NSW player.

Able to be prelisted as CAT B if not selected in national draft

Bizarre.

He's from Glenroy (near Albury).

It's 200km closer to Melbourne than it is Sydney.

I would have assumed GWS get to have a crack given the work they put in the area but stinks that Sydney can pick him up.

Ah well good luck to the kid.

Has never been linked to Sydney Academy. How do they get auto access because of his address?

Because any player within NSW can be automatically listed if overlooked in national draft.

Ask AFL house about that one. Was not aware until this draft if I am honest

It's actually wild.

The suns traded in Petracca and JUH, then add two top 5 picks and 4 first round kids overall.

For all the crap people hang on geelong for trade and draft gifts the above is levels above any year we've had in the business. And Twomey somehow went with the biggest winner being west coast.

Yes, but they needed to trade Ainsworth and Flanders to make space. You can forget JUH as a plus column addition - he cost nothing, and for good reason. Plus, they've planned all of last year for this.

Still wouldn't say they won the draft period, even with 4 1st rounders

I'm sorry, but losing Ainsworth, Luko, and Flanders is not evening up the ledger to the point it's close at all. I can't see a team that is within earshot

the dumbest most overused question 'who do you model your game on?' asked to every draftee. They literally don't model their game on anyone but have to come up with a name just to satisfy the dumb adult questions. You think a player actually goes and changes the way they play in order to copy the way an afl player does it? yeah no. They all go out and play their natural game and it may be similar to how others play out of pure coincidence. It's such a dumb a lazy question.

They're just giving Shifter something to discuss when picked.

"Oh, I can't believe this kid lasted to pick 87. Many had him in the first round. Plays like a mix of Heeney/Bont/GAblett jr/Fyfe/Leigh Matthews. Astounding he lasted to this point an the club will be both amazed and ecstatic he made it to their pick."

I think that is the same mechanism that got us Cunningham. I think we took a kid out if GWS academy a few years back too... Reid... maybe?

There are QLD zone selections and NSW zone selections.

Basically if you don’t get drafted and aren’t part of either academy for what ever reason, you can still get preselected in the rookie draft as a state zone selection.

We have a couple on our list in Shadeu Brain and Bruce Reville.

It’s not about evening the ledger. It’s about leveraging what assets you have to get ahead of the competition.

Vic teams have for years had advantages that just don’t exist for other teams.

Jump on the West Coast board, they have a spreadsheet for how many kilometres each team flies for next season.

West Coast flies 55,000 more kilometres than Carlton next season, and plays 11 interstate games, compared to 5.

A West Coast assistant coach has said the amount of flying they do, means that Vic clubs train an extra day a week, compared to the WA teams.

Tell them to move to Ballarat simple

Yeah the distances are a baked in disadvantage though not sure what we would do about them specifically.

The things we're looking at here are off the charts though.

Really? There are 8 non Victorian teams. How about each Victorian team flies and plays each non Victorian team team away from home each year.

Or we could dissolve 4 of the Victorian teams, move a 5th to Tassie, and play a full home and away season.

TV rights deal is largely dependent on the competition being a national competition these days, and not the VFL.

Could add in a full reserves fixture as well.

You'd create a home ground advantage for the Vic clubs that we dont currently get doing that. Good idea 😂

We play at the MCG twice next season. I’d say the MCG tenants already have a home ground advantage. Not like we’d play every away game in Vic.
Youre not factoring in the Vic v Vic games where there isnt a HGA. We have HGA in 6 games only next year (2 of those opponents dont have to travel so really only 4 comparable to the interstate teams with 10 or 11). Half what the interstate teams get. Cut the number of Vic teams and that disadvantage will be reduced in exchange for taking some more flights.

Most "interstate" teams have to travel back from Vic or wherever the week they play a home game so this notion that they get an extra advantage not having to travel for home games just is not true

That makes no sense to me if they have never been a part of the club's academy.

Quick google...

10.4 in drafting rules, simple put, if a player is not in an academy, but is a resident of a northern state, then the club in that state may preselect them for rookie draft if the club and the player agrees.

Can only be done post PSD. Player can nominate not to go through it and ride out the rookie draft if they want to be selected by another club out of that state

You want to put North Saints match at optus every year? I'd think thet'd shoot 4 vic teams first. I'm not totally against the idea of streamlining the comp but it's not happening.

By my reckoning, these are the players not selected who were invited to the National Combine. Plus a few notable state invitees.

(AA) denotes they were in the U-18s Champs All Australian team.

NATIONAL COMBINE INVITES

Tairon Ah-Mu
Oskar Ainsworth
Sam Ainsworth (AA)
Thomas Burton
Noah Chamberlain
Oliver Greeves (AA)
Liam Hetherton
Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves
Louis Kellaway
Leon Kickett
Jesse Mellor (AA)
Taj Murray
Riley Onley
Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier
Fred Rodriguez (AA)
Isaac Waller
Wesley Walley

STATE COMBINE NOTABLES

Xavier Bamert
Harrison Bridge
Toby Whan
Rory Wright

Liking Blake Oudhorn Bennier (nafc ) or Louis Kellaway (sturt) from reviews on afl rookie central

Both inside mids with clean hands and feet

Bob compared with Nick Daicos and Zac Butters. ( that should be enough)

Louis not chosen father son (Duncan ) by Tiges as they have a plethora of young mids
