Possible Team Changes

Carlton are likely to have McGovern, Martin, and Marchbank available for this game, although whether all 3 come in with no recent game time under their belts is the question we're all asking. Zac Williams was subbed out of the last game with glute soreness, so is also a test. Brodie Kemp went back to the VFL and racked up some impressive numbers.

Of those likely to make way for any of these possible ins, Lewis Young is under the most pressure as two key defenders are available, and their is no obvious matchup for him in a smaller Melbourne forward line. Similarly, Martin is a medium forward and the team has been carrying 3 small forwards with 3 key forwards, so haven't had a point of difference. If Martin comes in, it will be for the underperforming Fantasia or Durdin, though the latter is likely to stay because of his pace and slightly better form prior to last week.

Ollie Hollands was a late out for the VFL side on the weekend, after being dropped from the seniors due to an accumulation of less than stellar form. This may have caused a structural issue as Matt Cottrell was taken away from productive half forward role, and we didn't have a defensive forward to stop the opposition run. It is possible we may return Hollands to the side to provide the balance we missed against the Pies, and it might pay to remember that Hollands was instrumental in the passage of play that put the Blues in front against the Dees in the semi final last season.

What needs to happen

Melbourne will go to school on how Pendlebury and the Pies midfield took down Cripps and the Blues midfield. It is possible they look at Viney to take Cripps out of the play, but traditionally these two clubs are content for their bulls to go head to head, so the Cripps v Oliver battle may continue.

The Blues rucks will double team Gawn and try to exhaust him. They're not going to give the tap service that they have been of late though, so Carlton are going to have to abandon the tactic of standing deep and pushing their opposition under the ball. They tried this against the Pies who simply pushed them deeper and used leg speed to take the ball away. Gawn can place the ball wherever he likes so the Carlton midfield are going to tighten up the circle against the Dees and make it a scrap until the half backs, half forward and wingers arrive to help. Carlton tried to use Walsh and Hewett to be the forward outlet in the 6-6-6 configuration, while Kennedy languished on the pine as sub. I think we all know that Kennedy is at his best when he is kicking inside 50 and spotting up a leading tall forward. Kennedy and Cripps are our offensive midfielders, Cerra and Hewett our defensive midfielders and Walsh is balanced across both. Our centre set ups need to account for this.

Defensively, we need to plan for Fritsch and Kickett who seem to carve us up regularly. I see Kemp as having the athleticism and pace to match Fritsch, but not necessarily the smarts. Cowan has the aggression and smarts for Fritsch but not necessarily the athleticism and pace. Depending on where Petty plays, Fritsch may be played like a second tall, and then McGovern would be the natural matchup, but we don't want Gov playing that deep. Marchbank is another option who doesn't fit exactly. We are going to need a couple of options here. Meanwhile, Cincotta is the matchup for Pickett, but the coaches may trust in Williams for this job, if he is okay to play.

Offensively, May and Lever blunt our attack. Our games of late have been low scoring slogs. It's their gold standard and reliable twosome vs our gold standard but occasionally misfiring twosome. One has to drag his opponent out of the 50 and our other forwards have to become dangerous. If Martin comes in and hits the ground running, he is our most dangerous alternative option.

If we don't bring our pressure game at its best, we will lose our third game in a row, nothing surer.

Not a clue. I'm worried. I've lost a bit of confidence. The question is ... have the team? Have they steeled themselves for a knock down, drag 'em out, last man standing slugfest?

We match up against this team quite well. Who has the heart and desire?

Agree somewhat with this but think our biggest onfield issue exacerbating this is that our 22 is so out of balance.

We desperately need to swap a small forward for a midfielder.

We also lack run out of the backline. We don't have the cattle available for that to change. We had hoped Williams would provide it but he's clearly unable to do so while Saad is injured. As a result, let him get whatever injuries he's dealing with managed as he's incapable of contributing positively right now.

And if he can't get right then he's an expensive VFL player but expecting anything different out of him in the AFL team is begging for fool's gold.

Would prefer Carroll over Hollands. Hollands needs to rebuild his confidence. Give him a small block of VFL games where his aim is to win as much of the ball as possible.
 
If we can't sort out our forward 50 entries and keep bombing it long on Curnow and McKays head then May and Lever will eat us alive.

We desperately need to start changing angles and we need so much more from our small forwards.

Voss suggested that Williams wasn’t a hamstring but a tight glute and could be fine for next week.

He also hinted that Gov, Martin and Marchy are all close to returning. He said next week, but the changed it to the next couple of weeks.

Do we throw Martin straight back in? In my humble - yes. An underprepared Martin is better than whatever Orazio is delivering.

Anyway, hard to pick who is out and who is in until the Tuesday injury report.

Cowan has to stay. He will only get better with time at the level. Plays taller or smaller, competitive, good user, defence first.

All of our defenders make mistakes but he is one who plays the right way down back.

Time for Williams to move up the ground imo. Doubt it happens but he loses his head too often deep in defence.
 
Can anyone explain to me why Boyd doesn't take all our kick-ins?? About as rare as rocking horse crap for him to miss a target by foot, can kick it 60m with ease and is pin point at that too...

The amount of times he jogs by players on the mark and doesn't even suggest a handball receive is simply bizarre... If that was Mitch Duncan or one of the Daicos boys their teammates are giving it off every time. I just don't get it???

Martin like cuners just as likely to get injured playing VFL as AFL so if ready he plays. Same with Marchy.

I think Gov a definitely for next week.

Also barring a crisis in injuries so deep we are struggling to pick 23 fit players, no more Lewis Young this season.

If Curnow doesn’t start playing in front it will be a long night. Get in front and either take the mark, draw the free, or bring the ball to ground but don’t play behind and concede the easy mark and easy rebound. As good a player as he is, this aspect of his game stifles us badly. It has a ripple effect on the smalls not being able to get involved and the mids being caught out of position.

Once again though, it’s a game we should win and that should be the expectation injuries or not. The Dees don’t move the ball with the same potency as Collingwood but on the other hand they have a tougher inside game so it brings a different set of challenges.
 
Young and Williams have to be dropped otherwise I fear we are setting a bad precedent in terms of standards.

Gov obviously comes straight in for Young and Kemp comes in almost by default for Williams.

Fantasia is relegated to the sub unless Martin is miraculously available, but alas I don’t know how we get much better until Saad comes back.
 
If Young, Fantasia and Durdin survive the axe we've lost the plot.

Before we drop Williams, why not try him forward?

Defenders are getting scared so no run out of defence forces us down the wings.

In one way its dire, in another its over reaction as we have been in every game until the death.

Whichever view you have the games are stressful to watch. There are moments in games I now hate watching.
