2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Regarding the speculation of Jack steel leaving the club. Numerous times I've heard Ross the Boss say Chris Scott is the best coach. In Geelong's last game he used two taggers which which of course ties into Ross's defensive mindset. Jack Steel has played shut down roles so along with Windhagger we have our duo. Of course culturally steele's impact can't be underestimated.

I reckon that Essendon game was when the hotdog stand caught on fire at Moorabbin and the end Essendon were kicking to was clouded in smoke as we banged on 8 or 9 goals in the last quarter to almost win the game
Yes that last quarter surge was amazing.

The stand must have been on the other side of the ground....or I was just too busy watching the football ;)

There is no actual noise from any media or ITK about this actually being a chance? Is this just some hypothetical from BigFooty posters? Or is there actual noise about this? Surely not.
JUH is too hooked with the criminal element to go near.

Besides we have Keeler to develop as an extra tall mobile forward already.

Our Team will only become successful by uniting with commitment and team unity. Nas has just given us a huge lift in this. We need to keep this momentum going now.

JUH could break that apart.

It's not often that there is 3 champions in the same team. But they'd al belong to the teams that won 3-4 flags.

Voss Black Aker
GAJ Bartel (take your pick on the 3rd)
Dusty Jroo Cotch
Hodge Mitchell Franklin

Cox Judd Cousins absolutely should have won more than 1 flag together.

Roo BJ Lenny wouldn't have been out of place.

Interesting thought.
It was earlier than that back in the Wayne Johnson days from memory.

You could really collect talent back then and Carlton did.

I'm open to trading Marshall, but Geelongs first doesn't tempt me at all.

If we're going all out in the next 2 years, we should be moving picks to secure guys like Flanders, not gun players.

Marshall is a gun player that addresses Geelongs biggest list weakness and is on a team friendly contract.

If Marshall is happy either way, I'd be asking for SDK or two first round picks. I wouldn't be settling for a pick that will fall back to the mid 20s.

If Marshall really wants out, its different and we take what we can get from what is hopefully a list of suitors.

I'd definitely rather keep Marshall than take 25 to the draft and I reckon we can get all our targets with what we've got.
Ask for SDK and a first or second round pick so negotiating down is just SDK.

Chuck him at FB, move Howard to CHB (his more natural role I feel) with Caminiti his replacement in time, Tauru CHF. JSOS takes Jimmy’s spot.

Steele stays for culture and if the removal of captain plus a decent preseason sees him rejuvenated. Or he can go to Hawthorn for Mackenzie if they fail getting Merrett.

Our first round pick to get Flanders and change which is then used for Aleer.

I keep hearing we met with Merrett yesterday, it’s silly season and football finals are on but it’s doing the rounds.
We had a big crack at him last year so a lot of groundwork has probably been done.

But all of the chatter is that Mitchell has won him over at Hawthorn.

Mrs Mitchell up to her old tricks again 🤔

My biggest concern with Merrett, he’ll cost two FRP and how many years of good service will we get from him. Perhaps 2 or 3 years…. I’m not sure it’s worth the draft value?

I remember talking to a Saints fan about 20 years ago. He was 95 and said StKilda's problem was that they'd always had champion players but never had a champion team. The top three are important but it's just as important they have the support underneath them.
Quality of the bottom 6 makes a difference too.

dont recall the hotdog stand, but i guess that would have been the game,as we didnt do that often against them,i think we closed to within a goal from way way back, then i guess smith made a blew and they steadied, because i remember reading about the altercation with a fan

essendon game i cant find, but here is last qtr of fitzroy game,17yo me was at other end of ground when conlan had that snap, every week on the sports highlights he was kicking those

Blows the mind away to think how the team remained competitive and gave spirited performances.
1983 was the nadir?
1984 Mini false dawn. (7 wins?)
1985 Season up until this game was horrendous. - 3 x 100 pointPLUS losses to ‘kick off’ the season. (Including kicking 2.17 against Carlton) And a routine loss to North. Yet, look at them! Still cracking in.

What a time.
Stalwarts like Burns and a young Plugger and just before we had that team of young stars and all those ex-Carlton players.

Has anyone received actual confirmation of whether we can nominate Jackson Voss as a father son selection?

I was just wondering because if so, our 3 mandatory draft picks could be Voss, Fincher and Caminiti...
There's no way we'd be able to. He's been in the system for years. He'd likely be a rookie selection of we are keen on him.

Many years ago we smacked Carlton who were premiership favourites.

David Parkin was asked on wide world of sports what happened. He put it down to 3 missing players, the incredulous host asked if 3 players were the difference between top and bottom teams.

Parkin responded with yes 3 champions.

I’ve never forgotten it and over the years I’ve concluded he was at least 90% correct. Pick any three players you like and add them to any team and it’s transformative. Try the Bont, Daicos and Callahan or Gawn the Bont and Diacos anyway I’m sure everyone will have a combination but add any three you like to us and we absolutely play finals.

We haven’t recruited at that level but our list looks way better and our depth is building, injury free we will play finals next year.

Pretty easy to see us having three stars next year with Nas banked as one. Then you just need King to play a season where he scores as many goals as his twin and Max Hall to have a 10% to 20% improvement and he's probably a true A grader etc.

If from Windhager, Owens, Phillipou, Wilson, Keeler, Garcia, Travaglia, Tauru etc we get a step up and improvement to guys like Dodson, Hammer, Hastie, Boxshall etc we are starting to look a lot better all of a sudden.

Sinclair, Wilkie, Macrae already very high level and just need to go around at the same level. TDK and JSOS walk in as a very good players too.

I actually think SOS and Gubby have been planning this off-season for a while, maybe for a year or so, therefore the feelers and negotiation with the player and maybe even the club has been had already, not confirmed but so far from the TDK, Aleer, Ryan news (all was reported months ago, when there's flame there is fire), I'm quitely confident that we are going to land Flanders, and maybe Mackenzie as well although I think Mackenzie might depend on if Steele moves. This is going to be one of the most exciting off seasons ever, comparable to the one that we landed Gehrig, Hammil, Lawrence, Capuano and drafted Riewoldt and Kozi. Exciting times ahead!!!

I think we probably saw what the Hawks and Crows had done loading up and went chasing our own ready made talent.

We were heavily into TDK two years ago. When he decided to stay I've got no doubt we told him we'd be back.
When Ross came back he talked about our salary cap being the same as the cats and talked about getting it in order.
They said we'd hit the draft for four years knowing it would make us younger and have more players getting paid less, leading us to the exact position we are now in.
The media and opposition supporters might talk about being desperate and looking for short term results but this has definitely been planned for multiple years.

Same with Flanders.

Carlton have the most A grade talent according to Draftguru. It ends up costing a fortune to hold on to them all too. Means you can't fill the bottom of your list up and have to have a bunch of below average talent at the bottom. Probably us in 2009 too.

If he's on barely any money you'd think that we'd be smart to hold on to him.
