2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Now that Harry Boyd has been delisted after 1 x less then average AFL game and 12 x average VFL games, I am going to get on my 'soap box' and highlight I told you so. Its now been proven to be a very poor list management decision at the time, yet the rubbish I copped for having a contrary opinion was interesting. He was never going to be an upgrade on Heath or other rucking options we had on the list.

Now to re-consider what my thinking was at the time as a result of the strength of last years draft.

As a result of jamming Boyd into our last list spot we over looked Lennox Hofmann (NGA medium tall defender), Zak Johnson (midfielder), Cody Anderson (midfielder), Luke Kennedy (midfielder) at the draft.

Then re-added a crippled Crouch at the rookie draft and overlooked other SSP options. Crouch retires after attempting a come back, when that decision should have been made for him much earlier.

Then overlooked this years mid season draft completely where there were players we should have looked at like Tom McCarthy (back flanker ball magnet), Harrison Ramm (200cm key defender), Archer May (198cm tall forward & Ex Dragon player), Liam McMahon (198cm tall forward) or even relisted Oscar Adams we were so short on tall defenders.

Not all the players listed above will have long AFL career but the majority will play a lot more games than Boyd was ever going to, some might even become 100-150 game players.
The fact that you are crowing shows that you still have no idea what the point in getting Boyd was

He was a backup - he was to provide cover in case Row got injured. Row did not get injured so Boyd didn't end up playing. Simple

Him playing in the VFL also allowed both Heath/Dodson to develop their forward craft - I dare say if Boyd wasn't there to free them up to play forward then neither Heath/Dodson would've competed as well as they did in their AFL games as full forwards

No one here argued that he was going to be on the list for longer than a year - everyone except you understood the purpose of Boyd

And on Crouch - we gave him the agency to make his OWN decision on whether he was done or not - hence the indecision at the time. He'd been a great servant for us and we wanted to let him go out on his own terms. So you are pretty much criticising the club's goodwill. Good on you

And on the draft, the suggestion of Cody Anderson just further shows how clueless you are - he was a Hawks NGA 😂 😂 😂

Hofmann and Kennedy have shown nothing to indicate we made a mistake passing on them. Johnson has been good but we already have a plethora of half backs - can't have them all. Despite Essendon's injury list he's been playing VFL the past few weeks. We wouldn't have been able to get them anyway because they were national draft picks - Boyd was a rookie. We'd had to have used a rookie draft pick

Tom McCarthy went pick 1 in the MSD draft, we had pick 4 or 5. We were no chance of getting him so don't even bother adding him to try and frame your argument. Archer May is the only player I agree with but Keeler's development makes me regret it less

McLennan and Boyd were rookie listed

only Webster and Cordy off the primary list so far

if we are to bring in 3 and draft the mandatory 3... seems like 4 of Byrnes/Heath/Jones/Arie/Carroll will go (unless we trade Windy Marshall and/or Steele)

might need to promote Caminiti as well? has had 3 years on the rookie list
I cant get any clarity on this because the AFL are run by bufoons but it looks like there is no minimum amount of rookies anymore so theoretically everyone on the "rookie list" can just be moved to the main list with no issue meaning (outside of the category B ones) that any delistings we do will free up main list spots regardless.

I like that we are having a crack
It feels a bit like 2 years or bust…
But even with names recruits coming …we are further than 2 years away ….
Aleer TDK Ryan aren’t pushing us into flag contention ….i know our kids will develop …so will other sides ….
Nervous we’ve gone hard early OR
Is 2 years to get us into contention …Boss steps out then Enright has enough for a sustained tilt ??
High risk
I think a poor standard draft has contributed to this approach.
Our 1st round pick and Kye Fincher look like our main priorities.

Also St Kilda was after Soldo, but that fell over late when he failed his medical with us.

So very late in the piece we needed a Tom Campbell (back up ruck) replacement and the field of available rucks was then very thin with all candidates having question marks about them.

Back on Soldo. Chasing him one would presume meant that the Club was going to play a Soldo/Marshall Dual Ruck this year, with presumably Marshall spending a lot of time forward.

So not out of line with a TDK/Marshall set up in 2026.

Did the Dees think that Kalani White was going to soak up their first round pick this year?
I think last years draft was pretty strong in mid to the back end.

I wanted Shanahan, but he was gone, before essendons next pick.
Angus Clarke, Zak Johnson look like they are going to be serious players for Essendon.

Saints trade future second for Boxshall was good for saints and probably goes to match Sweid (NGA) for Essendon win-win.
I think they backed themselves. And then perhaps were so enamoured with what they could get with the Essendon pick that they couldn’t drag themselves away.

But you’re right - the “super drafts” are often super because of that depth. There are going to be serious players beyond the top 20 this year and we have already seen some great signs from those that you’ve mentioned and others.

And to me, this year’s draft looks like an abomination. So perhaps what the Dees gave away - and it looks insane on paper - may not be so bad.

Gettable

- running with our interest in JSOS. Think the dogs are still infront. We haven’t met with him but they speculate we won’t need to.

Kinda opened the door to not getting Aleer if we get JSOS.
Would make sense if we want Flanders. JSOS saves us a pick that we would needed for Aleer. Use that picks and whatever else we need for Flanders.
I assume if we get him any hypothetical interest in McKenzie is just that.

I’m interested to see what they do here. Money sounds similar for both.

I think we all assumed it’s both. But I think JSOS is better than Aleer.

Plus Voss would be a FS Rookie, and so our first Rookie pick would be used for Campigli
I think the FS boat has sailed. A draft watcher (not Bf) had confirmed IIRC. It’s either at first eligible draft or after nomination and presumably he nominated for his 18yo draft.

Must admit, I’m absolutely furious SOS hasn’t met with Silvagni yet. What’s he waiting for?

You’d think he’d even offer to do a training pick up or drop off just to get 5 mins in the car to see if his personality aligns. What if JSOS’s parents aren’t the right fit?

Does he make his bed anymore? Is he on board with the correct Dim Sim brand? Ffs, these are crucial questions. I’m starting to doubt SOS even knows how to use his Outlook calendar.

Of course you were right. He was a state league ruckman still available in December. It's like saying water is wet.

It would be more of a shock if the back-up ruck wasn't crap. It's why he was a back-up to begin with. No one has a good back up ruck because some clubs dont even have a good starting one.
