Interested in your choices for the vacant list spot.
I mean I'm not comprehensively ruling out Markov or Frederick, just that that I feel there's young talent on the table that we can consider given our list profile.

There is no one out there right now that we need to urgently sign in order to fill a gap in the 22.
Interested to know; have you left out Pitto due to injury or you’d rather the 1 ruckman with JSOS chopout?
The latter, but it could just as easily be Pittonet over TDK as it's a question of comparing their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their form.

But to this point, Pittonet has not been declared fit to play a practice match, and even if he's on schedule it's going to be cutting it fine.
With our current injury list it is ridiculous to suggest Newman and Kennedy shouldn’t be in the first 21 players considered for round 1.

Fair enough if you don’t have them in your best 22 at full strength, it’s a tight bunch, but for now your bias is leaking.
How about 25 or 30? Sure, but that's not what I went with in my 22/23, and I'm not foolish for thinking so.

I've even got Kennedy in the shortlist. Stop.

With Saad and Markov on the flanks hold on to your hat.

A few years ago, Markov recorded the highest top speed in the AFL for the year. 37.6km an hour or something. Hopefully some mentoring from Saad could help him better understand when to go, when to keep going and when to stop or take the more conservative option. This is something Saad has improved at immeasurably over the years.

And for the record, my opinions on Kennedy, Newman or anyone else are not 'biased' any more than anyone elses. I have no personal* vendetta against or distinct favouritism for anyone on the list, at the club, or in terms of their athletic profile or background.

I would argue that Jack is slower off the mark than perhaps both of them, and yet I'm putting his name on the board every week he's fit. Why? Decision making, skill execution, timing, endurance base, and understanding his short comings so that he gets to the moments where he can make the most difference.

If I could play 4 Jack Silvagnis in the team, I would.

I'll just put this out there without referring to anyone. Matthew Kennedy played in 17 games last year - actually really 16 and a bit because he got hurt in the Adelaide game. He played in 12 wins (that's right every win that we had) the five games that he missed we lost. Coincidence? I think not.

Do you think that Michael Voss has much time for a really tough on baller who might be a bit slow but is fast thinking and will plant himself in the way of danger without fear of consequence? I think that he might even see a bit of himself in Kennedy.

Personally can't see him missing a game that he is available for

Any youngster appeal to you more than another.

Yeap, until someone pushes out the likes of Kennedy, Newman, Jsos, etc, based on output rather than potential, then they are locks

Guys like Honey, Cuners, Dow, need to step up and or show consistency at the lower levels to be considered

What's the go with Fogarty? Still seems to be running laps. Will he be ready for the start of the season? Don't recall any update from the club on him ever.

You'd think we would get clarity on whether marchbank and Cunningham are still injured or just being managed in the next few weeks. If they are fit they will need to be involved in main training and match play. If they still aren't over the next month it means they are injured and in massive doubt for round 1.

Not in our best 28.

No, but we didn't have a need for Boyd, Hayes or Sam Durdin in our best 22 last year ... until we did.

Not sure why all the hysterics about Zac.Granted he’s important but it’s not a KPP.I’m sure we can fill that void.

If we’re contending this year we need 30 players to get us there.

Not really hysterics. He was looking the goods in preseason training and he fits into our system really well with his run and carry from the back half. Also the concern is just preseason injuries in general. Our history is awful.

Just as a side note, it looks like the AFL have FINALLY changed the rules and scrapping impediments regarding the trading of 1st round picks - no longer the requirement of using at least two over a rolling 4 year period.

We're one of the clubs that could benefit from the rule change, as we weren't able to trade this year's 1st round under the previous rule. Doesn't mean a lot at the moment, but may assist us in potential trade negotiations at the end of the year with a McKay or Himmelberg if their clubs match our offer.

Although I appreciate the optimism and consider it well founded I'm not sure where you'd find the cap space to bring in another marquee signing.

At this point we're surely looking to fill out the edges of a premiership calibre best 22 and the depth to support it

While Markov is a limited player (aside from his speed) and could become the next whipping boy if he regularly coughs it up, I feel it’s the right move to bring him in as a replacement for Zac.

(I’m sure you were all breathlessly waiting for my opinion on this).

I can't speak for everyone, but I've been on the edge of my seat worried about who replaces Plow, Dow & LOB for our future whipping boy position.

Rate Markov, running HBF...not a lot unlike Saad.....loves to run the ball and have a bounce, good runner
was surprised Suns moved him on..had injuries hammy/knee much of 2022...
This could end up being a great move for Carlton !! if he can get some games with no injuries !!!

I was a bit jilted when I first heard the news this morning.

However, I'm coming around on Markov as another VFL player but still believe he's had the same message drilled into him at two clubs now and remains happy to be that pacy back who runs himself into trouble as much as he helps his team and hasn't got clean enough disposal.

Some have suggested it's unwillingness to take on the message. Perhaps the skill level just isn't there which means no matter how many times he takes on the message it won't work.

Still, if he's a stop gap 5-10 gamer and he's not expected to take Zac's spot in the 22 we could do worse.

Heaven knows Saad cops enough hits through the year that inevitably be may miss a game or two and while he's several classes above Markov we don't have another player we can really slot into that spot as a backup. We've constantly said that the strength of teams like Sydney is that they have someone who can fill in for an injury. On that basis Markov makes sense.
