased Suns fan.

1. Lions. Great acquisitions. They got depth, got finals experience, should be hungry to make the final step. Need to improve team defence. Adams still not training is a worry.
2. Cats. Unbelievable regeneration of the list while competing every year. Will old players still be hungry?
3. Melbourne. They should come back strongly after disappointing last year. Still quality everywhere except some question marks about forward line. Play van Rooyen.
4. Tigers. Taranto, Hopper should improve midfield significantly. Can we see Martin back to his best?
5. Dogs. Time for them to step up. Too good list to make up numbers. Unless Beveridge will screw it up.
6. Carlton. Very good list on paper. Time to deliver. Can they play like a team? Walsh and Hewitt recovering from back surgeries is a bit of worry.
7. Suns. Time to play finals. How good can King, Powell and Weller be after coming back from serious injuries? Rowell and Anderson entering 4th season – time to step up to another level in the middle.
8. Swans. A step back after hammering in GF. Midfield not big/strong enough.

9. Freo. Still not impressed by their forward line.
10. Port. Jonas, Boak not getting younger. Not sold on JHF and Rioli making Port better next year. Time for a new coach.
11. Collingwood. Dream run is over. Old players getting older, opposition will learn from last year.
12. Saints. Crazy Lyon will make them play better, play hard, defend hard. Not a lot of top talent. Assessing and sorting the list by a new coach.
13. Crows. Burgess has them in great shape, play hard, contested footy. Midfield still not good enough, average defence too.
14. Essendon. A lot of talent with potential. Assessing and sorting the list by a new coach.
15. Giants. Best 22 still very good. Poor depth. Assessing and sorting the list by a new coach.
16. North. The list is better than what they showed last year. Clarko will make them play better.
17. Eagles. Just too many old players past their time. Rebuild needs to speed up.
18. Hawks. Some good players and potential talent but poor depth. With some injuries it could turn ugly for the youngest team.

Because our biggest issues this year was KPP we have now got a #1 KPD which will help Gardner/Keath the latter who was playing hurt and added in a genuine KPF/2nd Ruck which was our other biggest weakness when it came to teams getting run on's against us.

Dunkley is a good player but giving his kicking issues isn't as big of a loss as it seems when you look at what is still there

Pretty obvious top 6 with the premier coming from this group of teams.

Any two of Freo, Pies, Suns or Dogs to round out the top 8 but not good enough to win the competition.

Bombers, Port and Saints just middle of the road but could sneak into the 8 with everything going right for them.

Final 5 vying for the spoon with the Hawks more than likely at this stage. Injuries for this lot will determine who finishes last.

1. Lions
2. Tigers
3. Dees
4. Blues
5. Cats
6. Swans
7. Freo
8. Pies
9. Suns
10. Dogs
11. Bombers
12. Port
13. Saints
14. Crows
15. Giants
16. Roos
17. Eagles
18. Hawks

Lock for top 4 imo…Gunston is a huge get and is an upgrade on McStay.
Gunston is slowing down. He struggled to get separation against the better defenders in 2022, but he should get it easier at Lions.

Still likely to be an upgrade on McStay, but he filled his boots against North and the Suns in 2022, and only kicked 11 goals against the top 8 for the year, so he’s a watch.

Agree. They have the talent on paper to win it all.

They are strong in all areas of the ground and have enhanced their list over the off season.

Still have question marks over their ability to win at the MCG although their semi final against the Dees was a very good step forward in this regard.
