VFL 2024 - Reserves Game Day discussion Rnds 2 - 21 (Merged threads)

Lose 83-95 - came back at them in the last with some early goals but couldn't reel them in on the day. Motlop finally turned up in the last quarter once moved into the midfield but stank for the first 3. No chance of a promotion this week. No-one really put their hand up, Carroll was I think clearly our best and has probably saved his spot in the side and possibly got himself off the sub bench. Binns had one of his worst games but was still amongst our best, Wilson showed AFL qualities and Durdin was reasonably busy but none of them cried out for a promotion. I think no unforced changes for the ones next week.

It's official, we are the worst side in the VFL.

Carroll - has got himself up to borderline AFL level quality. He's a good reserve.

Wilson - He has it, he will be fine.

Binns is a good VFL player, it remains unknown if he will make it at AFL level but at least he's showing what a potential AFL level player should be showing.

Corey Durdin is the shadow of the player who was looking like being a good AFL player back in 2022. 2022 Durdin was crumbing goals, doing the physical stuff up forward and finding the footy up the ground as well as spending time on the ball. Now he struggles to get a kick in the VFL. Playing unmotivated and/or overcoached non instinctive football.

Lewis Young is AFL backup and that's all he's going to be.

Marchbank is the shadow of a player who held up CHB at the end of last season and had many of us penciling him into that position for a good while. He's in terrible shape.

Moir has a really long way to go. We keep saying it. Think he needs to be worked a lot harder in these games and played in the middle more.

Mirkov. It should be rule number one to not draft players from a sport where they don't catch the ball. This was a recruiting howler. Would he get a game in the GV or O&M? Doubt it.

Lemmy. Don't think he will be AFL quality. Usually young players who have been on a list for a year or two and will make it show a bit at this level regardless of height or position. I'm not seeing it. Needs to click before season's end or he shouldn't be listed next season.

Motlop isn't even up to premier league standard at the moment. Someone who struggles to be fit did not need a long term injury. We have natural endurance players, they can come straight back, he's naturally poor in endurance so it's going to take him a while. Playing is a terrible side won't help, needs to get into the midfield a fair bit and run him pretty hard. I think he will struggle to get a game this year. He's in really bad shape. He's someone who needs to work hard on their fitness and can't afford long term injuries that keep him off the track too long.

Monahan is going to take a long long time. It's going to be tough making it in such a poor side. Probably needs to be playing the game at a lower level for a while.

It seems like out VFL guys are getting found out a bit but 5 or 6 coming back off the injury list would make a huge difference.

Who is the coach these days? Was it Luke Power?

Motlop and Durdin very conditional today, poor outings
No changes to the senior side after that
Agree. Not sure why Voss would want to make any changes based on the team performances and overall effort of the past two weeks.

Arrow, thoughts on the two year contract extension for Corey Durdin….good call or bad call by the club?

Corey Durdin getting a two or three year contract in 2022. Would not bat an eyelid. 2024, his game has gone backwards at a great rate of knots.

Not only has Durdin failed to reach the level he was looking like making, he's regressed.

He was crumbing goals, hitting bodies and playing hard footy, he was getting up the ground and getting hands on the ball and he was spending some time on the ball and finding it in there. He's not doing any of that.

No idea what is going on here. Just seems to have lost the aggression, confidence and natural instincts.

Should be given a run in the backline to tey and get his eye back in. Play him in the back pocket with the freedkm to roam a bit and see if he can get some ball

It's a well trodden path for guys who seem to have AFL attributes but who can't seem to get the ball on the big stage, and the reserves could use something down back anyway.

We can’t blame AFL injuries. If that was the case, how have the Tigers won five games.

We have a poor VFL list that can’t take the slack from AFL listed players who are off the pace. McMahon is decent. But the rest are average to terrible. (I’m including Cahill on this who’s not the player he was). Not a single one can kick. Prout, Stevens, Maher, Ramshaw are terrible at hitting targets.

He's like a different player

It's absolutely baffling. He was easily our best small forward a few years back, and quickly became one of my favourites.

Injuries and loss of form have probably have no doubt put a dent in his confidence, but he's a shadow of the player we saw back in 2022.

He's still young, so hopefully can dig his way out - because at his best he's a dangerous prospect. And so is Motlop, but is also hot and cold, and young. Looks miles off it right now, and of course was also dropped last year through lack of form. As was Owies.

It's easy for people to say that we have to go all in to bring in a gun small forward, but it aint always that easy. What if Austin has exhausted the market but has had no bites - which I'm sure he's doing, as are most other list managers.

question to the vfl watchers as im interstate and only seen the port melbourne game live this year . is Moirs time on ground still being limited by the coach"s ?
Hard to tell, he goes missing for long stretches and just seems way off fitness wise. Has a few good moments here and there but looks to lack a bit of hunger and determination.

Actually thought he started this week exceptionally well in those two aspects but faded back to his norm after half time.

I doubt he plays any seniors this year and would be surprised if he's any sort of regular in 2025. He's a real slow burn if anything imo.
