Watching the SANFL yesterday (or the half I could stomach to watch before i turned it off), and it's a real concern at how poorly Berry is going. His season has been very ordinary. In fact I'd say Hately is a much better player - and Hately is absolutely being delisted. Hately will probably return to Centrals and win a Magarey.

I know we had a LOT out with injuries, but I didn't see a single guy playing yesterday that I was excited about for the future. Not one.

With that attitude no player will come here. We need to set our sights on players like McCluggage and convince them with a deal they can't turn down
Yep..leave no stone unturned on that..mcluggage, tom green, finn callaghan,....sound them all out with big big offers to try and turn their heads to see if we can shake 1 loose then use whatever draft capital to get a deal done

I don’t fully share your concern but I understand your point

For me it would have been nice for players like Zac Taylor and Nankevis to have played yesterday, and Cook is the one that has elite talent and needs to pull his finger out of his digit and get going, or he will waste his opportunity

We have already blooded Rachele, Sig, Worrell, Murray, Butts Pedlar and RT who should only get better with another pre-season and we have added a young talent like Izak.

Every club needs depth and role players to get you through a season, players like Parnell, Hamil, Shol, Berry, Berg, Hately, Briwn and Ned have all shown that they may not be AFL stars but they can service a role for the team. There needs to be a balance of how many of these players we keep.

In terms of pre-season watch on the current list, Dowling, Cook and Taylor are the 3 players I’m hoping for growth, and maybe Bond.

I would be offering a huge deal and the required picks to get Hugh McCluggage. Sacrifice our pick in this shitty draft and next year's with the Welsh F/S and get him in a year before he hits free agency

I don’t really understand this strategy. If he’s prepared to come to us why don’t we wait to get him for nothing but cap next year. Use those resources to get something we can’t get for nothing. I understand eliminating risk he re-signs next year, but to keep those picks I reckon you roll the dice on that.

Why would we though, our midfield was already stacked before Crouch returned. Hell, even Ben Keays has been shunted to half forward.

Why?...we need quality now while we have tex for another year hopefully similar to this. Try and win a flag next year..why wait

I guess on the watch yesterday Cook was disappointing. Berry was disappointing and not having Taylor and Nankervis was also a shame. I've been big on Dowling, but he looked pretty exhausted yesterday.

I didn't find one person that I thought had taken a step up or looked promising for the future (like Nankervis and Taylor last finals series).

The SANFL team has a whole lot of 'meh depth.

That’s what you largely get with picks in and beyond the second round.

We’re not contending next year, come 2025 we’ll regret costing ourselves a potential 250 gamer on the delusion 2024 could be a flag year.
I’m sorry but I really don’t understand this attitude. We absolutely should be trying to win a flag next year, and we have the team to do it. In fact, if we had won a couple of the 6 or 7 games this year that we managed to lose through bad kicking or umpire errors, we would be right in contention this year.

Three months ago no one would have given Carlton or GWS a snowflakes chance in hell of competing for a flag this year and both now have a genuine chance.

We currently have an AA key forward who has 1 maybe 2 years left, and we have 4 or 5 youngsters (think Soligo, Michalaney, Tillthorpe, Pedlar, Rachelle, Worrell), who could All potentially go to A grade level next year. We should absolutely be putting everything on the table to maximize that opportunity now.

Agreed. There didn't look to be any 150+ quality players in yesterday's game. Hopefully Dowling will be one.

Paying big for a player we could get free is stupidity in isolation. Doing it because you reckon it’s the difference between a flag and not in 2024 is monumental stupidity. No amount of meaningless drivel or false comparisons can change that.

I’m not sure what player you are refering to but I was just commenting on your post stating that we are not contending next year. It’s massively glass is half empty and is not supported by any facts from this year. We clearly showed that we were incredibly close or better than all 4 of the top 4 teams, and we had arguably the most dynamic forward line of the comp.

I would add that nothing in AFL list management (or any business for that matter) can be seen in “isolation” as you put it. Everything depends on the other 500 moving parts. In our case maximizing Tex, Laird and Smiths last few years plays a huge part in any decisions on using future assets now. What you believe the growth level of your juniors is going to be next year versus 2 or 3 years is also a huge consideration.

All deals can be turned down. That's why they call them deals and not enslavements.

The club has at least once offered the biggest money deal to a player (Cameron) and still got turned down. If you are already offering the biggest money, best conditions, in a team likely to play in finals and grand finals and you get turned down what's the plan then??

You do it all again with a different player
