The nature of this kind of situational analysis is that it changes regularly. One serious injury can change everything.
I reckon your position by position "chapters" are pretty spot on. As younger players develop and older ones decline it's not too hard to see what changes. The real difficulty is in this last step and putting it all together in a list with contracts and real live human to muck things up.
If we assume that at the end of 2024 there are no players retiring and no-one wanting to be traded then who we delist becomes a crucial component in maintaining list balance. Almost certainly we will delist two tall defenders as a number are OOC. Not currently best 22 but OOC are: Arnold, Buller, Edwards, Fox, Francis, Kirk, Konstanty, Magor, McAndrew, Mitchell, Reid and Vickery. Melican best 22. Crunch time but opportunity from the list management perspective.
Yeah, it's a point in time forecast definitely, with a bunch of assumptions. There's positions that could go from greener to problematic within a year or two, and maybe if there's some (less likely development), some others that look better in 12 months time.

To Bloods86. This has to be the most insightful piece of analysis I have read in my short time on BF. Deserves a 100 likes.

My only build on this is I think we need to recruit for speed in the mids forwards and backs (1 of each). Fast players are good players. I like fast players.

Agree with needing more pace in next years draft/free agency period. Would round the team out well. Recall the year Rohan and Jetta were drafted the coaches or front office saying they were targeting speed that draft. Think it's time to do it again.

Pace doesn't necessarily make a good footballer but needed at this point in my mind to add balance to the squad. In any or all of the following positions ... smaller type lockdown defender, running half back, small forward. Would be good to add more depth and quality in those areas.

We have speed in most areas, aside from positions where you usually don't find it anyway. Even ignoring older players like Cunningham and Papley, who are quite quick, there's a bunch of kids with good speed or acceleration:

Vickery as small def
Magor as medium def
Blakey, JMac and Campbell at HB/Wing
Gulden
The Warner bros and Sheldrick have a good burst away from contests (Chad just needs better awareness)
Wicks doesn't usually go for long runs, but is quite quick to the ball or contest

Will Edwards for a big fella has a sharp turn of speed. From the size his muscles looks like he is really training for a power role.

McCartin is also pretty quick off the mark.

Thank you. I feel obliged to mention all of its shortcomings but I'm terrible at taking compliments, so I'll just run with this.

TMac on Pickett showed he can find some burst and maintain it when needed.

I can criticize it without reading it if that will make you feel better

Edwards ran the 20m in 2.86sec (or maybe less.. can't remember?) That was the fastest out of all the national and state combines
Snell is also bloody quick... think he ran the 20m sprint in 3.02 sec
TMac on Pickett showed a turn of speed, but his strength is his Strength.. A couple of years ago the Swans players voted him as the person they didn't want to wrestle during the pre-season.
Last year I watched Melican catch up to Rioli running at full speed!

It'll be an interesting year for KPDs (tall defenders). Tmac, Melican, Francis, Arnold, Edwards, Snell, Hamling (Blakey).. not all will be on the list for 2025. Will one or two step up, or at least show signs? Will the Swans need to try and trade an expensive KPD again?
I hope we can find a good defensive set up out of these current players.. would love to take our 2 x 1st round picks to the draft and continue that line of young players coming through

Pretty disappointing analysis. Lacks any depth of understanding of our list beyond seniors. And even then ignores McLean as a factor. Mitchell as a defender, doesn't know we have Edwards as a tall KPD. Konstanty "didn't set the world on fire". Meh!

Yes. Agree it was a thin analysis.

He admits he doesn't know much about our list, and it clearly shows.

Found the bit about us interested in Harry Edwards interesting...

Must admit I am really looking forward to seeing how Will Edwards progresses next year. For me he has a lot of attributes size, anthleticism, ability and enthusiasm.

Totally agree. We know we will have McCartin, Hamling, Snell and Blakey (not a KPD I'm sure we agree) still under contract.
You would imagine that at least one and possibly two of Melican, Francis, Arnold (Rookie A) and Edwards (Rookie B) will not be offered new contracts.
Hamling is not long term so he's a self-solving issue. I'm hopeful for Edwards because of his size and athleticism. As to the other three it will be a big year!

I've always believed one shouldn't speak on things one doesn't know about.

It's why, after numerous invitations now, I still refuse to present at the United Nations General Assembly.

I agree there's not a lot of valuable insight but he shows a waaaay better understanding of our list than most in the media. I think his best 22 is decent. His analysis of our performance in 2023 was very fair I thought. He was perceptive enough to include Wicks in the team. He showed an awareness of who we have in the reserves. I don't think Edwards rates a mention at this early stage of his development. Konstanty didn't set the world on fire in 2023 even if it was mostly due to injury. So while the analysis was thin it was a fair precis of where we're at for the non-diehard Swans fan.

Lots of posts. I thankyou you all. Your dedication to your keyboards has nourished my mind.
But
I reckon
Our defense has 7 KPDs. 7. What does that say? We have enough. High experience and low tenure. Lownexperience and low tenure. It will work itself out. btw I like the look of Snell and Edwards.
The mids are stacked. Additions of Adams and Jordon adds grunt and depth. Additions of Cleary and Kirk add to the pipeline. The additions of another preseason to 3 for Sheldrick, Roberts and Corey suggests breakout season. Mitchell is still there.
Ruck is pure gold. Grundy has ascended from heaven, Green paid off other clubs just to get to us. He is the smartest ruck in the AFL. Probably rich too.
Forwards we are richly enamored with talent and long term contracts to most of our key talls. We need a trip to Maccas to fill us up.
2024 is too far away for my anticipation of ultimate success.
It is too long too wait to see Sheldrick shine.
Adams to dominate.
Jordon to weave some magic inside and out.
Corey and Mitchell and others to push the seniors hard for spots.
This is an exciting season to look forward to in 2024.

All these new recruits, up and comers, natural improvement of our young guns leaves us with maybe 30 pushing for top 22. Haven’t been this excited about our depth for ages. I think team selection will come down to team chemistry - which combinations gel best. Think lots of trial and error before we nail it. Very bullish about 2024. I like fast players.
