Training - December 1st. Friday.

Last day of training for week 1. It's been a big three sessions, and the boys really felt it this morning. They were put through the ringer physically for 2 hrs.
Whether it was running.. and there was a lot of running, at the start, then to finish.
There was sprints. There was laps around the oval, and for the new boys (Harry, TJ, Shulz + the train ons) they had to do a beep test, which was won by Jack Bytel. They all fared pretty well, but it's no surprise the two mids came 1st and 2nd in this test.

Player attendance

  • IQ - First session back

It was nice to see Darcy Cameron back out on the ground after his early exit from training on Wed. Unsure of what the issue was, but he ran laps most of the session, but at least it's something?

Last session before the rest of the squad are back on monday, and they were getting to work. There was much work on handballing in tight spaces amongst pressure.
There was stoppage work with mids.
A fight drill with the defenders, separated by smalls and talls. And the forwards as well, the same. Noble and Mitchell on separate sides of the ground -- Noble worked with the forwards and Mitchell, the defenders; they would kick the ball to a 1v1, where the players would have to contest the ball, and fight for it if it went to ground.

Once the players were exhausted from this drill, they weren't allowed to sit still, but rather were forced to run laps, then they came back and did the same drill again, and then ran again. This happened a few times until the whistle blew and they must have been relieved that it was over.

There was a bit of match sim, with the players they had. Apart from the two draftees; who have yet to progress to match sim. They were on the bikes which were placed to one side of the boundary near the bob rose stand.

All in all, it was a very good session. Andy Otten looked like he was running it with Wade (who did the fitness side of things) with the drills. Leppa seemed to sit back and watch on. I think skipworth may have been there as well, but from my view, Ottens seemed to be the most vocal.

Match sim was Steene v Begg with Allan. Mitchell. Nick v Jordy. Fin and Hustwaite.
frampton v Teakle.
Richards (playing defence) v carmy
IQ v Schultz
Ryan v Bytel
Noble v Harrison
Johnson v Sofonidis
Eyre v Reef
Dean didnt seem to be on anyone and Lippa was also in the middle.

Clearly with an uneven number of players, it wasn't your classic set up.

Lippa did very well playing midfield, looked to have confidence back. Was in and under packs, elite ball use in tight spaces. Hopefully this is things to come.

Reef and Ash both were very good today. Both quick off the mark, good hands and seem to be stronger this pre-season. Ash seemed to be playing higher up wit reef closer to goal.

Why aren't more people doing it. Krak came back good as gold. Maybe they don't have enough supplies of dead peoples tendons
Do they have to be dead? Does everyone need their tendons? I mean, surely there are plenty just going to waste.

I would love to take curnows tendons
He doesn't really need them. He'd be in trouble if you took the tendons from his flailing arms though.

Maybe retiring players could donate their tendons back to their club?

Love your work Jen. Where are they training atm?
Vic park.
Haven't you heard the outrage.. apparantely its why Mcstay did his knee lol

I don't use mine. I might post them to the club

Supply of donor tendons, cost and risk (albeit very low) of disease transmission.

No posts re Steene and a potential key forward gig?
Understandably raw, thou with McStay done, I’d have him earmarked for a CHF/FF role.
I’m not sure, is he not mobile enough?
Love AJ and Reefs potential, thou they’re not physically suited.
Frampton doesn’t have forward instincts and Krueger has reliability issues.
I’d be trying to fast track Oscar.
Cox, Cameron and Beggy to fill the ruck duties.

Ash is no CHF. He kicked his goals on the flanks.
FF is an option though.

Probably not such a bad thing though if we can get Checkers and AJ pulling defenders up towards the arc with them on the lead and leaving room for our mosquito fleet and resting ruck to do their thing ala our 2018 forward line setup.

As an aside, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Dan and the club decided to take that path if available given the circumstances.

It is probably a matter of personnel available, but the club policy seems to be away from the giant key forward that everyone seems to want. In years gone by, Ash Johnson would have been seen as the ideal size for a centre half forward. Much like Mihocek, but a little less bulky (although a very different playing style).

Players that are over 2 m tall and mobile with good skills are very rare. Then they have to be good footballers too. Hoping for one of these is probably not good strategic policy. Better to look in the more common height range for outstanding footballers. Johnson and Krueger fit this mold and it may show the direction in which the club is looking. The contrast between the two is between too little perceived intensity (not sure if that is real) and too much, with Krueger as suicidal as Murphy in his attack on the ball.

I think myself that they are on the right track in this, with perhaps a little more time on ground for the resting ruckman to provide a bit more height up forward. With this point of view, there doesn't seem a need for a panicky choice of a new forward just because he is tall.

Frampton was a good (inspired really) choice for the grand final, but I don't think anyone sees him as a regular forward. McInnes is another in the "quite tall" mold, but his future seems to be in the midfield long term. Perhaps a forward for this year though.

This is something to aspire to. I do recall everyone surprised he was ready. I saw him at the airport when off to the QF. I was heading there too.

I seem to recall his PRE surgery weights program, ( thought unconventional at the time) was suggested as making a major contribution to his fast recovery.
