I think that is a pretty good summation

Bigger than Murphy but if he got a game at afl level I think he would play that type of role in our team

I think that’s a fair summation that if he plays he’s taking Murphy’s current role at FB and allowing Murphy to play a different role in the back 6, either Howe’s role or allowing Moore some freedom to play Howe’s role.

Interesting that a lot of people have him pegged as a third tall or medium defender when he’s both taller and heavier than Murphy who is currently playing the bigger role. Could be a strength thing maybe but track watchers would know better on this.

Pre-season training: Feb 7th.

Yesterday's session was decent as it went for over 2hrs. They started coming out at 12ish, and probably started 12:15 or so.
Sidey was absent. Richards as well, I don't recall seeing him out there.

Beau did come out and warm up, but I heard he had a poke in the eye, he didn't return. I'm not sure when it happened, must have been early as I totally forgot he was even out there.

All the SSP's were there.
Eyre in #20
Teakle in #44
All the mids in #33 (some changed for match sim, we don't want to get confused lol)
Sofrondis in #40

Jakob Ryan is back in full training, as he completed the whole session.
Josh Daicos is at 95% as he did everything but match sim. He did running with Murphy at this point.
Murphy, for some reason they had him do some running for half the session.
Kreuger did a running session, then went inside.
McStay came out and did some agility work, which was nice to see. I don't know if this is normal or moving at a rapid pace, I've never paid much attention to previous ACL recoveries.

The session was focused on stoppage work, and moving the ball from stoppage to inside 50, and then moving from end to end.
Also some ground ball work, sprinting around cones during one of the drills. It was a taxing drill, non stop action.

Carmichael and Steene wore what we suggest is their new numbers, which they wore in the early few sessions of the pre-season but resisted since; as a change of numbers has yet to be announced.
This would be #12 for the former and #21 for the latter.

After some of the drills, they proceeded to do some match sim, which was used as a skinny area of the ground, with the goal posts sideways, and coned in a specific area you had to stay within the limits.

They split into three groups for this to occur, given it was done in smaller groups.
Blacks, Whites, Yellow vests. They rotated every few minutes. They were done after this, which was after 15 mins in total.

Only two more sessions until the intraclub next wed.

I was chatting to mitch cleary who I bumped into at vfl training, and he said he saw Fly having a good chat to Eyre during today's session.
Not sure what about though.
He was talking to Eyre toward the end of training. As most of the list left the field, McRae and Eyre wandered through the middle heading towards us.
McRae ran many of the drills yesterday and was especially verbal and congratulatory towards many players.
Later he joined Leppitsch up stairs as scaled-down match sim. took place. He was still barking orders from up there. He loves his players that's for sure, but he's brutal when necessary, as the fierce dressing down of McInnes demonstrated.

Must have been just before he was chatting to Leppa. I missed that.

The similarities start and end at ball use. It’s a make or break year for him considering it’s a contract year and he’s 4th in line at best. It’s a decent sign for the state of our list because I think he’s capable.

He was considered the best defender on the VFL at the time we picked him up so I hope he makes it

Media and photo day

Oscar's new number.

Oscar got promoted to the senior list? How did I miss that lol. The club must have a lot of faith in him if they’re willing to promote him so early (or they just wanted to get an extra SSP spot open)

Yeah, they sneakily did it and never announced it. But its mentioned in the AFL season guide under the rookie elevations. Promoted him ahead of Dean and Begg, and he's only been on the list 12 months.
But then again, they did give him a 2 year contract when we signed him.

Given the age of Howe, Murphy's concussion risk and Dean's injury history, I hope we take Sofronidis onto the list.

Feel like we need to really solidify our tall back depth

I disagree. Based on the track reports from almost all watchers it sounds like Sofronidis has been underwhelming. In any case, we have Frampton to bolster stocks down back, if need be.

It's interesting. Track watchers have said he has been virtually invisible over the preseason. Yet sombody on SEN last week was reporting how the club has been very happy with him and how seamlessly he had fit him to the game plan

Based on watching Jen's videos, Eyre can seem quite slow at times. Not sure if he is running out of gas when he looks very slow or if that is just how he is.

Thinking about the way that we play and our current defensive profile it seems as though pace is really one of the most important things in our back line. Moore, quaynor, Murphy, howe, noble, maynard, Markov are all quite fast. In fact I'm hard pressed to find a slow player in our backline.

With the way we defend with fullbacks pressing high up the ground and trying to disrupt plays before they even pass the halfway point, our defenders need pace in order to cover ground in the inevitable outcome of the ball getting over the top, which we saw many times last year.

We defend a lot whilst running backwards toward goal and also rushing opponents in the centre of the ground. I wonder if that will be a factor in Eyres selection. Ie. Not his skills or height, but his fit within our game style.

Also I am aware that he tests well for speed but the eye test doesn't follow that. Again maybe he is just gassed out in the vision that I have seen of him. Other track watchers would know better than I do.

Eyre is also a defender. And I think we'd all be shocked if he wasn't one of the ssp's selected.

He runs pretty well for his size. In the sprints he's quicker than Frampton. Murphy etc. He's usually middle of the pack. Not the quickest. Not the slowest. Has a good endurance base too. It's not an issue tbh
Covers the ground pretty well, which is something they like
You'd find its pretty rare to have 199cm key defenders with elite pace.

I don’t think he’s as quick as Moore (not many his height are) but I wouldn’t say his pace was an issue. Reads the play well and his kicking (length, accuracy, and penetration speed) more than offset that and are just as essential for our ball movement.

Yep I raised that, and git ignored. Mods at their best
After it was first mentioned, Ive tried to fix it. Tried to delete the posts with the image, but doesn't seem to change it; so I really have no clue.

I'm not really sure what everyone was expecting??
He's literally come from 3 leagues down on AFL.

If he was going to rock up at the premiership team and dominate pre-season....then i dare say he would have already been taken by another club in the draft/rookie draft.

Very much like Richards last year.
Massive leap.

I'm confident the club would be looking at the 'improvement' and not the output.

That said, is a 24 year old someone who you want on the list for purely a development year?

The question really is about whether you'd take him this year (knowing he won't play unless we get a massive amount of injuries).
Which you'd only do because you think the improvement in him this year will mean we don't get a chance at him next year.
