Oh boy wowee all the sooking about Collard/Hill… I agree with the post above, Hill has played one A-grade level game in his career.
Have only seen highlights of Collard but yeah he does look good. One thing I will say is that from afar, I would say the the list management team were definitely not expecting to lose Lachie Schultz. So that would have an impact on our drafting strategy I would think.
Also, as far as Marlion Picket goes, the bloke is a jet. VERY good footballer. Never see him make a bad decision and can play almost anywhere on the ground. I can see why we didn’t draft him though, he would have been chewed up and spit out by The West if he was playing for us. Which is a shame, woukd have been a really good addition to this list.

I don't agree with the sentiment. Premierships are not won by the 20-30th players on the list. Billy Frampton is going to go down in history as a perfect example that really crap players are part of premiership winning teams.
If your top fifteen are good enough, they can carry you all the way. You just need the depth to get you through the home and away season.
That's why the experts are banging on about availability being highly valued in the AFL, you need good players who don't get injured.
Early wins are also crucial so you can rest and manage players before the finals.

I don't disagree but looking at this list I don't see the absolute elite quality to drag out there without more support. Like I'm not saying Serong Young Jackson Amiss etc aren't elite but I'm not sure they can pull the rest over the line.

The fact Collard is getting a game even in these preseason matches speaks to how highly Ross views him already. He should be very easy to get back and I'll be extremely disappointed if we dont get him in the next 4 years tbh.

Do you know something ? or just going through on the sentiment that his preference was to stay in WA?

He was supposed to be one of the biggest flight risks out of WA ever, literally wanted to head back during the U19s carnival. Both WA clubs will be all over him I imagine

Like all these kids that are a risk, they settle down get looked after like God.
I can't see him being available any time soon.
Watched him a fair bit last year, he's electric

I'd only take McDonald if he was value.
He's not Luke Jackson

writing that last post reallly highlighted for me how much lachie s leaving has hurt our team.

The need for a collard or bolton or pickett or simpson (ok being a little optomistic) to get our team to the next level is pretty profound.

Sam taylor is a need
Logan mcdonald is a need
But a lightning fast / mercurial small
Forward is a must!

Surely there are lists in a rebuild that would swap 2 1sts for what we need?

Btw think zurhaar is worth the gamble if we dont pay overs. He adds something different to our forwards that is only going to make it harder for opposition players to defend against.

I'm glad you've come around Snuff 😉 I watched this bloke live and couldn't understand why he wasn't rated by Walls/people on this board. He is a little raw and will take some time to develop but he should be in purple right now. Duursma will also be the best player of the draft in 5 years time IMO but he was out of our reach.

Yeah Duursma was extremely impressive today. Im with others hoping North just bottle the whole thing somehow

Hope Walls was playing a 4D chess thinking that Collard will 100% be back to WA very soon due to homesickness.
Collard might not even put it all together at the top level. It's a risk but one I would have been willing to make. I just hope we didn't turn him down because he didn't fit the church choir mould.

I wanted Collard as much as anyone, but Simpson is such a recent Freo pick and Collard is not. Collard might be a top bloke (I know nothing but the homesick stuff) but if he struggled with being away from home that much, he probably has a bit of maturing to do. It's not a knock on him because people mature at different rates, but you're taking a risk because that growth might not be what you expect.

Also Walls tried to trade up a number of targets were in the thinking. First up was a pick around 8-12. Then we tried again around the 20-24 mark. That may not have been Collard but we just didn’t have the pieces unless we sold the farm. Clubs in the top 10-15 wanted to only drop a few spots for a very decent sweetener. Have a look at the Adelaide trade for Curtin. Collard ended up going quite a bit before our first pick which we traded up for as it was.

Posters can’t say Walls wasn’t interested in Collard - we just don’t know. There is also a point where the cost is not worth it. Our selections from the draft look sound. Two second round picks and a fourth round pick.

IIRC he got asked and said we had interest but had to see where he landed or something like that. Read between the lines from there.

If we rated him in his projected range, it was a simple matter of taking the Pies first for Schultz. I don't think its a stretch to say we weren't prioritising him.

Walls said Collard had a lot of developing to do.

Fair call. I’m glad they went with the F1. That selection in 2023 was pick 25. Even if they win the whole thing again I doubt it will drop to 25 again.

We had room on the list to develop players at that stage. If the player has the talent than surely you take the punt. Walls wasn't interested otherwise we would have gotten Collingwood's first rounder. Maybe it's a blessing in disguise he ended up at the Saints. Ross will whip him into shape.

Logan McDonald is a must!

After watching Port dismantle Freo talls with ease and yes they were missing Amiss/Jackson but * it was hard viewing seeing Tabs/Treacy run around in the forward 50.

I’m a fan of Treacy but he’s just not quite there and I don’t think he will hit the heights we’re all hoping for.

McDonald/Amiss will be a deadly combination. Freo just need to get the wins on the board this year and get close to or sneak into the finals 🙏 to entice him to come to the dockers.

Beating Sydney twice this year would go a long way to achieving both goals.

He doesn’t just have it, he has something we lack, pace. Reminds me a little of Luke shuey.. looks quick over 20m
strong agree. his explosiveness over the first 10-20 was there to see and his first use was generally good.

don't want to load the kid with too much expectation too soon, but i think we have a player there.

hope he gets the minutes to prove himself on the biggest stage ASAP.

You still need elite small forwards that can defend and attack.
Malakai Champion sounds like one to keep an eye on.
The issue with Tabs is that he doesn’t sync with other talls.
Treacy and Amiss, add Jackson they can spread the defence.
At worst the ball hits the ground, and we need players who can crumb
or read the play. At worst lock the ball in, stop the rebound.
You have Walters, Emmett and Simpson, but a specialist small must be a
Priority.
