KANGAS CAPTAIN WANTS TO PLAY HIS PART

RECENTLY re-signed North Melbourne co-captain Jy Simpkin believes the Kangaroos are ready to begin attracting mature-aged recruits, saying he wants to play an active role in pitching to the club's next wave of potential targets.

Simpkin last week chose to ignore the lure of free agency, signing a five-year extension on top of the season he had remaining in a long-term deal that will keep him with the Kangaroos until at least 2029.

Upon signing his deal, Simpkin said the club had built a solid platform of youngsters – led by its former first-round picks such as Harry Sheezel, George Wardlaw, Will Phillips and Tom Powell – and revealed his desire to play a part in future list management calls.

"It's really important that you do have those relationships with your list manager, like Brady Rawlings, because a lot of the time you do go through your junior footy playing with or against these sorts of players that you might be targeting," Simpkin told AFL.com.au.

"If they've got their eyes on players, we might know the ins and outs of someone who might be looking for a trade. It's important we do have those close relationships where we can work together. It's definitely something that I'll be pushing for in the future."

Simpkin's signature followed the two-year deals signed by top-four picks Sheezel and Wardlaw earlier this year, with the North Melbourne co-skipper hopeful their commitments could help persuade free agent Ben McKay to also stay at Arden Street.

"He's obviously been going back and forth for a while now in what he's going to do. You see it in the media. But hopefully he can start to see towards the future like I have. If I'm signing deals and hopefully we can get a few of the younger boys signing on, then it helps make his decision a lot easier," Simpkin said. – Riley Beveridge
Jy is all in and I love it. If BMac isn’t along for the ride, I feel it will be his loss. Loving the feel of stability we are finally seeing around the club.

Outstanding attitude.

Emerging as Glenn Archer, Anthony Steven style of leader thinking about the bigger picture for the club.

Mahony, Bonar, Young, Spicer, Edwards, Perez, Dawson and Hall are all in trouble. 8 gone off the senior list. None have played more than 4 games and thats Hall and hes 33 in November.
Howe and Turner gone off the rookie list. Thats 10.
Lazzaro has another year to go but could be paid out. Nowhere near it
Drury and Free 50-50 to stay on.
Shiels I would be happy to offer another deal to but he may say no.
McKay Free Agency.

Comben, Goldstein, Greenwood and Ziebell should all get 1 year contracts and may even give Charlie 2.

So theres atleast 11 changes there. If our over 30's decide they have had enough then could be more.

I'm concerned we'll stiff Goldstein in the name of succession. Truly hope to be wrong.

So am I. We've seen this year, however, how vulnerable his possible replacements are to injury. It must be great for the young midfield to learnt together with him there too.
Mad not to give another year.

I'm not paying what Hawthorn would want for him though.

He's definitely not a bust yet, but there's alarm bells if a side like Hawthorn, in the middle of a rebuild, is willing to offload one of their top picks they have invested in, in the last 3 years.

Just as you made the Phillips comparison, there would be alarm bells if we tried to offload him or Goater.

Most clubs, rightly, would be asking "Why are you getting rid of him?"

No side has a better understanding of his limitations than Hawthorn.
Or Clarkson.

With Xerri syndesmosis, Comben syndesmsis and Free shoulder, all out for the year. Edwards can’t get a kick and CCJ looking like at best a part time, more forward option?
Who’s going to take the mantle Hansen Jnr?

Goldy has been the best ruckman in the comp over the last 4 weeks and probably top 5 in 2023.
I’d be absolutely shattered if we move him on.
If we move him on, we deserve whatever pain comes our way. No other club treats their champions as ****ing disrespectfully as us

i dont mind getting rid of goldy so long as we get a ready made depth player in as part of the ruck merry go round (someone like Matt Flynn at the giants who is an unrestricted free agent stuck behind briggs) who has more years in him

who can then support Xerri
CCJ will be more the third tall forward/pinch hit second ruck

Me too. But the round 1 selection was ominous and we only gave him a 1 year deal after a pretty solid finish to 2022.
Given Comben and Xerri have only played few games due to injury, I hope they will realise we need to give him another year. Imagine if he wasnt at North with these two out! I shudder at the very thought. It goes without saying, his form warrants another year.

Earlier this year, in the run up to his 300th game, Goldy said that he wants to stay on next year, possibly in a mentoring role. His exact words were that "he would “quite possibly” agree to play on even if his role was purely as a backup to Xerri and the Roos’ other young talls" - ‘Hopefully I’ve got a few more’: Goldstein keen to play on in 2024 ahead of 300th game

people talking about trading goldy?
Go Crazy Wtf GIF

Some talk we are into Tom Doedee from the Crows.

Management would be mad to let go of Goldy especially if he has indicted he would play the backup role and a free mentor/coach the rucks & midfield in '24 - ffs a standard min 1yr contract with no guarantee of 1st team selection..1yr contract for Howe or 1yr contract for Goldy, l know which player is infinitely more valuable!!
