Anyone who thinks our improvement should or could solely come from within is in for a shock. We need to add 2 preferably 3 best 22 players externally. It's been the lore for as long as I can remember. I don't know how we get it done but we must.

I don't think I would be shocked at all, still plenty of improvement in this group

While adding and or improving best 22 is the strategy of all sides, continued continuity, layers to the gameplan will still be the most important aspects going into next year IMO

We cooled on Gresham.
He had interest in us, and a figure around 500k seemed to be the going rate.
But SOS was never going to let him leave for a band 3 compo pick and we were never going to enter into a bidding war for a player like that.

Saints and Bombers are now working together to do some very clever/edgy deals that would see the saints take Shiel and his full salary for a semi high pick, but the bombers will the pay Gresham extreme overs to ensure the saints get band 1 compo… clever… dodgy… somewhere in the middle. These are the deals the SOS and Adrian like to do.
Sos the master at work

Upgrading and improving the best 22 players is not a particularly shrewd or ingenious tactic but an essential element and evolution for any successful team, it must continue every season‘s end.
I was dumbfounded that we were so inert , not participating last year‘s trade period it hurt us. Let’s hope the agenda is clearly set this year, we need to clear space, at least 6 to 8 players need to be moved on and fresh skillful, quick players with decent kicking skills and footy IQ acquired.

It sounds great that growth will come from within and I’m sure lots will, but every other club has kids developing and players coming back from injury, what’s to say our players will develop better?

Brisbane added Dunkley, McKenna, Gunston and 2 first round draft picks.

Collingwood added Mckstay, Hill and Mitchell.

We don’t need to break the bank or we don’t need a star, but we need to improve our best 22. There’s plenty of low cost options to do this.

I remain encouraged by the last trade period (including draft).

We identified a need for endurance. We added Acres, we drafted Hollands and Binns, and we put additional development into Cottrell (who had a wonderful final v the Swans).

I guess you could be critical and say that we needed pace. But equally, I think we went a long way to filling the key need we did identify.

I still think the really good thing about losing 8 out of 9 games was that it highlighted to the key decision makers the deficiencies in our list. I am sure they have chewed over the messages from that lean spell, and established a plan for overcoming the shortfalls we have in certain demographics.

Good day to be Gresham if this goes ahead. He's the real winner. Extra undeserved 300 grand a year in his pocket to give St kilda a better pick.

This is why I dislike the compensation concept for losing a player. It simply shouldn’t exist. Clubs should be incentivised to retain their players, not the other way around.

It would also force clubs to trade for players and pay them market rates, not inflated salaries.

Ess and St K win by each getting “free picks” at the expense of all the remaining 16 clubs being pushed down a spot in the national draft.

Edmund saying we may be keen on Hayden Crozier. Interesting.

when was the last "package" of players that changed clubs? the herd of b/c graders that sos brought down from gws? it seems to be a rarity - like a straight swap of this player for that player, even rarer - yet people keep throwing up these improbable scenarios........
