I‘d keep Dow & Philp another season , assess astutely before we discard more high draft picks.
Setterfield, Stocker and Phillips to a lesser extent, are trades or deletions gone wrong.
They could have been solid depth players, in the very least.
Setterfield wanted to go, he was paid relatively well, 6th choice as an inside mid and his next contract was going to reflect his status - can't blame him for going to his boyhood club, on a good contract and being a starting midfielder

Forward mid is a need.

Fisher not tackling, you need a replacement.

Need to add 2 quick players for the onball group. Either find a mid who can do that or a running defender so Docherty can go on ball permanently.

Big tick fixing the wings.

That's the way of the AFL now.

We got Acres, a clear best 18 player in a team that won a final for a future 3rd round pick.

Without checking age, Acres isn’t exactly young but I agree with you, fringe players are relatively cheap, the way things are going I think we will have a huge exodus and will get close to nothing coming back.

Dow not being picked means he will go via DFA, Kemp who I think will leave will have zero value because he can’t get any games, then there’s the injured players.

I obviously don’t know what’s being said in house, but I think Dow would have/should have been given a few games, even as the sub.

You should re-watch the game. Binns had plenty of attention, he just ran bloody hard to make an option

That isn't slur on Dow, as not many have the tank of Binns

As an option for this season, what roles could Binns fill? Could he replace Fisher or would he be more suited to a wing?

The strong marking half forward seems the most important role to fill end of season, given our forward entry struggles. The Greene/Degoey type that we'd hoped Martin/Honey would become but now looks unlikely. Kennedy is the best clunk of the footy but can get exposed the other way and Fisher can't mark. JSOS isn't doing enough either. You can see why we wanted to move up for Sheezel, though Hollands has done very well in alleviating another weakness. The pacey mid with elite kicking would be next after that in the mould of Whitfield/N Daicos.

I actually think Dow could end up a good player and we've seen plenty of glimpses to suggest he can impact at the level. I just don't believe it's possible to play him and Cripps together. Right now and most likely for the rest of his career, Cripps will be better than Dowy in most aspects of the game and unfortunately, while covering 1 inside mid who can't run defensively is quite simple... covering 2 is a whole different challenge.

Dow is in a weird place career wise, he could possibly stick it out at Carlton making 200k a year playing VFL until his time comes or try somewhere else where he's just as likely to be in the same position as he is with us.

I'd actually be quite happy with a set up like Dow, Cerra, Walsh, Kennedy in a few years' time. I just don't know if he would be willing to back himself in long term, nor do I think the club would. 0 trade currency, interest would be at an all time low... It's quite an interesting situation.

Was just thinking, due to Docs injury timing, Dow & Doc have played very little football together of late. Kennedy also wasn’t performing when Dow got his last block of games.
We literally have not seen what, Crippa, Dow, Kennedy/Cerra/Hewitt (at the coal face & not all 3 at once) supported by Walsh/Acres/Doc (off the back & wings) can do.
Given rotations & Kennedy spending some more time forward there’s a balance to be found.
We just need to get creative with the magnets & give it a crack for a 3 games.
Yes Doc is now injured again but Cincotta can provide a similar drive if given a chance.
Speed kills, we just have to be brave enough to give it a chance

Think I recall reading that it was more that Dow himself turned down any prospect of a trade. Apparently wanted to stick it out with Carlton and try and earn his spot.
This, he absolutely loves it at Carlton and would not even consider a move.

This is what his family has told people.

Said it on the weekend - rest Cripps or push him forward into the Silvagni role for 50% of his game time, play Dow as the main contested mid for an extended run. Have Kennedy and Cripps essentially split their duties - when one is in the middle, the other is forward, rotate as needed.

There is a very real possibility, as crazy as it may sound, that our midfield (as in, the midfield options we have available to us in 2023) operates better with Dow in place of Cripps for significant portions of the game. It might be better again if we could keep Cripps but replace Hewett (for example) with an agile or quick outside player with class disposal (ie. Josh Daicos, Liam Baker, Lachie Ash, Errol Gulden, Chad Warner etc.) - but we can't do that til the end of the season.

Crippa's quick hands appear to have abandoned him of late. He gets the ball, he gets wrapped up and taken to ground. Reset the stoppage and it seems to be a matter of time before the opposition win the ball, or we hack a rushed kick forward and straight to a contest or opposition interceptor.

Mix it up. Dow + Cerra/Walsh + Kennedy/Cripps at the centre bounce. Walsh and Cerra can play HF and HB respectively when they're not on-ball, both can also play a bit of wing. One of Kennedy/Cripps in the goalsquare so Curnow and Mackay can both lead to different parts of the forward 50. When Dow is resting (bench or forward) I'd still only have one of Cripps/Kennedy in the middle, but partnered up with both Cerra and Walsh, or hell, even Acres for the odd rotation. Send Fish back to the VFL and have him play Dow's role on-ball for a bit. Maybe being around the action will help him get back into the groove of bodylining the ball and sticking his tackles.

Even if Dow isn't always bringing the ball straight out the front of the stoppage for a quick and direct F50 entry, even when he's not his handball game is very good and may help to feed the ball out to Walsh/Cerra in space more frequently.

Flow on effects as well:
- Cripps has been playing a very taxing game for years, spending more time forward might buy him another year or two at the top level.
- Cripps' goal-kicking has been woeful since mid last year - spending less time on ball, getting to every contest, may improve his ability to convert up forward.
- If we don't find a solution for the midfield mix this year, we need to address it in the off-season. But if Dow can be part of the solution, then we don't need to invest as much in that area and can address other needs as well (ie. half forward connection, durable intercept defender).

Makes you wonder if he's getting some insight into how things are going at the Tigers from his brother and perhaps realises all is not greener on the other side.
That’s a very good point. Being able to trust & really understand the person you’re getting the info from makes the world of difference. Would be exceptionally valuable when considering options/thinking of your future
