Crossley was probably the difference. And he is a slow lump of a man that is only good at ruck contests. But he dominated.

Poulter, Baker, Gardner, Scott very lucky to receive the contracts they did!
Don’t expect to see much of any of them in 2025.

Freijah a highlight for sure.

Words can’t express how much I want Werribee to win the flag.

That was the first full VFL game I’ve watched since I attended one in Melbourne a couple of years ago, but I’ve got 1 question.

Do the VFL umpires not want to take the next step up or something? Not saying it decided the game or anything like that, but half of their decisions I have absolutely no idea about. Watching AFL, you generally know. But it’s beyond a lottery watching that game. Early on Southport were holding well off the contest and there were zero calls, some of them outside of a congested contest and Stevie Wonder would have been able to see what was happening.

They also took 2 business days to call for a ball up when it was clearly a stoppage - doesn’t the AFL rules cascade down to lower leagues? My ****ing Sunday league club which would be the equivalent of division 30 plays to those rules with the stand rule & all.

But the main points from my POV:

  • Game was lost in the 2nd quarter, 3 goals each and Southport kicked into the wind.
  • Busslinger needs a full pre-season without injury, but needs to play AFL. I don’t think he’ll be a full back/stopper type, but definitely a 2nd KPD
  • Poulter has all of the tools except the one that’s in your head
  • Baker, Scott, Harmes - they are battlers, but shouldn’t be near the AFL side
  • Keath is cooked, Bedendo & Clarke just don’t have it unfortunately
  • Arty is worth perserving with I think. Kind of a tweener at the moment, but has assets worth refining to find a role
  • Garcia needs to polish up some things, but he’s better than VFL level. Just hope it’s with us
  • JJ should only be kept on if he plays for the minimum, if that was a mid-season game he wouldn’t get a call up, despite not being “bad”
  • The Lachsmith has some potential. 18 going on 35, although beaten he stood up and fought for the whole game, more than other rucks that coincidentally play for the Dogs right now. He can definitely put on more size and strength without losing mobility to get around
  • I kind of like McNeil now, wtf. Not best 22/23, but happy for him to come in if he’s performing at this level and someone in AFL isn’t
  • Last one, what’s happened with Bianco? Went from prospective mid-season draft to looking like he was lost on a VFL ground
Edit - forgot to talk about Crossley. Dominant ruck, but it shows what happens when you’ve got a capable ruck giving his mids first use of the ball. You’re generally going to win more than you lose when that happens.

I went along today. Nice old school footy feel at the Whitten Oval.

I stood right at the back EJ Whitten Stand.

Was waiting for my coffee when the hail came through.

Not our day and disappointing we couldn?t get it done at the end after that fight back in the last quarter.
