Good evening all- this is my first post on Big Footy and I am delighted to be a part of such a respected community of posters.

My name is 'Warburton Lad' and I am a long time contributor to Nick's Collingwood Page.
I am a lifelong Collingwood Member and supporter.

In the past, I have done numerous pre-season updates on Nick's to keep fans of the Black-and-White in the loop about how our team is shaping up. More recently, I have not been able to grace training with my presence (health issues, predominantly) but I take great joy from getting down there when I can.

I am bullish about our prospects in 2024- I don't think we are 'defending' our flag rather, we have a new challenge for this group to stare down and give it our best collective efforts.

I think that 2024 will see a number of senior players truly challenged by 'Next-Gen' Magpies: Carmichael, Allan, Macrae, Begg, Harrison, McInnes, Johnson, and, perhaps: Steene, Dean, De Mattea. I can forsee a possibility that we could have a 2010 like season where Fraser, Medhurst, O'Bree and Lockyer were surpassed by others on the list who became Premiership players under Malthouse.

I do not, for one moment, believe that McRae, Leppitsch, Bolton et al will be swayed by sentimentality in pursuit of our 17th Flag.

To paraphrase a former Australian Prime Minister, for Collingwood to be the first Club to a 17th Flag would be, "The Sweetest Premiership of all..."

I wish all Big Footy posters a very enjoyable season and wish for them success (however that may look for them).

I promise to be a respectful and considered poster and will treat my fellow posters with courtesy and politeness at all times.

Floreat Pica.
You always were respectful on Nicks and the habits of a lifetime are hard to change.
Welcome to you,I remember your reports on Nick,s they were 1st rate go well mate.

I like Jen's straight to the point approach. As George Orwell said in his writing tips -'Never use a long word when a short one will do'. Also 'if it's possible to cut a word out then cut it out'. Keep it simple. We are not all Rhodes scholars.
That's true, I like Jen's style as well. But if I've got time, I don't mind track-watchers augmenting their reports with a bit of extra information so that they paint a bit of a word-picture. But of course, many people are time-poor, so it's a matter of finding the right balance.

I really think Annabel tries too hard and it smacks of showing off (but I still appreciate the time and effort taken in posting these reports, especially for ex-Melbournians living in heathen territory :))

Thank you Mr Hardas and others for the lovely sentiments expressed and welcome extended.
I cannot think of another season where there is such a 'buzz' around our prospects.

In my view, the best Collingwood sides I have witnessed are, in order: 1970, 2011, 2023 and 1972.
The sobering reality form that is that the Magpies only won one flag from those four years.

I once had a long chat with Mr Des Tuddenham and he was certain that if the Magpie lists in 1970 and 1972 had the fitness levels of the Richmond sides of that era, they may well have won Bobby Rose several flags.

For younger readers of Big Footy, at the end of 1971, Teddy went to Captain-Coach Essendon, in early 1972 our finest young player John Greening was knocked unconscious well off the ball by a St Kilda player and missed the remainder of the season and, a fine young Victorian from our recruiting zone had chosen to go to Norwood in the SANFL.

Imagine the Magpies in the 1972 finals with a half forward line of Greening, Carman and Tuddenham...??

Such is life.
The Lad! Welcome Sir. We have chatted at training before, and hope to bump into you again one day soon...

Looking forward to the full training report.
Might be a bit later, waiting on this mobile tyre service to bring and fit mum new tyres for her car. But I'll work on it.

I wasn't being critical of Annabel, certainly not as a writer, but rather stated that of all the reviewers, I probably like Jen's the most because the economy of words and a plethora of videos gives her training reports a picture book feel to me.

I don't think Annabel is not so much showing off as trying to set the training sessions within a context that includes specific description of weather and environmental details. She enjoys playing with words and takes pride in the quality of her prose. I feel compelled to read her reports in their entirety rather than skip to the bits in which I am most interested, such as match simulations. I am getting old and lazy, and like to take short cuts where I can.

I read all the reports to compare the observations on players, interested largely in the similarity and therefore accuracy of their observations.

I read and enjoy all of the reports also I think that way you get the biggest and the fairest idea about what is really going on at training.Being interstate I really appreciate all the reports from everyone.

You'd think they will announce the SSP's before this presentation/intraclub, so they can get their jumpers. So might find out Monday feb 12th.
The might need them all for the intraclub.

Select the 3 to fill the list. Grab some VFL top ups to supply anyone more needed.

The deadline is that sunday anyway.

TRAINING FRIDAY 2nd FEBRUARY :- A fairly cool start to training this morning. About 17° and a stiff breeze. Training got underway at about 9.30. No sign of Tom Mitchell today. Good to see Ash Johnson back after he missed a couple of seasons. Only players in rehab were Jakob Ryan and Josh Daicos. Bothe of them took part in most of the drills but sat out the match sims. Brody Mihocek was back in full training and looking really good. After a short warmup session the players took part in several sprints over 100m. The quickest in these were usually Isaac Quaynor, Harry Di Mattea and Beau McCreery. Following the sprints the players broke into 4 groups for the next drills. The focus was always fast play on footy mostly by hand then a long kick into the forward line. That was followed by a short match sim. There were some excellent chains of play by a lot of the players and good that they were from the younger players or fringe players. Darcy Cameron dominated the ruck and took some good marks around the ground too. Reef McInnes kicked a couple of goals after taking a couple of good marks. Fin Macrae was looking in good form too. Then followed a few more of the drills still with the focus always of play on fast footy. The players then left the ground for a while no doubt to get instructions for the full on match sim that was to follow. And what a match sim it was. Easily the best one of the pre-season. There was some absolutely brilliant passages of play and once again not just from the seasoned players but the younger and newer players as well. Reef McInnes took a couple of strong marks again for a couple of goals and then he made a couple of good leads for another 2goals. And not to be outdone Ash Johnson also took 2 terrific pack marks and slotted 2 goals. The way things are going I could see Reef and Ash playing in the same forward line. Fin Macrae got plenty of grabs too. Carmichael was a bull in the midfield and Beau McCreery played time in the midfield and the forward line and was awesome in both. He snapped a terrific goal from 40m back over his shoulder. Then Jordy DeGoey bulldozed his was through a pack for an awesome goal on the run from 45m and followed it up with a huge snap from near the boundary after a mark. Jordy is in for a BIG BIG season I think. Aiden Begg took some strong marks as well. He is really starting to hit his straps now. Lachie Sullivan who is trying out for a rookie spot always seemed to be where the ball was and was involved in some great passages of play that resulted in goals. But I thought the player of the game was Darcy Cameron who took some great marks around the ground, dominated the ruck contests and worked hard all around the ground. And a couple of times he was on his hands and knees knocking the ball out of packs to teammates. In my opinion Darcy Cameron is the most improved player in the squad this pre-season especially since the Christmas break. There were too many good players today to list here. They all played their role well. Things are really starting to click again at Pieland. I’m really looking forward to the practice games against North and the Tigers. The players apparently have a 4 day break now and return on Wednesday. Go Pies. 👍💪💪

I hope they do it this week - at least signing anyone they're committed to.

Reef was the most dominant forward in today's match sim. Would have kicked 5-6, maybe 7 goals. Took some nice marks and just his mere presence was hard for some of our defenders to contain.

Fin was absolute star. Was everywhere, totally brilliant display from him. Played inside and on the wing. He's taken his game to a whole new level this pre-season.

The problem with match sim is that those who played well, did so against our own. Any idea Jen2310 who was playing on Reef?
