The Port pick is dead in the water if we are allowed to bid on Sanders, he is going to get a bid way before that pick. We have to wait and see, but the general consensus of "experts" is that we will get to match a bid on Sanders.
If we have to burn the Pt pick on Sanders, then might as well trade it with another for Reid and use up a whole lot of later picks instead of the Pt one.

That was my whole point.

It’s pretty simplistic.

  • Take Reid at Pick 1
  • Get less from North but lock in Curtin
  • Get more from another club but most likely miss out on Curtin

At the end of the day I think everyone will find, they just draft Reid and back themselves in to keep him long term. They won’t get anywhere near these fantastical deals being thrown up if they deal with us.
WC showed their hand last year, they rate local talent above interstate talent.

If we think WC want Curtain why would we trade with WC at all? They take Reid pick one, we likely take Curtin pick 2, or WC take Curtain pick one and we take Reid.

If they want the local talent I don't think WC can trust we wont pick Curtain if Reid is off the table.

Having said that I'd be happy either way. I rate Curtain and would be a great help if we were to lose Mackay. Personally think Curtain would be an upgrade on Mackay. I'd then be keen on Duursma with the compo. Get a Mid/FWD rotation happening with Sheez and Duursma.

I used the word fantasy in my comment buddy.

My honest thoughts is the absolute best offer we'll receive for pick one is from the Demons if they secure GC first and it would be Freo 1st, GC 1st and F1.

Now I see that as possible because I heard that the Demons will be coming hard for the pick with an offer along those lines.
From memory it was suggested 3 picks and O'Brien mentioned somewhere north of that.

I'd imagine they would attempt to trade for it. They have the picks to do so with 5, 15, 24, 34, 89
How do you guys get pick 5 in the Reid deal if it is used to secure GC pick 4?
Also GC aren’t interested in pick 5 as it completely defeats the purpose of getting rid of pick 4.
I’d imagine GC want a decent future pick & some loose change in this draft as they already have heaps of points in this draft.
You guys should just take Reid… apart from him reportedly being a ‘flight risk’ he is perfect for you guys building a midfield.
Likewise, Curtin is perfect for us IMO as we need to build a defence with McKay leaving.
If WC want Curtin I think a deal will need to be done with NM as we will (should) be picking him with pick 2 or pick 3 if MacKay FA triggers band 1 compo.

Reid is telling his school mates that he's not fussed where he plays, but would prefer North then WC. Reckon the week North had Pick 1 may have got him thinking more about sticking around VIC.

NGA BIDDING CHANGES DISCUSSED

THE POTENTIAL to align the Next Generation Academy bidding system with the northern Academy rules is among the suggestions put forward by clubs as the AFL reviews its NGA system.

The League has had ongoing reviews of the NGA system – its rules, the access to talent for clubs, the eligibility process – across the year, with club views strong on questioning the pick 40 threshold on when they are able to match bids on NGA products.

Clubs have felt that benchmark for priority access to Indigenous and multicultural prospects in the draft was too late to warrant huge investment in the programs without the benefit of the best players within their zones.

Northern Academy clubs, like those with father-sons, have access to matching bids at any stage of the draft, with limitations only on how many per season clubs inside the top eight and top four can take inside the top 20 picks.

But club feedback on NGA provisions will be put forward on the Academy bidding systems aligning, while other clubs have suggested that clubs should need to retain a selection within a certain range of where the bid could come on a player so that they cannot trade out of a pick and match with later picks and points.

While the review is undergoing this year, any possible changes wouldn't be brought in until the 2024 draft. – Callum Twomey

FUTURE PICKS REQUIRED FOR TRADE UP

CLUBS will consider dangling their future first-round picks to help break into the top end of this year's draft with a standout group of prospects emerging.

The top 10 picks of this year's draft have been set after the end of the home and away season but there is still expected to be plenty of movement, with Gold Coast to trade out its pick No.4, West Coast listening to offers on No.1, North Melbourne looking at ways to creep up from No.2 and a potential draft compensation pick coming in for Ben McKay.

Outside of the points-hunting Suns, clubs don't expect that bundling first-round picks with second-round picks will see any clubs interested in backing out of the top 10, with the likelihood that future first-round would be required to jump into the top echelon of the draft.

Collingwood looms as a club that could look to package its future first-round pick with its first-rounder this year to move up the draft order, with its current indicative draft hand being No.18, 33 and 74.

Harley Reid, Zane Duursma, Nick Watson, Daniel Curtin, Colby McKercher, Connor O'Sullivan, Ryley Sanders and Nate Caddy have developed into the standout top group of draftees this year outside of Gold Coast Academy pair Jed Walter and Ethan Read. – Callum Twomey

ROOKIE RULE IN MOTION

THE AFL is contemplating extending the length of time a mid-season recruit can spend on the rookie list, after receiving support from clubs in a recent survey.

Under the current rules, players are required to be promoted to the senior list after three years on the rookie list.

Players selected in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft are currently more vulnerable given they only have two full seasons to prove themselves – if they secure a deal beyond the initial six- or 18-month contract – after arriving halfway through their first season.

Hawthorn midfielder Jai Newcombe is the poster boy of the Mid-Season Rookie Draft and the best player taken from the 2021 class, but others from that draft – Collingwood ruckman Aiden Begg, Melbourne key defender Daniel Turner, West Coast forward Connor West – all face uncertain futures right now.

Increasing the length of time on the rookie list won't be limiting financially and will provide clubs with greater flexibility.

If this is approved as expected, Ash Johnson will remain on Collingwood's rookie list next year, along with Greater Western Sydney forward James Peatling. Both have contracts for 2024. Johnson is also contracted for 2025. Wade Derksen and Max Ramsden also secured two-year deals this year which could see them remain on the rookie list for the duration of those deals.

Clubs have also expressed views on transferring primary listed players seamlessly to the rookie list without having to delist them first and then select them in the Rookie Draft, while there is also a push for the delisted free agency window to be introduced earlier.

AFL player movement manager Ned Guy has given clubs until September 1 to complete the survey with some changes expected to be implemented swiftly. – Josh Gabelich

Interesting Twomey said Chol is gettable this offseason.

A Chol + Graham twofer deal would be great.

Chol would be very handy. At least he is a bit more mobile and dynamic than CCJ or X in the forward line. He is more than capable of pinch hitting in the ruck too.

I think picking up Chol would fill a big hole potentially for 3-4 seasons and allow us to focus on filling other gaps with higher draft picks 👍 know nothing about graham is he a potential target?

They're both quality talls being used as depth for opposite ends of the ground at GC. They both have negligible prospects for consistent game time at GC going forward. Neither are OOC, so unlikely we could get them for packets of chips, but they'd still be good value targets to service our current needs. They'll be 23 and 27 respectively next year, so in the right age demographic for us too.

Pass on Chol for me. He’s been super average up there and had no impact last weekend against the bottom side with a stitched together team. Besides, didn’t he go up there because he was homesick/family reasons?

If Phillips and Powell get beaten out for midfield time by two 19 year olds then thats on them.

Reid and McKercher are unlikely to be pure inside mids in their first couple of seasons. Reid would play down back or up forward. McKercher would play on the wing or HBF.

Competition for spots is a good thing. Why are we trying to avoid Phillips and Powell having to compete for their spots?
They're already competing for those spots against a bunch of quality mids.

Just doesn’t seem to play with the aggression that we missed from a second tall in our forward line. I want someone who really attacks the ball like Charlie did.

He's obviously no Ben King, but he was their leading goal scorer last year.

Any KPF we draft won't be ready for consistent game time from the get go, and Comben is impossible to plan around.

Agree with this. The interest I have in him is giving him 1 year to try and turn him into a defender on the cheap, but I don't think he's worth a list spot as a forward or ruck.
