I think it's fair for opposition supporters to undervalue our young talent. Larkey, McKay, Simpkin, LDU, and Zurhaar aren't young talent anymore, and the rest haven't exactly set the world on fire.

It needs to be the 2018 and 2019 drafts that lead this discussion, but there's nobody in that group for us that has opposition supporters jealous. Thomas was once that player, but until he proves himself again the entire AFL world will be down on him. Scott and Taylor on the other hand aren't exciting enough to make other supporters jealous and then there's Comben and Perez, who both have had their injury issues, but are at an age now where they need to prove themselves.

If you compare that to say Port Adelaide who walked out of those drafts with Rozee, Butters, Duursma, Georgiades, and Bergman, then I think we'd all admit that we don't stack up. At the end of the day, we had one pick in the top 30 across those drafts and Thomas, while talented, has his issues that he needs to work through before he is a relevant part of this discussion. Two years ago he was right up there as the number two to Walsh, but now his value has decreased tremendously.

Our hope needs to be that we nailed the 2020 to 2022 drafts. The best player from the 2020 draft at the moment is probably Errol Gulden. Gulden is a good player, but he perfectly shows how wide the gap is in development between the 2019 and 2020 crops, as I'd have a humongous gap between Gulden and the standouts from the 2019 crop such as Chad Warner, Caleb Serong, and Noah Anderson.

Max Holmes, Elijah Hollands, and Jamarra Ugle-Hagan are three who I think perfectly illustrate that criteria of young players from the 2020 crop who have elite talent and are ready to explode. For us that group is Tom Powell and Will Phillips, who both are ideally major parts of this rebuild.

If Powell and Phillips are talked about at the end of this year as two of the best from the 2020 crop, then our future will be in good hands. For the 2021 crop, Curtis, Goater, Bergman and Archer all look like they are all going to contribute this year, and while it's way too early to analyse the 2022 draft, we started with two of the four best players so have a major advantage. Then for 2023 we're also starting ahead of the pack with two first rounders.

If the AFL world wants to label our youth as below average right now, then I'm fine with that, but in two years the expectation needs to be that we have the best young talent in the AFL.

port had 3 x 1st rnd picks in 2018
they picked well

Taylor at 46 and Scott 55 a father son rated say in the 30s just doesn’t cut it as a valid comparison

When all is said and done Warner, who looks an absolute gun, was picked at 38
every club had multiple choices to pick him
and no one did

our major disappointment strategy wise was Polec and who knew that Jacobs and the long forgotten EVW who both looked like , to me anyway, long term hold a position down talents would not get on the park
and ahern
team planning would have hoped those guys worked out so you maybe draft thinking those spots are filled and then it turns out they aren’t

Good post. To add more hope re the pre 2019-20 drafts, sometimes talent remains latent for a while before it clicks collectively.

Most premiership teams seem to have a batch of players who weren't previously rated above good ordinary players (GOP) and another smaller cluster who were unfulfilled talents. Then one season it all "suddenly" clicks together and they achieve something bigger. Then in retrospect everyone marvels at the collective unit like it was always highly rated.

Maybe one day it'll be us who get to watch the GOP (eg Scott, Xerri etc) and the elite talent (LDU, TT etc) firing together and taking us places.

It is always subjective, but my thoughts -
A grade = top 15-20% at his position (in consideration for AA squad at his best) top 50-100?
Yep I agree that's about right for the definition.

I think Zurhaar, Simpkin, McKay and Logue will be in consideration for AA at some point in their careers.

was a fact

wasn't anything to 'get'

try again

player x is out of contract.... lets offer them money if it stays that way
I know you're upset, maybe a little embarrassed, but you'll be OK. You'll get through this. Back on the horse.

Can't believe I'm gonna defend nostrils but IMO he was just making the point that they have a glut of key forwards and it's feasible that at some point one of the younger ones looks for more opportunity elsewhere. He mentioned Darcy despite it being so unlikely only because he was out of contract. I don't think he actually expected him to sign with us.

Now let's move on to actual trade and list management topics pls

I thought all that went without saying

But somehow a lot of the board are too stupid to understand

Snoz spotted at last night's VFL praccie game between Port and the Blues.

Strange one.

Can't imagine he's scouting one of the Carlton guys, they aren't available until the end of the year and there will be plenty of vision of them. No one jumps out that played as a OOC priority.

You'd think he might be looking at a Port player, potentially for the MSD.
