So we want him inside, outside, creating burst, kicking goals & laying chase down tackles. Think we need to give him a cape to pull that off. His tackle numbers have been excellent for a while now, he can’t do everything at once- why do we expect him to do things that no one else does? His accountability has been excellent, putting on a lot more bumps & blocks to free up team mates & laying tackles/making second efforts that count.
Might as well complain that he doesn’t perform well enough as a lead up forward or work hard enough to spoil against an opposition forward. Worst of all I don’t think he’s had a hit out in his career

Mate are you serious. Pressure, chasing, tackling. One of the major fundamentals of the game and a non-negotiable for any sucessful side of the past or future. Dow simply does not do it with any intensity at all. And if you think no one else in the team is doing it I seriously question which side you have been watching TBH.

A new half forward line please and thank you. Rachelle has enough talent in his left nut to put Fisher, JSos, Honey and Ed out of a job.

Said it at the start of the year and will say it again, we may have Charlie and Harry up there but we have the worst surrounding cast in the competition. Motlop and Durdin will be good long term but the rest of them are absolutely rubbish.

Good kicks of the footy with speed is the number 1 priority, apart from saad, McGovern and Charlie we don’t have elite kicks in our side. Most importantly we don’t have 1 midfielder who is an elite kick .
Cripps, Hewitt, Walsh, Cerra, Ed, Acres, Kennedy and Fisher all are average kicks and all 1 paced we need some sort of change up in the middle someone that offers something different.

Blind Freddy could see we have a slow list at the start of the season but the problem I see is that it is hard to address with Kennedy, Hewitt, Cerra and Cripps in the same side. Acres and Holland have fixed our wings but aren’t real quick. Durdin is our only forward (Honey miles off the level atm) who has the speed/agility to close down space and break away from congestion.
TDK isn’t good enough to ruck alone and JSOS isn’t good enough to chop out.
I think JSOS is in trouble and will be replaced by Cottrell when he is ready with Kennedy and TDK playing JSOS’s role

Id like us to offload/trade the following players asap….

had plenty of time/chances but simply not good enough:

id persevere with Dow but need to apply a focussed development plan for him. If he doesn’t change let him go too.

im not sure they have much trade value.

The supporters who basically only watch our games and take little notice of opposition are going to see first hand our EPIC recruitment fail.

The story of Anthony Caminiti is both spectacular and damning of our list management practices. Pre season Caminiti was VFL listed with us after having an injury punctuated draft year. The kid has a fantastic story.

For anyone not au fait, he was invited to try out at St. Kilda after Jack Silvagni blurted to SOS that this kid had given Weitering a hard time in match sim, perhaps even “gave him a touch up”. When that talent is within your reach, you don’t let it go. Caminiti tried out at Saints, first match sim, multiple marks and goals. He was signed up. We had a list spot as this was being played out.

I love that we rewarded Cincotta when a vacancy occurred. But when a big man of the calibre of Caminiti falls in your lap and you can grab for nothing, you don’t let them go. It is easy to say we invested in Lemmey at the draft and there was not a need, but we have room for another tall. Caminiti is tall, robust, quick and combative has played at both ends and in the ruck in his junior footy.

People are banging on here of the threat of Membrey returning. He will be lucky to get a game. This 19yo kid is the spearhead and that will not change until Max King is fit, and I will be surprised if he is replaced even then. He is that good. He is not a “star” yet, but is shaping like he will be.

Is the one that got away and whoever made the decision not to sign him up whether it be recruiter, coach or administrator, they are going to be “reminded” for over a decade.

It is easy to argue we have Harry and Charlie, but he is game ready NOW and could easily play third tall/ resting ruck in our set up. He is a self starter of the highest order. We could make room. Just like we could make room for Lemmey when he comes on. For the record posters suggesting Lemmey is anywhere near ready are kidding themselves, he is a long term project currently giving a few decent signs. If both made the grade, at worst we would have a player who could bring massive bounty at the trade table.

those that accused Jack of getting rid of a rival to his role were spot on, whether jack is Machiavellian enough to do it intentionally or not (steve 100% would be)

I need Dow, Kemp and Carroll (if Carroll is back for the VFL of course) to play out of their skin and put pressure on those who struggled last night. I want one of these guys to bang the door down. I am not convinced Hewett or Cripps are playing fit. Besides that, none of our starting 6 midfielders (Cripps, Walsh, Hewett, Kennedy, Cerra, Curnow) yesterday have pace, if they don't have pace and they are losing the clearance then we need to introduce a point of difference in an effort to kill two birds with one stone.

We can't gift Dow a game because he was a top 3 pick or whatever he was, but he is the one who can break lines. He needs to have an absolutely amazing VFL performance though. He has a lot of very, very good games at that level but not many that challenge the MC to give him a crack. If he can split the game open tonight I think he plays next week with Hewett likely to make way while he gets back to peak fitness.

While Dow's explosiveness out of stoppages is good, its the defensive ability to chase and pressure opponents that lacks from our midfield. Dow unfortunately has never shown much proficiency for that, he looks like two entirely different athletes in attack versus defence.

Walsh is really the only player I'd back to be able to chase an opponent down if they got into space out of any of our mids.

Just on our speed. Cottrell, Doc, Gov, Boyd and Williams are arguably all best 22 and offer pace/run.
Our better players aren’t injured but the players that are injured all have similar qualities that we lack.
This is a great point. We have enough “run” on the list. It is also as much about positioning. We must have people running to the right areas. Plenty of teams are drilled to present to areas as soon as possession is attained or in defence. Our reactions are sporadic and fragmented. We are ten or twenty years behind the times structurally.

Wish we grabbed Caminiti pre season, would be set for talls and we could focus on adding to our midfield with a quick and agile ball player.

With Cripps, Hewett and to a lesser degree Kennedy offering limited mobility through the midfield and the more mobile Walsh, Cerra and Hollands not being express pace we have a recruitment need, as well as some structural adjustments to make.

plow Is a good depth player. Plays in vfl and comes into seniors to cover injured players. he has limitations but at least effort is there and goes in when needed.

if Our seniors played with a good system we could easily carry plow when he plays.

Nup , time to delist and put some fresh players in . The bloke stinks as a senior player. He has gotta be close to 30 years old as well.
This is half the problem with Carlton - holding onto bit players for too long. They have to grow a pair and cut loose

ibe never been a fan of plow. Im just thinking about cap space and having a balancEd seniors/vfl sides. If we can delist and find better around same cost go for it. But atm we’ve got too many others to think about As a priority.

I think we're at a point now where our depth needs to be developing kids, not extremely limited 28-32yos like Plowman and Ed.

Newman, Young, Doc
McGovern, Weiters, Saad
Acres, Cripps, Hollands
TDK, Cerra, Walsh
Fisher, Curnow, Motlop
Durdin, Mackay, JSOS
I/C: Boyd, Williams, Hewett, Kennedy
Sub: Cottrell

There's a "best 22" if everyone is fit. Can maybe make arguments for shuffling some deck chairs:
- Fisher vs Owies
- JSOS vs Pitto

There is enough experience on each line there that we should be covering injuries with developing young(er) players.

Back - Cincotta, Cowan, Kemp
Midfield - Dow, Carroll
Wing - LOB, Carroll, Binns
Forward - Lemmey, Dow, Carroll, Binns

Some overlap cause I see a few being able to play different roles. But the point is that while Plowman was handy depth and fodder for a few years, the list has gone past that point. Injuries should provide opportunities to have kids step up, not excuses to go back to blokes who are slow by foot, slow to kick and slow to think their way through the play.

yep, limited but dependable and pretty durable. keep as long as he know he's only injury cover now and concentrate on improving best 22, not the bottom half of the list.

Let's see, how about

We start with adding some speed, then a bit more speed, then, finish with adding some speed
call out to arrow who saw adelaide coming from a long way out.........

This has been the problem for a while. Gov and Marchy both injured and can’t play the third defender role. MC don’t trust Kemp yet so Plowman is the only option.

Same goes for high half forward. Cunners and Martin both always injured, Fog probably not good enough (or also injured) so Fisher is the only option.

Technically we have catered for those spots on the list. The players are just never available. That is the true cost of carrying injury prone types.

This is why the loss last night is so depressing. We don’t have options ready to come in. There’s no competition for spots coz the competition is injured.

Sadly tough decisions were avoided last year and unfortunately we are starting to see the price which will linger on all year and possibly derail the 2023 season.

Best we hope for this season Kemp moving ahead Plowman as 3rd defender and maybe improvise with Cotts or Fog as a pressure forward instead of Fisher.

So your plan is to make us quicker in one position but less capable in 3?

I'm getting tired of everyone talking up Cottrell when he's not played for a month... he's got so many shortcomings as a midfielder and a defensive forward, and he can't play anything else.
