Position 2023 Rucks

How do we fee about Tim English? He's in my side, he's probably the next premier super coach relevant ruck. But he has been injured a few too many times and his concussion issues perhaps aren't in his favour? It's a mandatory 10 days off I think? But with his history, you'd almost pencil him kn for at least 14 days if he suffers another knock? I really like what he brings though.

He and Marshall are firming as R1.

If it helps you any, English has made his way into the Hall of Never Again 'round mine.
He'll kill it when he plays, he'll kill you when he doesn't play and whether it's a head hit, a hamstring or some freak muscle injury, he'll find a way to break your SC heart.

Sort of become Nat Fyfe, isn't he?

What A Bit Dusty said the other day applies to Tim English. It's better to start him and then trade him out when/if he goes down, as that's only one trade. It's worse if you trade him in later then have to trade out again. Then he's cost you 2 trades.

I'm planning on starting him, but he's a must trade if he gets any kind of head knock, will miss a month not a week.

Every ruck has a downside this year, at least English looks to have the role and scoring power to go huge.

You know what? Sold!!! Broken heart assured and all. The thought process is just too damn attractive to disregard.

There is no place for heart's in SC, it's all head (except for Jackson Macrae ). Just don't expect to have him all year is how I'm looking at it :thumbsu:

I'm surprised by how many people have Darcy in their pre-season teams.

Surely the effect Jackson has, an Darcy's scoring history when Meek played, is concerning.

I guess the problem is all 5 rucks I had in my team at different stages last year, I have a pretty good reason not to start.

Am sure the majority of you are in the same boat.

his ceiling is huge.. who do you go instead? tried and tested witts?

edit - I wouldnt wanna touch a gold coast or geelong ruck. nicnat isnt trust worthy enough to even be fit for r1. grundy a bit of an unknown at a new club with max. roma can shit you up the wall with his scoring. hicky and cameron wont get anywhere near witts english darcy and co.

I'd go Witts over Darcy personally, although I do agree Darcy's ceiling is larger. Darcy's average when Meek plays is 97 from 9 games. Witts won't have that issue at the Suns, unless Chol spends more time in the ruck with King back.

I like Roma with Ryder gone and Hayes unlikely to be available for a while. He can be a frustrating scorer, but the main thing that was holding him back (Paddy) is no longer a problem. He averaged 109.8 when Ryder didn't play this year.

Getting Grundy only makes sense if he plays as the number one ruck IMO. Gawn has the capacity to be a dominant key forward, Grundy doesn't.

Wouldn't go anywhere near NicNat.

Yeah i am in the same boat too.
Dont want to start gawn bc of grundy.
Wont start darcy bc of jackson.
English in theory has less competition (as lobb doesnt like rucking) but he isnt that durable.
Nicnat is too old and in a declining team.
In theory witts should be good as has no competition for the no1 spot but he was very up and down in the back half of the year.
Marshall might be the best bet given his scoring history and lack of other ruck options (only him and journeyman campbell).

Until we know what role guys like jackson will get its hard to pick him.
I can see some people picking a cheap ruck setup until its clear what role guys like grundy etc have and who is scoring well.
For me i might even take blicavs for the first 6 weeks (at least hes durable and scores decently) and see who the best ruck is to upgrade to at that time.

Hodors problem was always meek.
Jackson will replace lobb for no discernible effect imo. I think Hodor is the best premo ruck this year

Lobb was basically 85 % forward 15 % ruck.
Jackson isnt a great fwd so i assume he will get much more ruck time which will eat into hodors scoring unless hodor really does damage when he is fwd and jackson is rucking.

I predict that Grundy is the CBA ruckman and will be heavily involved in midfield possession chains, spending 90% of game minutes between the arcs, while Gawn plays as a forward and also goes back to fill the hole and take intercept marks while competing for lots of the boundary throw-ins.

Grundy is a bargain IMO, he will be one of the three highest scoring rucks. I just don't think there's a way to use him to help your AFL team win that doesn't involve him scoring bulk SC points

Im not sure that will work. Grundy can cover the ground but hes not as athletic as blicavs is and gawn as a stay at home fwd i dont think will work he doesnt have the forward craft. But for what melb are paying them both they will have to try.

A lot of talk around Cameron if he's in or if he's out.

What about Cox, yes he could be in & out but fairly cheap & is good for DPP to.

Aaron Hall also a lock then :moustache::moustache:

You're the Pies fan, is it Cox in or Cox out this year? :moustache:
Pre season will tell but he may be the number one ruck.
Just like Cameron if he's named without the other you'd have to look at him.

Then wipe it like a dirty ass most likely.

I think the worry with Marshall is with King injured long term he gets parked forward and they play that spud Campbell.

Could be the play to get him in when he gets DPP and King is back.
That exact occurrence cost me the GF in DT last year! Couldn't even manage 40. Lost by 5 points!

Looking Fit & Lean ...

Bandage on the knee, but yeah he’s looking pretty fit –

I’ve got Darcy and English at the mo, but probably won’t have the guts to take 2x injury risks into the season proper.

Added Grundy to my watchlist, his price is really juicy. The other guys on my list are Marshall, Draper and English. English is more than likely my R1, his concussion and injury are an issue, but until otherwise, ill take him. Marshall same boat, minus the concussions, strong scorer when solo ruck. Draper, one and only ruck, he isnt gonna average 100+ but he will play each week and will score okay. Take out his 6 and 21 he has probably averaged 80 in 2022. Grundy speaks for himself, he cant play forward, Gawn is capable of taking a big grab and kicking goals, if Gawn goes down with an injury Grundy will be straight in.

And ill grab some shit kent 102k ruc/fwd

Draper is an interesting one. If you disregard his 1st 3 seasons, where he didn't play a game, he's 24yo coming into his 4th season and is the sole ruck as you mentioned, and priced well. I have a leaning to 4th year players on the improve, although technically it will be his 7th season. He's currently my R2.
