Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Probably the thing that is more disappointing than anything is losing pick 6 in that draft. It would have got us one of the Kings. (More than likely Max).
Max went to the saints at pick 4.
If we’d somehow found a way to draft the two of them though that would have locked them into WA for life playing on the same team

The King boys are mates with Andy as he was their captain in junior footy

We might want to get in the 1st round.

Hypothetically, if a player was leaving Fremantle as a free agent and another player was also leaving Fremantle under contract to that same club then Freo could pay part of the salary of that leaving player to have that added to the Free Agent's salary to boost the AFL compensation pick.

This has yet to be tested, but it will eventually..

If we were going to lose Cox or Darcy as a FA, this season would have been better as it could have got us a first round pick that would be top 5 given how shit we look right now.
But they aren’t free agents till next season

why are people even bring up Darcy and cox… both contracted both love freo… both better then any draft pick they get for them…

If we keep losing games then picks will be the least of our concern.
Some of our Top quality youngsters will start looking at other clubs and their agents longingly. We know how that ends 😔

We need a forward who can take a mark and fill in for 20% of the game in the ruck when Darcy is resting forward and Jackson is playing rover. Ideally that would be Josh Treacy. The sneaky move would be to have Jackson quietly nominate for the ruck while Treacy is around and see if the opposition ruck is paying attention enough to get a technical free kick against.

Only bringing up Darcy as Jackson isn’t really a FWD.
He will never be KPF. He just needs to take a few more clunks. He is also only 21. Lobb pretty much got drafted at that age. Give him time.

We to knuckle down and make minimal trade outs and certainly not Cox or Darcy). Henry is one (I actually hope he comes on) that could be traded out. I’d be looking at three-way player swap. Whether that is Sharpe or another Winger type. Perhaps a free-agent. Himmelberg of the GWS variety would be a target for me. Genuine swingman who floats around nicely as a tall forward. I also think Georgiades is gettable and out of contract. Pickett for mine is more likely to go to Port. If he does it could shake out Georgiades. Naughton is pipe dream regardless of what Ryan Daniels said. We go down that route we would be trading out the farm for second year running and I’d give up on the club. Would kill us for years.

Our depth has been hammered after 2022 Trade period. If we can add a player or two and keep some second third round picks as well as 2024 1st then I think we can hit 2024 in better shape.

I also hope we finish just outside the eight but need to get a wriggle on starting this Fri.

Cox is going nowhere per basically the man himself in private.

The list is in nowhere near as bad a shape as some are making out. It's a quality young list that needs a couple of good forwards and needs Ras and MJ to come on. Also needs Noddy to be fit.

We can build depth cheaply but the core is there minus a partner for Amiss and ideally, a genuine goal kicking small ala Pickett. Try not to overreact to 1 month of poor footy compared to the last few years

What are your thoughts on the gameplan? Did we spend too much of the off season playing scratchies and not enough fine tuning the game plan which McRae destroyed.

Me
It's irrelevant whether they would come to Freo. The relevancy is in the examples of trades where a club has not overpaid to land a big fish. Something Freo seems incapable of, which would lend itself to us not trying to bring in a saviour from trading. It hasn't worked in our entire history, yet we keep repeating the same mistakes.

The media coverage on the Jackson trade was heavily biased by Victorians (as always) and should have been ignored by the club. Anyone who shut out the hysteria and looked at historical trades could see we clearly paid too much for him at the time, even predicting a good 2023.
Melbourne teams have 10 clubs in Victoria. They have a leverage we don't have. Even WC got fleeced with Kelly. As do GC and Gws.
Jackson was a number 2 draft pick and projecting that way on field. The believe that what was expected to be two first round mid teen picks was too low is reasonable.
We obviously made an exception because, long-term, he was too good to refuse (long-term success). Time will tell. I think many of us believe the timing was wrong for us, but it is what it is. Let's see what the big picture is. We weren't winning a premiership this year anyway. The personnel loses over the past few years have been too fast for us to keep up.

Not the right thread for it, I'm just talking about those who think this list is miles off it, it's not. The list is currently underperforming due to a combination of things, including gameplan

Fremantle is getting bottled up trying to move the ball because our roaming talls aren't taking marks. It's the entire problem. We were poor at the contest in the first couple of weeks, that's better. We are still poor with our delivery inside fifty but a lot of that is due to the slower ball movement required because we need to chip it around so much due to previously aforementioned talls not taking the marks on the longer kicks, when the ball is finally going inside fifty it's throwing a free t-shirt into a crowd of hands up to catch it, they've all flooded back.

Talls like Darcy and Jackson take marks and the ball movement will look way faster, faster ball movement will make the forwards look like they have tonnes of space. Amiss and Frederick will light it up. It's the reason opposition clubs are targeting this part of our ball movement plan.

If that clicks, they are screwed. Absolutely screwed. Amiss, Switta or Frederick on the lead or back towards goal and it's over for the defender. Fremantle's major assets are the speed of those three forwards and ruck dominance. You counter that with hard contested ball and then covering the space to force a long kick down the line where you're blocking those marks.

It slows us down because it has to or we will win all the football games.

Oh nothing wrong with it I agree. I have seen FWD lines like ours win premierships. Trying to fit Jackson as a Fwd is tough, as he isn’t that experienced there.

Coaching/Gameplan is holding the list back.

Proposal.

Play all the forwards high. Start Frederick in the circle as the deepest forward. The opposition will have to let us outnumber them in our defensive half with both Freddy and Switta ready to run onto the loose kick over the top. We kick it around until Wilson can launch a torpedo over the back and the race is on.

70m sprint effort from our forward and goal.

Repeat.

It will be ugly contested, crowded footy. 45-26 scorelines.

I mean, I wouldnt go as far to say a forwardline like ours is winning a flag - it's not any time soon haha, it really needs some more quality up there but if you add a Naughton and/or a Pickett then it can

I do feel we need to use the corridor more and back ourselves in to make those kicks.

We have the ball users.

I disagree our ball movement is too slow for any fwd.

Do like what Taylor is proposing. More of a Pagans Paddock. Freddy’s Paddock.

I think improved gameplan and movement gets us to 4th - 5th like last year. There is a fundamental gap in forward talent that would stop us going further unless Amiss becomes the best KPF in the game in the next few years.

Reckon Amiss is going to be pretty bloody good!

I just feel like a mobile medium tall fwd line is the way to go. That’s why I totally don’t understand what the bulldogs are doing with the land of the giants.

I reckon some of the best games I've seen from Treacy, in the WAFL, have been as a part time ruck.

I'd have no problem putting him on the ball for 20% game time in the AFL.
