Do some people really think that there are these undiscovered AFL level CHF's out there that we can just invite along to train?

They're the rarest commodities in the football world.

They're even more rare than a compliment from sideswipe.

I would have agreed wholeheartedly with this but then I remembered Brody Mihocek exists.

Seems unlikely we could get lucky to that extent again though.

agree on CH but why Bytel?
We need another inside mid as cover for Titch - adding Sullivan is bad news for either CH or Bytel, as we're only likely to take one of those three and I wouldn't be surprised if we drop either CH or Bytel off our SSP trial list by the Xmas cut-off.

I’m not Ginnivan’s biggest fan, but given he scored 40 goals in his second year contributing greatly to a top 4 team and now a premiership player not sure his selection deserves a whack.

I didnt say that the kid didnt have a talent. But there's a cost with trying to herd a pack of cats and try to fashion them into a cohesive unit to win a premiership. Some youngsters can share the vision of winning a premiership and others just wanna have fun. Some might say that de goey was in the ginnivan group, but I never thought that he stepped over the line of not being worth the trouble. Will Kelly seems to me to be another prime example of a kid who mightnt do anything wrong but has no clear vision of being an elite footballer. I'm not saying that all old footballers are good and all youngsters are bad, but I give a lot of credit to guys like hustwaite and lachie sullivan who continue to play and train after missing out on being drafted post high school. We only have to look at the recent finals series to know that when it comes to winning finals, determination becomes more important. I think Wright has brought an attitude that if a player doesnt show that he wants 100% to be there, then he'll think about a trade. I see it as a fantastic change in policy to the usual desperation that the club showed in the past with player retention. The grundy deal was a direct outcome of that.

I get the feeling that we’ll bring in the forwards soon. We can trial two more under the rules.

I’m glad we didn’t commit to Sofrinidis at the draft because our situation has changed.

We can’t bring in anymore than 6 until McStay is added to the inactive list, can we? I’d assume they’ll wait to assess his surgery before making that call if at all.

There's really something in finding players who have had to work so hard to get there. It's rough but they've got drive. If they wanted to give up, they would have.

I think the value of desire and self-motivation has been discounted too much in the past.

The other thing that I'd like to whinge about is the inability of recruiters to admit that they might have overlooked a player in a school boy draft. Things are changing in that area, but I still think there are players in various leagues who have been overlooked as schoolboys and never looked at again. I think recruiters are collectively up themselves in that area....As an example, we know a lot more about oleg markov in recent months and WE understand that it was very unlikely that he would produce his best footy with the mental state that he was in at gold coast. How many recruiters found out about his state of mind when he left gold coast? It was left to his old coach at richmond to reach out....

cant bring in more than 6 even if we had more spots available. Its 6 at one time no matter how many spots you have open

As rare as WalterBlaknWhte likes his porterhouse?

As rare as a sighting of JB1975 at a Liberal party fundraiser?

It's not about getting a ready made AFL calibre CHF to come in and play McStay's role to the exact same level immediately, it's about finding someone to provide cover at a position we were already thin at. The guy we're probably going to turn to to play his role was taken in the mid-season draft as a mature age player.

Harry Taylor was 21 when he was picked up, Ben Brown similar. Even the infamous Podsiadly was capable of producing when picked up at an older age.

You'll never know if you don't take a look at them.

His talk with Keegan is fascinating. It delves right into psychology at Richmond, leaving for Gold Coast and then not experiencing it there. Something in mental health for players.

Good point. He is an outstanding centre half forward and is still constantly underrated by his own fan base. I think in the past five years he is in the top three leading goalkickers. I don't think I dreamed that or pulled it from my backside. I did read it somewhere.

not limited to just mental health....the whole psych area. No wonder, Jacqui Louder has been spoken about so much..

Looking forward to seeing / hearing any updates on Charlie Dean as well. Has a clear run at it now, so am v keen to see if he's mixing it with the big boys, and is a genuine option for the backline this year.

Likewise Reef.... who could be a bit of a sleeper, if we're looking for ready made 6' 4" forward types, to help ease the load on Brodie & co

Charlie's looking really good from the footage I've seen on Jen2310 instagram stories from training.

I've got high hopes for Charlie & Reef too.

You didn’t dream it. I think the stat is that Checkers is the sixth highest goal scorer in the AFL since 2018. Or to be clearer, he’s no. 6 on the ladder of goals kicked since 2018.

It’s sad the AFL limits clubs to small psychological divisions. Players would be making much better choices off-field if supports (psychologists, etc) were increased.

Collingwood didn’t have many issues this year with De Goey, nothing really significant from anyone else bar one player. Not too sure what that player’s relationship with Jacqui was but he did make contradictory comments about not being able to be himself when she openly says they’ll accommodate all and the players agree.

Dean is another hungry player and playing to prove the doubters wrong. Really need to invent a term for it. Crocodiles? I don’t know but we have a few on our list.

He’s a very talented defender and I think he will feature. He can certainly step up to the level if his body can hold up.

Pre-season training: Week 2. Wednesday December 6th.

Victoria Park. 9am.

Another session done for the week, with one more to go to finish off the first 2 weeks of pre-season (one week remaining until xmas break)
I heard they'll go on a community camp, I imagine sometime after next friday's session.

Lachie Sullivan' first session during his trial run. spotting in the black, wearing Shulz #8. He is solid built, not overally tall, around Adams height or so. But moves well, and seems to apply pressure. Good things you want as a mid. Small sample of course, so we'll see how he goes for the rest of the training days.

Players on track:

Lippa
IQ
Mitchell
JDaicos
Shultz
Noble
Pendles
Harry

Train ons:
Sullivan (#8)

Sofonodis (#36 today)
Hustwaite
Teakle (#44)

* No Cox, and Jordy still. Cox would be back from the US by now, but they prob gives hin a couple days with jetlag. So maybe on Friday we'll see him him
And Jordy clearly still dealing with personal issue.

No Sidey and Howe, but those two includ pendles are free to come and go during december.

Maynard doing bike work and walking around with weights.
Jamie and DC did a few things around the goal line. Slowly building up their workload.

There was a bit of match play, but from general play or from D50, there was no structure really or centre bounce. Probably post xmas for that.
They also did some inside 50 work, tackling, handball drills, and some general skills drills basically.

Steene, Begg and Teakle did some ruck work with Fraser, the first real instance I've seen teakle actively engage with ruck work. There was a small time on monday, but more today. But otherwise, in match play, he was used up forward. Did take some marks though.

Oh. Lippa.
He is fine. Was not hampered by his ankle at all. Completed the whole session without session, so was very minor, nothing to worry about there.

Harry has a really nice kick on him, reads the ball well. I think he will settle in just fine. Adjusting to his role off half back pretty flawlessly.

There’s a cost with everything. Going for only the straight and narrow self motivated types limits the talent pool available.

My point was we were a serious team in spite of Ginnivan’s “cost”. We shouldn’t give up on talented players who don’t fit the exact robotic mould.

I am extremely happy we are looking at more mature agers though. But that should be at the expense of the Bianco’s not the Ginnivan’s.

I'm sure his body is fine. It's just that damn foot, lol. Fingers crossed it finally got sorted last year. He's been extremely dedicated in his rehab.
