2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

This is the thing with trading Marshall and something the AFL surely needs to look at - if a player agrees to frontloading a contract they really shouldn't be able to get out of it later to go and sign a more lucrative one. It's a loophole in the system, and another that is designed to screw over the worse clubs, as they are the ones who are likely to be frontloading contracts in the first place.

If contracted players are traded, they should be traded WITH their contracts upheld (like the NBA) and it actually becomes a part of the whole trade valuation. You could still have a buyout clause or something similar.

If Marshall was frontloaded and is being paid unders now it would increase value as an asset greatly, which means we'd still see the benefit to frontloading him (just not the one we envisioned).
Nobody has to trade them and the clubs can ask for contributions from the club the player is being traded to.

So they expected him to accept it though, considering Hawthorn offered less, it wouldn't have helped.
We either retained Battle or get the compo from what Hawks offered.
Nope. Think of it as a vendor bid. It then formed part of the "herbs and spices" the AFL used to determine the compo. All part of the posturing my friend.

Completely forgot about this. I’d like to see us give him a chance, which seems impossible if he’ll be recovering from surgery during the pre-season period.

I’d also like to go into next year with a list spot or two open for the mid season draft. We missed out not being involved with that this year

Getting both of Aleer & JSOS is abit baffling
Unless they see JSOS as the swingman & play him forward more?
I've always had the idea that the best defence is one that can control the air, forcing the oppo to run the ball which can be corralled and stifled. I reckon with Wilkie, Jsos, Tauru and Aleer we'll have the skys well covered whilst Hastie is no slouch in that department either.
Add Sincs for run, Stocks for some grunt and there's your group. Having Howard around puts selection pressure on too.

Based on the accepted contract, therefore based on Hawks offer. Nothing to do with anything other offers. Could so easily be manipulated.
Really the stuff some of you come out with. Wasn't an ambitious claim FFS.

So JSOS says he is leaving Carlton, so they offer 1.2 million a year, knowing he won take it, to get a frdp. The stuff you people come out with 🙄

Sorry if I missed it ... but did Caroline Wilsin report that we have only spent 83% of our Salary Cap this year which incl. Billings & Crouch money?
Yep, and then (I infer) we topped up to the minimum 95% by distributing bonus cash to Sincs, Wilkie and some others (per RtB's comment about taking care of them earlier in the year before the NAS / TDK hoopla).

Ha ha, the stuff you come out with. Of course the contract offered by the incumbent club is PART of.the herbs and spices.

If Carlton offered $1.2m to JSOS the n he could just accept it. Terrible analogy by you. No rigour at all.

In fact, the opposite is true, Carlton could genuinely offer $1.2m but JSOS leaves to accept $250k and then by your logic, Carlton would get no compo.

No one knows the compo formula, many factors are considered.

Come on man.

Why don't we make a submission to the AFL for them to make a contracted Cam McKenzie an unrestricted free agent to make up for the changes in the rules. That way Hawks get compensation and we get our NGA player?

Stupid idea deservedly being laughed at? Yeah, same as the requests from WC for a PP and Port/Carlton to delay changes to rules.

Bassat should just take the piss to point out how ridiculous this all is.

So cause umpires can't determine player intent we get rid of throw ins
Coz the stupid league morons brought in the intent rule in the first place. Now teams will be shy of the boundaries and it'll congest the game more so they'll bring in more rules to speed it up and more umpires to officiate more tules to slow it down and add more confusion.

Do any other clubs post like we do on these year after year. I feel whenever I'm reading the other clubs boards who are involved in our trades they all seem to move at 10% the pace.
I've noticed the same. I think probably if you win a premiership within living memory it takes the edge off of trade season..

I think any rule where the umpire has to determine “intent” is fundamentally wrong for the sport. That’s why they’re so bad at umpiring the sport, they’re going by intent and feel - instead of having real rules to follow
1000x this.
Far too much left to personal interpretation.
Simplify the rules.
And for heavens sake get rid of the 50m penalty when the defender puts so much as a toenail over the mark.

It’s very exciting because this is the time of year where we do our best work.
