Mate, we were just talking about you the other day. I was certain you’d posted here before, but maybe my memory is playing weird tricks on me.
Welcome mate, I hope you enjoy your time here. I have wonderful memories of fishing in Warburton with my Dad when he was still around, so I already like you by sheer association!Good evening all- this is my first post on Big Footy and I am delighted to be a part of such a respected community of posters.

In the past, I have done numerous pre-season updates on Nick's to keep fans of the Black-and-White in the loop about how our team is shaping up. More recently, I have not been able to grace training with my presence (health issues, predominantly) but I take great joy from getting down there when I can.
I am bullish about our prospects in 2024- I don't think we are 'defending' our flag rather, we have a new challenge for this group to stare down and give it our best collective efforts.
I think that 2024 will see a number of senior players truly challenged by 'Next-Gen' Magpies: Carmichael, Allan, Macrae, Begg, Harrison, McInnes, Johnson, and, perhaps: Steene, Dean, De Mattea. I can forsee a possibility that we could have a 2010 like season where Fraser, Medhurst, O'Bree and Lockyer were surpassed by others on the list who became Premiership players under Malthouse.
I do not, for one moment, believe that McRae, Leppitsch, Bolton et al will be swayed by sentimentality in pursuit of our 17th Flag.
To paraphrase a former Australian Prime Minister, for Collingwood to be the first Club to a 17th Flag would be, "The Sweetest Premiership of all..."
I wish all Big Footy posters a very enjoyable season and wish for them success (however that may look for them).

Maybe Fly is just ahead of the curve with this thinking. Also…. If Fly is also communicating clearly with the kids and explaining his long apprenticeship strategy, they might go with potential upside rather than worrying about getting cut from the list because they aren’t getting games.Just saying. To me that's the point.
Long VFL apprenticeships haven't really resulted in players in recent times, as Gone Critical is showing. But if they did in an era which isn't dominated by recent thinking on selection, development and list management long VFL apprenticeships may end up being effective if the recent thinking changes.
I’m just speculating because I don’t know how the current generation thinks, hell, who am I kidding, I struggle to understand the thought processes of people born this century. However, judging by the style that Fly uses, he does seem to understand how to connect with the different generations. The embodiment of the fictional Ted Lasso.Maybe Fly is just ahead of the curve with this thinking. Also…. If Fly is also communicating clearly with the kids and explaining his long apprenticeship strategy, they might go with potential upside rather than worrying about getting cut from the list because they aren’t getting games.Just saying.
Seriously, super-talented...Did Nick stuff a bounce up and then soccer it out of the air and hit a target? Hes not human.![]()
I think we do that for lots of players; having an injury, playing sore …. Cameron was certainly not as good when he came back but still played a role effectively. Funny how Gawn played a blinder for 3/4 in the final v “us” yet Cameron took a mark and kicked a goal for “us” coz Gawn didn’t follow him to our fwd line. Cameron took a few telling marks in that game and v GWS ( sorry I digressed) yep we do underestimate the impact of being sore or recovering from injury.I keep reading how Cameron is lighting up the park in the preseason. Good to hear and maybe we underestimated the lingering effect of his knee injury in the second half of the year. Will be interesting to see how the ruck combination goes over the course of the year especially with the potential emergence of begg .
My older brother is a retired English teacher and swore by that book. He always told me to use short sentences. Having said that let me say this; Men and Women of Australia"The elements of style" -by William Shrunk is a great guide to writing, especially is you're looking at a concise approach.

It looked like he'd lost all of his leap.I think we do that for lots of players; having an injury, playing sore …. I actually think Mitchell is the perfect example of his utility for getting opportunities this year. Mitchell is literally a one paced, unathletic, inside mid that they targeted. Coming off the injury he had and looking like he was potentially on the downside of his career while being an older player on a list that was already old, they still went after him. To me that says there is a clear cut spot for at least one inside ball winning mid specialist. Obviously if there is someone who has the potential to play that role being at the bottom of every pack and extracting at an elite level or close to, while also being a great outside player with athleticism, bring them on, but I'm not really seeing that player coming through to compete for that type of role right now. Probably because those players are incredibly rare. What’s that role at Collingwood in 2024? The reason I ask is that he’s uncontracted entering his 4th season on one of the most competitive lists in the league which makes it make or break at Collingwood, IMO. I look at our best mix and can pinpoint only Mitchell as that type and we have two train on players who have Macrae covered at the lower level. All of our recent draftees are athletically gifted in a way Macrae won’t ever be so they’ll be preferred for the flank roles we once weened our young mids on…
I think Apex36 makes a point that he’s receiving the pump up, but I’m not convinced it works at Collingwood for him. I hope he surprises me though.

We likely would not have won the GF without Titch though.I think I have been at pains to say the analysis cant be directed at individuals its just a general statement. It isnt directed at Finn. However the figures do say plenty of kids get games at strong clubs. Many variables involved
With Ollie Henry you would have to believe he would have played plenty of senior footy at Collingwood. His trajectory has been exactly what the really good kids do. He played 10 , 15 then 22 games. In 2023 he was 15th on the AFL goalkicking and kicked 41 goals. in 23 Brodie M was the 1st Collingwood to kick 40 goals in the H&A season since Trav in 2013.
Andrew, the boy-wonder from indoor cricket.Recent posts remind me of a very early Andrew Denton show.

Richards looked impressive in the practice match video a week ago. However, standing alone out in space, seemingly ignored if he had an opponent, allowed him to play an easy link role. One aspect of himself he couldn't disguise was his small stature. I want to see him battling an opponent for possession and winning his position.Q just confirmed on SEN AJ missed a few sessions due to covid
Fin AJ Richards and Reef were his improvers on track
There’s room for 2 and the second is Pendles. I am seeing someone fitting the description in italic, Demattia, who barring injury will exit 2024 ahead of Macrae, IMO. He’s the quickest player in the 1-4 year age demographic on our list over 10 metres, was a mid coming through the system and is clearly an asset on the outside. Also not to labour the point, but Bytel has shown to be a better inside ball winner than Macrae.I actually think Mitchell is the perfect example of his utility for getting opportunities this year. Floreat Pica.
Yeah, Cameron started clunking marks again in September when it mattered. Will be interesting to follow the Cox Cameron combo again this year….it was a constant topic of conversation as to whether the two ruck combo was the right fit and it turns out the answer was yes. It’s a new season now… the answer probably is still yes but they need to deliver. Maybe the question is can this combo get better? If they are both clunking marks to the best of their abilities and kicking goals, it could be one of the great ruck combos we’ve seen
The ruck combo has netted us a premiership so it’s already one of the great ruck combos to me.You had me until you went to a land of pixies and fairy dust with the last sentence.
Have they tho? Is several year older, and thier vfl stats last year where almost identical:but Bytel has shown to be a better inside ball winner than Macrae.
