Our gameplan should now involve 2 uses of Ben McKay if reports are accurate:

i) Friendly Fire.

eg: Sure Jack, you can't mouth off at an umpire or hit an opponent when you're frustrated.

But there's no penalty for "accidentally" putting a knee into a teammates back or hell, taking their face off with a clumsy spoil.

ii) Shits and Giggles

eg: Play on Charlie Cameron. Go mind Kosi. Hey Benny, you'll need to run on a wing with Langdon for a couple of quarters.

A bottle of Pepperjack Shiraz (Todd Viney - Official Ambassador - likes this) for the selection committee member who comes up with the most creative use of a turncoat each week.

Do it North. You know it makes sense.

(ps - Ben might've got himself the Pepperjack with his headstart on the Shits and Giggles category last week)

I'm still taking Dow for nothing. Get his salary off Carlton books. Buy Dow, Williams & 6. McKay goes to Port, we either get a 1st PP or we force a trade.

#1 WCE
#2 NMFC (own)
#3 NMFC (PP)
#4 NMFC (McKay pick)
#5 HAW
#6 RICH
#7 GWS
#8 NMFC (Carlton)
#9-#18 Who cares
#19 NMFC (Port pick)

In: Dow (mid depth, potential improvement in new club), Williams (releases Goater/Bergman to a wing, replaces Hall long term if fit), Watson @2 (elite small forward), Edwards @3 (long term Goldstein replacement and cover for if Xerri ends up being no good) McKercher @4 (all round midfielder/wing jet), A.Reid @8 (either end KPP for development), Freijah @19 (HBF/wing hard running athlete)

Out: McKay, cash, #2, #3, #4, #8, #19, delistees

:Stern look

What sort of pick do we get if we agree to give Craig Mathieson a board position?

This is the type of trade post we need more of.

Yeah, yeah, Collingwood this, Collingwood that.

Phillips and Powell cover the ground just fine. McKay will likely be someone else’s issue.
So does Mahony if you actually paid attention to his last AFL outing and not just based your analysis over old biases like tao does these days.

Dow is yuck. Carlton VFL watchers say his disposal is unreliable, that he always gets rid of the ball too quickly, and that he offers nothing defensively. I don't remember ever being impressed by anything he did at AFL level. Tom Powell is 2x the player that Dow is and people are throwing his name up as a trade bait option.

Just because a player is at another club and you've barely ever seen him play, it doesn't mean he's any good. We had people on here excited for Howe and Tucker. To anyone who actually pays attention to games that don't involve North, it was obvious we weren't gonna be getting that much from either of them.

Tucker is a solid player and a pretty good get for steak knives. Howe is/ was just depth usage of extra rookie picks.

IF we lose McKay, it has to be for first round compo and with that we either take Curtin as a long term replacement or upgrade with WC so they get Curtin and we get Reid and Wiz.
If the later, we probably need that salary dump money to after a FA the following year which will likely be a KDP.

Tucker's vanilla as all shit. Scott's last two games have been better than 99% of what he's ever produced, at Freo or with us. I'm not saying he's rubbish, but I'm saying the excitement over his recruitment was way overblown given his performance record. Same goes for Howe. Regardless of how cheaply they came. There are very good reasons why their clubs were happy to let them go

Is Dow as explosive/athletic as he was portrayed predraft?

He was compared to Dangerfield. Putting aside kicking (and any jokes implying Dangerfield is a s**t kick), does he actually have that burst of movement in his game?

From my limited viewing have never seen it in him.
Doesnt matter imo, LDU and Wardlaw have burst. Simpkin dances through traffic, Phillips in and under and Powell elite hands to feed out. Throw in Zurhaar to pinch hit as the big body crash n bash and its a really nice mix imo.

I think we just be thankful that Carlton took him in the first place and leave it at that.

my Freo supporting family were stoked to get rid of Tucker.

Boys relax I never suggested we get Padraigh. Just want to know if he did end up anywhere near as powerful as they made out.

Carlton believe he is a known quantity and he isn’t up to AFL standard. Basically he is on Voss’ s**t list.

Problem is they aren’t giving him an extended crack at his best position which is a centre square midfielder. Every game he has played over the last few years they’ve had him off a wing, or off a flank.

FFS they have Matt Kennedy (who is a slow plodder with deplorable disposal) and Zac Fisher (meh) rotating through the midfield. If given an opportunity Dow would s**t all over those two.
Yeah I was just a bit surprised they didn't select him with all the injuries and his form seems to have been ok at VFL level.

Just back on the Pick 6/Carlton Salary Dump exercise.

I think it is 100% worth a look at.

To potentially enter a draft with 2/3/6/17 is a ridiculous hand to hold.

I'd be looking at trading any of pick 6 and 17 for established players. Preferably key defenders.
I wouldn't trade 6. I'd take Caddy with that pick hopefully. We can do the trading for established players in 2025 when we've had two drafts to replace the ones who haven't worked out imo. Crows targeted Dawson and Rankine in the 4th or 5th year of the build when the young group was closer to 50 games at least.

Tucker's been solid, had shocking run with injury. Will judge him next year after a proper pre-season.
He's kinda what I expected him to be, a competent AFL footballer that can help us. We don't have many left footed wing players either.

I wish we could be more mature as an industry and if it's true that Ben is out the door both parties should be able to announce it and we should be able to put him out to pasture for the year.

If he is leaving it serves neither the destination club, us or Ben to be playing the last 12 weeks.

Unfortunately the compensation system means we'd still have to be seen clinging to his leg in case we need to push for arbitration.
