I have never deleted anything as quickly as this morning when I deleted the Quarters & Mouth Breather version of the old Duff & Quarters one. As if we need another Eagles sycophant on a pod, and in this case one who has been done for plagiarism and sacked, can't string a phrase together let alone a sentence and is as insightful as a teacup pig with a head injury that's swallowed a bottle of vodka.

The only thing that would be more hellish would be a Hack & Dumich pod.

Thanks to the West for giving me back a couple of hours every week during the footy season. Not a chance I let that new pod get a run.
Not going to lie, I was even going to bother trying it. Duff carried quarters big time on that pod.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

Yeah he did for sure, but at least Quarters gave a different view than just a WA-centric, Eagles boot licking sound bite crap. His Vic view was a nice listen from time to time. That was why I didn't listen when they had Readings on. It went back to an Eagles cheer squad show. That's what it will be now.

Barich has zero credibility in the game and has less than zero people who will talk to him from Freo so we can forget about anything useful coming out of that.

I'm not a huge fan of Hardballs to be honest because Ellis puts very little effort or thought in to it and Daniels misses so many pods and the other dude is is born and raised on League in Qld FFS. It does do a decent job though so it looks like that's it for me. Back Chat as well maybe.

For a league as popular as the AFL there is a dearth of decent content in the pod space.

I thought Duff and Quarters were quite balanced. They talked about more teams with a WA centric POV.

I can't do The Age RealFooty podcast because all Caroline Wilson does is bang on about Richmond. They give very poor football analysis as they are so focused on off-field drama.

Agreed on D&Q, was a good listen for the reasons you say.

Never tried The Age one for the Caro reasons. Would rather shave my nuts with a live alligator than listen to that ambulance chasing halfwit.

First Crack on Fox is OK-ish. The Fox Footy pod with the 3 young blokes is OK but as with most Melbourne stuff they have zero idea outside Vic. There's really nothing else. I'm sure there's Adelaide based content but as if that'd be worth a listen.

Something like Around the NFL for the AFL would be great and that's what the Fox Footy pod could be but fails dismally at covering the whole league.

I like first crack most of the time but Kingy really has a hard time talking positively about us. Maybe now that Ross has another gig he'll let it go.

Agree about the general lack of coverage though. Should be much better.

To be 100% honest, I'd back 50% of Bigfooty posters to know as much as reporters / journalists know about footy and footy teams. Maybe we are bit more one-eyed then the good ones (ie not Barrich) but most people on here really know their stuff so the main reason I'll listen to a podcast is for a bit of a laugh as well as just general chat on the AFL. HBG hits that spot pretty well for me. D&Q was great for basically reaffirming my thoughts though and getting any possible extra info from Duff, obviously we wont be getting that from Barrich.

Getting a pod with actual in depth football analysis is basically impossible

Yeah it's tough with first crack because I REALLY like Montagna but looking at David Kings face make me ill

Putting this in miscellaneous but I am really not enjoying having traded our 1st round pick this year. It means the only outcome I can enjoy is us doing well (finals minimum) as there is nothing to look forward to if we're ****. I can't deal with the added pressure even though literally none of it is on me.

Should probably go in the vent thread.
Vent doesn't quite cut it either

Sounds like we need a holding space / support thread - where you can share your fears and vulnerabilities as a freo supporter and we simply listen and be there for you

I long for the day when a special comments figure on a footy broadcast takes apart the game plans and stoppage tactics of the teams playing in front of them live on TV - but we don't have that, let alone the talent in the podcast field.

The journalism field rewards digging for scandals and speculating on people losing their jobs more than it does enrichment of the general discussion on how the game is being played and it's mostly because of people like Robbo who have a more passionate, emotional connection to the game than an analytical dork who sees the contest win percentage on each line leading to results.

Just imagine watching Saturday night footy on TV and they cut across to David Mundy who is watching from a coaches box perspective, calling out the tactical shifts that have been made mid quarter, as they are happening, as clubs hold up a symbol and he identifies the change in game style and positioning on the fly - predicting what will happen like Ricky Ponting talking about what he expects the bowler to do next.

Of course, the very next week Mundy will be signed to an AFL club to advise them and we lose it.

Yeah, it's depressing. The average AFL fan knows close to as much about footy as journalists because there is absolutely no effort to produce actual analysis during games. The game has seemingly progressed so far tactically in the last 10 years but we as fans have been left behind with no effort on coverage to help us understand. Coaches must tear there hair out with some of the questions they field.

First crack does seem to be one of the few pieces of media that at least goes into some statistical analysis post games but like I said, looking at Kings smug annoying face is enough to turn anyone off. We'll never get anything in game, Buckley is the best we'll be allowed

The AFL season preview was on Fox/Kayo last night, my god Robbo is off his chops, how this guy is still on is a credit to him because he's fkd. Can't hold more than a couple of names in his head at once and has absolutely no clue about non-victorian teams.

None of the talking heads had any real idea what's going on about Freo, they've paid no attention whatsoever, everyone of them is like, hmm, lost Lobb, top goal scorer, gee I just can't see where their goals are going to come from this year. Absolutely brain dead, but I punished myself thoroughly watching the whole show. Few surprises coming to the Vics when they realise Freo are a better side than they thought.

Y'know I've been thinking about this, to know every club and their background well is actually quite the task.

I mean I don't really know what goes on with West Coast and they're down the road? Maybe these national shows should get others to provide periodic updates on what is happening interstate. For example, I have diddly idea about what's going on with Sydney if watching the media and well.. they made the grand final last year.

But if that was your job? I think it's reasonable for a football journalist to have more than a surface understanding of each club.

Tried the Age one for the first time last night. Incredible Vic centric but that's it's audience I guess. Almost got all the way through their opening episode for the year until Caro started complaining about not enough MCG games on Saturday afternoons (code for not enough big Rich/Coll). Cry me a ****ing river Caro, it's a national game.

I'll give the Quarters and Barra podcast a chance. I know that he's an Eagles boy but Barich does talk us up a fair bit on Twitter. Much more than a certain Goose does anyway. Hard Ball Gets is fun for the bants but low on the footy analysis.

Does anyone listen to the Will Schofield one? Apparently it's quite good?

really annoys me how the 'national' footy media is so poor for actually covering the league. don't give a shit personally if the Age, Herald Sun etc are vic centric, that's their audience whatever. But then those same people hop on Fox Footy, 7/9 stuff with no difference which gives me the shits

On another complainy sort of note, it's incredible how many podcasts' analysis of us has been "struggle to score, 7th to 10th". The amount of leeway these journalists are able to give to the weaknesses of Richmond, Carlton, Brisbane, Collingwood, Bulldogs, but then take us to task on ours is infuriating.

the fact there's more good AFL Fantasy podcasts then actual AFL podcasts is great stuff

i've loved the pieces from the Age etc that have tried to 'narrow down' who can win the flag this year, and it ends up being 7 of the 8 sides who played finals last year with us being the only absence

who are the 2 injured for North in the 'double injury blow' that the West is referring to?!

But if that was your job? I think it's reasonable for a football journalist to have more than a surface understanding of each club.
Exactly. Most of them clearly don't even watch every game which I thought would be the least of the requirements.

100%. No doubt scoring is an issue, but I think the only way regress significantly is if our defense declines, which was literally a few points off the best for the season (over 22 games).

It's just lazy. They know they get paid either way and since nobody puts out a good analysis product, nobody even tries.
