Perhaps now we can just abandon the long kick up the line to a pack (when in that game mode) ,and come up with something a bit more interesting
If we go smaller in the forward line then lowering the eyes and hitting up targets might help stop the tall defenders like Harris Andrews and Weitering picking us off. Keeping it low and getting the ball along the ground would be perfect for guys like Bobby, Beau and Lachie Schultz you’d think

It's not about your level of excitement.
Fly and the coaching staff are just trialling him.
I remember you being an Oleg disliker as well.
Leave it up to fly and Co.
Why not none of us get excited or disappointed over anyone, close the thread and just leave everything up to Fly and his men, and we use the time wasted reading this thread in consuming a good or even not so good book, playing with the kiddies in the park or mindlessly watching a half baked series on Netflix? Only person who then needs to keep an eye on this thread is Dave so he can roll out a welcome thread when someone is finally selected. Sometimes I wonder why these forums and threads even exist!

I think Macrae has done more than enough at VFL level to give confidence he can step up if needed. He built strongly into this season following a disrupted preseason. His issue became a lack of opportunity, not preparedness. Maybe Adams departure changes that dynamic.
If he built strongly into the season, it wasn't so strong that he actually gained selection in any shape or form. He wasn't that good.

I'd definitely like to see much more creativity from kickouts.
We mostly seem to take a fairly conservative approach with long kicks to a pack, or short kicks then the long kick to the pack.
Not always possible, of course, but a bit more run & gun would suit our game style.

Jeez, TGG... cranky much?

I think it's more a case of other sides making us kick down the line as much as possible. We are pretty good at avoiding it, that's why we like fast footballers with decent endurance

That doesn’t work in high pressure games though.

Exactly. When Nick was taking the kick outs & creating that run on from the goal square, the oppo teams did everything to stop us from doing that.

More likely to work in high pressure games in fact imo. Get the ball to ground inside 50 and take marking interceptors out of the game. Then let your small forwards get to work and dominate. It’s no coincidence that it’s uncommon for talk forwards to kick big bags of goals in grand finals. Often small forwards and goal-kicking mids do the damage. High pressure with taps and knock-ons and ground ball gets that lead to goals are more the norm

Agreed. To quote the famous Bard from RICHARD III (with a degree of literary licence onserted), "A young & competent key forward; a young & competent key forward, a Kingdom for a young & competent key forward!" Perhaps we can scour with detailed precision the WAFL & SANFL & the VFL as well as other metropolitan & country leagues across Australia & find a veritable "diamond in the rough" in relation to our SSP list vacancies! A bloke about 194 to 200 cm in height who can take the occasional contested mark & can kick 2 to 3 goals a game, intermittently. Would that be too much to ask of club with all of our resources going forward? C'est la vie. Goodnight & good luck.

That requires a key forward. It’s the exact reason McStay was recruited in the first place.

There aren't any KF currently in the competition that take heaps of contested marks in pack situations. The best ones are leading forwards. In a fast moving game style like ours, we don't really need a KF who's a certain height. We have 2 really good lead up forwards in Johnson and Reef. I still think that this will play in our favour. We will be even more unpredictable and versatile next year, while we pick off all the other teams Key Forwards because they will be so predictable, a bit like this year.

I've been thinking more about this, and I think Frampton's short notice, low-possession, thankless performance in the Grand Final as a forward has convinced us all that he's not even remotely a candidate to try out for the role as a second, big, pack-crashing forward.

He was given less than a week's notice to have to come into a grand final side and told to play a defensive forward role on Harris Andrews - I don't think that's comprehensive proof that he can't be a candidate for this role.

I would give him the whole preseason to work on playing that role before I completely write off the idea that he could be a stopgap in that position.

Goals are great obviously but only one component of the role key forwards in our system are expected to perform.

Unfortunately neither Reef or Johnson at this stage really bring the table what McStay does. Johnson will still play a significant amount of games this year in his absence and Reef may well have his break through year - but for the latter, I strongly doubt it’ll be in McStay’s role.

He was used as a forward on a full time basis for a few rounds in June/July and really struggled, lacking in basic forward craft.

It’s not his position and I don’t reckon that’ll be changing.

We don’t need a key forward to take a heap of contested marks or be a certain height we just need a key forward to bring the ball to ground and keep the smalls in the game.

We’ve seen what our forward line looked like with Mihocek plus a leading forward or or Mihocek plus McStay and the latter looked much better.

Also not big on the idea of a versatile or unpredictable forwardline. The best forwardlines have players who specialise in their roles and are able to finish off goals that have mostly predictable build up.

2011 had a fairly predictable game plan of kick it Cloke yet we haven’t outscored that since.

The lack of notice most likely played in our favour. Andrews treated him like and actual threat of scoring a goal for for the first three quarters. That doesn’t happen in Frampton played as a forward for the whole final series.

I’m happy with the job he did on the day, but I hope the club keeps it to that day.

I think the club is though. It did win us a flag without McStay. The rest of our forward line are probably the best at specializing in their roles. Surely you've noticed that the club is deliberatly going in this direction, it's why we added Schultz.

If the club was going that direction they never would have recruited McStay in the first place. Even in the GF instead of going smaller and more unpredictable we went with Frampton to keep the structure the same and predictable to our players.

We added Schultz because he’s a quality player that will fit with our system. His recruitment isn’t indicative of a style change.
