Himmelberg is one I think we could land and would fit incredibly well at HB. Depends on how Gov and Marchy hold up this year I guess.

Basically a mature version of someone like Lemmey, plays anywhere down the spine and I very good chopout ruck

We will free up some cash end of year and GWS still have guys on massive money

Might be jumping the gun on this, but here goes ...

I've really enjoyed our recruitment of Hewett and Acres. I think it's a smart strategy to target workmanlike players that are undervalued at strong clubs. We seem to bring them in for fairly modest contracts and give up very little in draft compensation. Still reckon we need a couple more of these types to round out our best 22. Maybe a small forward, ruck, or winger.

Who are the restricted or unrestricted free agents we could target at the end of this season?
A couple we’ve looked at before
Jade gresham
Toby McLean

Or
Bailey Williams
Daniel Lloyd
Alex Neal bullen

Ones I like for different reasons

Dylan Moore, Himmelberg, Daniel McKenzie, Redman
Personally, would add Jack Graham and Mark O'Connor to ones I like from a 'gettable list'. Each with flexibility to push to a Wing/HFF/HBF. Out of the 4 you mentioned Himmelberg and Redman would be great additions.

Think we're past adding any more 'star players' but we will have a fair chunk of cap space free after this season with the players OOC this off season. 2024 I imagine we'll be making a real play for Elijah Hollands. Offensively an absolute weapon and a different type to what we have, would fit our 22 perfectly imo.

Other OOC players I'd consider are Ash and Pickett, but both would cost plenty in trade currency and salary. Don't think we need to reach for those types anymore but if they expressed interest in joining, they are too talented not to have a look.

Dylan Moore is a player I really like. Would have been great if we could have gone for him in this offseason just gone, but now he would be a bit redundant on our list, given who we've acquired.

I think we need to be absolutely ruthless with our injury prone players at the end of this season. We can't keep going to a dry well.
Marchbank, Cuningham, McGovern, Martin, Williams. All can't stay on the park. If they fail again this season, and Williams has, then I can see most going. No point hanging onto them. Add Honey and Philp.
I hope they all do well, but....

Walsh and Cottrell are the only ones on the injury list without an extensive prior injury history. You could probably point the finger more at SOS on that rather than A.R.

Would bet my bottom dollar that whichever of Marchbank and Mcgovern have the best year stays on the list and the other one goes.

Cuningham's career is over if he goes in for surgery imo

Martin will stay as he's not an integral player and we have no reliance on him being healthy to be a good team. He's a cream on top player who most clubs would be happy to just be fit come finals if thats all his body had in it. Also has no value on the market so wouldn't be much chance of getting a big contract elsewhere.
.
Williams imo we should look at moving on to free up salary, even if its for absolutely peanuts. Surplus in his position and can't stay on the park. Easy to replace.

Philip gone.

Honey depends on form this year.

Dow the same as Honey.

Ed will retire.

Everyone else pretty safe imo, TDK a chance of leaving but he won't be pushed out the door thats for sure.

I'd be completely fine with moving on 5-6 of that group. Would free up loads of cap space for us in an off season in which some really quality role players will be on the market. Himmelberg, Graham, Redman, Mckenzie, Ash, Pickett.

If we could secure just a couple of those players and hit the draft to replace that group our list would be better off.

Williams has a long contract, wont be going anywhere.

Kemp, Marchbank, Cuningham, Pittonet, fogarty, plowman, mcgovern, newman, dow all in the gun, fairly or not.

What's Newman done to deserve being under the pump to retain his spot for next season? Has given us very good service since coming over from the Swans, sometimes he makes the odd clanger or two on field, but provides a lot of needed leadership out there ...

This just isn't practical.
Unless you want to dish off a first rounder with him, nobody is going to eat enough of his salary for it to be worth it for us.

Would look pretty unpleasant for us as a footy club to try give Williams the flick after he did his ACL.(especially if we want to recruit other players from other clubs)

I know he is on probably too much coin, but we got to do the right thing by Zac ...

Up until Gold Coast got on the bongs last off season and chucked in pick 7 in a salary dump there had been plenty of salary dumps which were very straight forward discounted price trades.
A few clubs including us picked up some of GWS bad contracts given to decent players and they simply traded them for 4th round picks etc. Scully, Patton etc

Clubs could do a lot worse than a player like Williams and if they have cap space galore - Essendon, North, Hawks etc they likely wouldn't be expecting anything close to the Bowes trade in return given he'd actually be a good pick up for them as a senior player and good decision maker. We're in a different position in that we need these players on the park as we're trying to push towards a premiership.

Him sitting around in the rehab room every year on 800k is significantly different to us than it would be for those clubs where he'd likely be a net positive overall.

If a deal can be struck that benefits both clubs involved I wouldn't give it a second thought to pull the trigger on Williams. Certainly not going to be complaining if he comes back and plays with us next year, just think his money would be better spent elsewhere.

Don't worry. A decent sweep this year is coming

The clean out it should really have at least started at the end of last season but the club deferred the hard decisions and now it looks like we are going to pay the price for it in 2023.

Whilst none of these guys are singularly critical to the teams success its almost impossible to have success when 15-20% of the list are routinely unavailable for at least half the season.

I don't think Pitto is on that list.
Philp obviously is

In the last 3 seasons Pitto has played 33 out of 61 possible games.

Patton and Scully were 26 and 27 at the times of their trades, and the Giants were under extreme salary cap pressure. Patton only had 1 year left on his contract. Scully had 3, but was only on 500k. And both were able to renegotiate new deals.

Williams will be 29 by the next trade period, and he signed a FA contract, so the money is fixed. It's a very different scenario.

What's left on the Williams contract?
