Question (in my best Dwight Schrute voice)

If and when we sell the farm for Reid (and i hope we’re already at our maximum offer), have we sought assurances from his management that he will extend first chance he gets?

To quote Sonny Corleone (long time draft expert), I don’t want to lose all those picks and be left holding our dicks in 3 years.

I would have thought that if it were possible to turn two picks in the teens into a top ten pick we would have done it by now. Further, that WC probably have even done their own inspection on that possibility and have come up with the same answer. So, even without 23 going back, pick 2 and two teen picks won't cut it because there isn't an avenue to making them turn into a top 10.

Which to me is perfectly fine. Use what we have. Get to draft night and see who wants to overpay when we reach 17 and 18.
This is what I said earlier. How many times in the past have we seen a player still left available at our 17 or 18 who another club rates highly. They will be prepared to pay up.
Our advantage is we have 17 AND 18, consecutive picks in the 1st Rd are great to have.
If we could turn 17 into a 2024 top 10 pick it would be awesome.
Death rides add an extra element to a season, you end up watching that team much more closely and celebrate every loss :p

It’s far from over. WC would be silly to accept anything yet. It’ll end up being one of those deals with some smoothing IMO.
I’m firmly of the belief anything more is absolutely suicidal for North, unless it’s a matter of simply using your existing picks to improve up without further dampening your hand.

Can someone explain the logic of a pick being worth less because it will be pushed back by F/S and Academy?

Just seems like an obsession with the overall number.

They're not players you have access to anyway, so why does it matter where they're taken?

If you have pick 10, and the draft goes Pick 1, 8x Father Sons, Pick 10, then you, you're still getting the Third best AVAILABLE player, same as if it went Pick 1, Pick 2, You, 7x Father Sons.

The only benefit you gain is being able to bid on F/S/Academy which by the draft you basically already know whether someone is committed to drafting a player that is expected to go in the first round.
The AFL Media either don't understand this, or I suspect choose to ignore it, as it plays into their ‘drama’ of picks being pushed back and as a consequence the general footy public don't understand it either partly because they are too lazy to think but mostly because there are stupid *, Pies, Saints & Blues supporters.

MODS time to update the Thread Title:

2023 Trade & List Management Thread III - 7 spots to fill, STOP posting scenarios where we trade picks 2 & 3 for 1.

… who is saying that though? On our board we don’t think that’ll happen, you don’t think it’ll happen. No one thinks that’ll happen

I think of that we’re in agreement.
Some expect that it’s the asking price, but we know North won’t and shouldn’t rise to it - if that is indeed the true ask then stick a fork in it.

It’s a matter of now can you package up the picks you offered up to someone else to get a second top ten pick

This, along with the ‘points value’ of trades.

Complete horseshit.

Mop you of all posters spend enough time in this thread to see there's at least one hypothetical mega club pick swap extravaganza per page where North are trading out picks 2 & 3 for 1 here's one from literally one page back.
The Eagles want to be able to pick up McKercher and Curtin. Potential four-way trade:
WCE
Out: 1, 23, Future 2nd
In: 2, 8

North
Out: 2, 3, 17, 18
In: 1, 6, 11

Melbourne
Out: 6, 11
In: 3, 18

Geelong
Out: 8
In: 17, 23, WCE Future 2nd
Yes North won't do it, Yes West Coast aren't expecting it but that doesn't stop posters suggesting it ad nauseam. It's almost as if some North Big Footy posters are desperate for us to dilute our best draft hand ever.

I’ll start by saying, I’m a nobody in regards to this topic…but sick of hearing the phantom trades on here where we trade both 2 & 3, even if it’s to get melbs 6…I hope the rumored 2 and two late first rounders(preferable 17 & 18) for 1 and 23 is where it ends…a bit overs but the first in the second round, sometimes get some good futures due to the first pick on the second night…

I think there is a few things in play:
  • North remove the second coming back
  • WC and North bundle 15, 17 and 23 together to get WC a pick in the top 10
  • Reid and Connors behind closed doors between now and draft night

This is something I hadn't considered, I still think we're giving up too much but it may be 'the key to unlocking the trade' as the journos like to say.

The media (and some WC posters) want to play it off as a desperate s*** fight for Pick 1, with WC bleeding other clubs. As was the case last year, thankfully it’s not the reality with Brady and Rohan. Ultimately if WC prefer 2 and say 7 or 8, then 1 and 23, they’ll work together to get it done.

This wont be done till draft night if its Geelongs 1st pick as they want Sanders so they will wait to see if he goes before then for them to trade...l'm not sure if GWS will trade as l feel that they like Geelong have they eye on someone also. This is why "IF" we go after the Cats pick then it will not be included in an offer to West Toast. We can only offer teen picks to them so "THEY" maybe able to do a trade deal with Geelong or GWS.

Wonder if we turn to Melbourne for a mutually beneficial deal.

Pick 3 for Pick 6 and 11 with a small sweetener.

We offer Pick 2 and 6 for Pick 1 and 23.

End up with 1,6,15,17,18,23

Guess it depends how close the top 6-7 are

After all deals are done we need to have either Picks #1 and #3 or #2 and #3 as our starting points. It just a shame that the Dawks have someone in mind for Pick#4 as l wouldn't mind offering our F1st for it...then use #17 and #18 for the Cats pick#8 when it comes around..

Ah yea, i can see why that makes sense. I suppose then it would be interesting to see who we would be targetting with the geelong pick if sanders is gone then too.

Would rather just bundle up our late firsts ourselves and get another top 10 pick.

Giving up 3 or 4 picks inside the top 20 to move one spot up the draft is so dumb.

It's more the value of the pick itself. Pick 15 isn't getting the 15th best prospect in junior footy, it's getting the 20th best. The academy and father sons players are still part of the draft crop.

I'm sure clubs have their list of eligible players ranked of course but in assessing the true value.of the pick you can't just pretend academy players don't exist. So it's relevant to say pick 15 becomes pick 20 because it more accurately represents the players available to you in the full draft pool and their quality range.
