2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

So if Geelong don’t get Marshall, have they dogged him?
If Geelong have pursued him for 2 years, offered him a hugely significant pay upgrade, had him leave himself vulnerable without a contract with 5 days left to find a new home and have just flat out withdrawn all interest in him, then yes.

If they're unable to satisfy the club he is contracted to, it is a little different.

Guys, this is really straight forward. You don't have to defend everything your footy club does. They're not perfect, but trying to blame GWS, celebrate this as being ruthless or whatever post-hoc rationalisation you want to try and imply is just embarrassing. It makes us seem like a bunch of mindless cult followers unable to think for ourselves.

We dogged Aleer, life goes on. We just have to hope this doesn't come back to bite us next time we approach another player or when Tauru is looking to re-sign.

Eek, that makes it worse. Anyone can rustle that up for a player they have targeted.

Something has happened. The announcement from the media (have we said anything) is way too hard and fast and doesn’t sound like a ploy to me.

Maybe someone had effed up their Excel formulae? “Yeah, we have $6m to spend, let’s go nuts”. “Oh wait, sir. Shit, how do I say this. It’s $60k left not $6m. That’s what we have left for Flanders. And some back pay for Nas. And looks like ****ing Wilkie will have to join the Dogs too”.
How does it make it worse?

If you don’t have a player to trade to gain a second rounder or a club who needs thirds/fourths to match bids - how are they easy to accumulate?

So Cats are saying they are walking away from Marshall?

What you are gonna not fix your ruck problem? Not buying it Cats🙄
Shame on them.
Haven’t they been “wining and dining him” for two years - like we supposedly did with Aleer?
Didn’t they get him to nominate them?
Will they come out and say that Marshall is “shattered”?

I think everyone has acknowledged this is a shitty situation for Aleer. But acknowledging that doesnt mean there isnt a curiosity about how two parties tank a deal in such a short amount of time.

And until this news was reported, I dont think any media outlet was expecting it to be an F2 to get the deal down. Twomney was talking a late pick or PSD. So while you seem to rate him extremely highly based off your posting today, you are also likely in the minority with that opinion.
Certainly an F2 seems high but GWS asking for that with a week to go and us just walking away…

We could claim the deal couldnt get done if we kept negotiating until the end of the trade period but 7 days to go… hard to argue we tried

by my count, primary list spot changes look like this

inout
TDKWebster
SilvagniCordy
FlandersHeath
RyanJones (OOC)
ND1Schoenmaker (OOC)
ND2 (Fincher?)Byrnes (OOC)
ND3 (Caminiti upgrade)Steele / Marshall / Butler / ...?

even without Aleer we still need to lose a contracted player to make it work

sounds like Steele is pretty adamant he wants to stay (as is his right) & has no suitors (yet). Butler to GC has only been mentioned on here as far as I'm aware

which leaves Marshall. knocking back Aleer was a strong signal we may actually intend to retain him, which was a very dubious proposition if Aleer was also to take up a spot

the Cats responded by leaking they have offered 3 firsts for Curnow and announced the re-signing of Stanley. which doesn't materially change anything, but signals they have also moved on and are not going to improve their offer

feels like everyone is playing games the moment & Aleer is a very unfortunate casualty

the pragmatic part of me thinks we'll flick Butler up to GC for a token future pick and that will be that

the chaotic part is wondering why we haven't announced Wilkie's two-year extension yet?

Geelong have pursued Marshall for 2 years.
He has requested a trade because of them.

Yes he would be getting a pay rise considering he has been significantly forward paid on his current deal

So if we ask for Geelongs 25+26 first rounders for Marshall and a 27 f2 and Geelong walk away because of cost. Have they dogged him?

Ultimately you are reacting far to much to partial information

Yeah seems like an excuse.

Which begs the question what has changed?

Geelong just re-signed Stanley. Sounds like they've given up on Marshall. Doubt we get SDK either. Anyway, I'm happy to keep Marshall

Marshall staying and no aleer on 700k x 4 is an outstanding result.

Yes it's messy and some players and managers will be a bit gun shy of committing to us in the future.

But we are shooting our shot.

If we start making top 4- players will want to come play for us irrespective of that one time we screwed over leek aleer in 2025.

Bartel saying the Giants wanted an F2. We said fine but we want X pick/s back.

They said no and we pulled The offer.

If I see another dickhead saying we should have offered more because of the contract value I'm going to lose it. Post new CBA the two issues are totally divorced from one another and managing the cap/floor has nothing to do with what players are valued pickwise. Genuinely zero IQ stuff from so many out there.
Flashbacks to when Nas' $2 million contract was only worth 2x 1st round DPs cause that's all the SA clubs had

McLennan also delisted

It may all make sense once the trade period is done.

Maybe a big fish has said yes to coming and we have to drop Aleer for that reason suddenly ? 😍

This seems true but walking with a week to go is petulant

Was disappointed in our future staffer when he said it must be due to salary cap
