I personally think the concept of the tall midfielder is overrated. Yes, it would be great to have a girth of 190cm midfielders that are elite. However, I would much rather an elite midfielder rather than a tall midfielder.

Brisbane midfield goes alright and in 2022 they had one bloke over 190cm run through there (Jarrod Berry).

I'd much rather give midfield time to some of our young guys rather than Tyler Brown as I am bullish on our young crop coming through, despite their heights:

Berry - 182cm
Pedlar - 182cm
Soligo - 180cm
Schoenberg - 182cm
Taylor - 180cm
Rankine - 181cm
Rachele - 180cm

You mention Berry but he isn't what you would class as a tall midfielder. Jordan Dawson at 192cm is our guy, however.

I think I'd prefer to look at turning someone like Tom Doedee, Lachie Gollant or Luke Nankervis into a tall midfielder and go get a KPD as a backup option.

The question remains as to whether there is any KPDs of note available to be selected.

Whilst he's fantastic, Dawson is 100% not the guy and has no real business playing inside midfield.

Nankervis is definitely a good should for that tall midfielder. Looked to have something about him during last year.

Not sure why we'd take him then given we already have enough players with that issue.
He's a much taller direct swap for first round bust McFlurry?

A mate told me that Dawson played a lot of inside mid in the NEAFL and was a gun. I just want him out of defence and into a position where he can win us games. Captaincy and inside mid this year for me, wing as a fall back.

and:
Dowling 188cm
Keays 186 (still only 25)
(and AFC.com.au lists Pedlar at 184cm and Taylor 182cm)

We don't have a height problem. Getting a blue chip mid would be nice, whatever the height.

Brisbane have McCluggage running through there quite a bit at 185cm, which is a good height. They also felt the need to go and get Dunkley

IMO it’s ideal to have a decent balance of heights in your midfield, rather than have all short arses. You don’t have to have a bunch of giants, but you don't want all smaller types running around, either (Essendon have this at the moment and it isn't really working for them). We have some real talent coming through in the likes of Berry/Soligo/Schoenberg/Rankine/Rachele, but in addition to these guys, I’d say it’s ideal to try and get two 185cm+ types in the mix - just so we're not consistently outsized

Here's his 2019 Swans NEAFL Bio after his breakout year in 2019.

McCluggage's size has little to do with his effectiveness, his is skills and a footy I.Q. off the charts. More outside than inside.

That's fair enough, helps to have a bit more height/size when you're attending CBAs and are not necessarily a contested beast, though

No one would go for size at the expense of quality.

What were looking for is a quality big powerful midfielder, who can stand up in tackles and distribute cleanly to the outside runner. Someone who can run over the top of the opposition small midfielder and cause match up problems. Someone who could also match up on the opposition big midfielder.

We're not saying we need all the midfielders to be big, but as someone else alluded to, it creates variation in our midfield rotation and makes matching up on us more difficult.

This person needs to actually be able to football though. There's no point going after someone just because they are big, but can't play. I'd rather stick with the current crop and invest in them.

I'll take breakaway speed and agility over height in a midfielder everyday and twice on Sunday's, even better if they have that and height.

I have hopes for all of Schoenberg, Pedlar and Rachele eventually running through the midfield, all have really good burst speed off the mark. Rankine enuff said.

Hately is pedestrian in every way when it comes to speed and agility.

The one thing you can say about Tyler Brown is he's a very good user of the footy and composure/decision making is pretty good but can he become at least an average midfield accumulator that is the big question.

I don't need Hately to be express if he could play like Taylor Walker in the contest. Someone who stands up and always picks the right options and gets the ball to the right person.

I think that's one of the biggest issues with our midfield. We just can't get the ball to the right player. Players are prone to blazing away and trying to be heroes or handballing to the guy right beside them, which just transfers the pressure to him and to no advantage.

Get the ball and give it to the break away guy who's running at speed.

Agree that speed and agility are vital components to have. That said, a quality midfield rotation is often well-balanced in regards to various footballing traits (speed, agility, strength and contested ball, clearance winning, size etc) - all of the best midfields of the past few years have had a good balance of these traits

In today's game, you need to be able to match up and easily compete with any midfield you're faced with, if your target is to win games

Pedlar definitely has the traits to be a Dangerfield like power mid I think. Needs time to develop that body size for the AFL, but saw him a few times in the SANFL be able to power out of contested packs.

Also important is to get his accumulation and aerobic capacity up to a high enough standard

Even getting to about 22-23 touches a game would be a great, considering how valuable each possession would be. It’s definitely still an ‘if’ rather than a ‘when’ he gets to that point, though

Have been mulling over this Brown decision and can’t get the logic thinking behind it, he’s not going to push past any of our current crop, I just can’t finf a logical reason why
SANFL flag.

It's called a rebuild.

List balance is not even in the top 10 of our concerns right now ... and IT IS hilarious how quick some on here are to move to the next whine.

Finding a key position defender cannot be something you are worried about. Surely. We are bottom half team full of youth and some good top end. The middle spots will mostly come from our existing list + some trades.

We will be found out by the better teams with structures that we cannot match.

Not a major issue in our current reality.

Adding someone like Brown to the last spot in our current playing list for 2023 should not give anyone headaches.
So it’s a rebuild and yet we are adding a mid that’s been delisted at another club. Your point makes no sense in that context.

A rebuild means you build the list. We’ve chosen not to build our key position defenders. Hard to see how you can not understand the flaw in what we are doing.
