2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

Not sure about the first bit. The press release is scorched earth. I’d be stunned if Aleer had any interest coming back now
As I said earlier.

We have heard the Giants end.
Let’s wait for our club to talk for themselves tomorrow

I’m not sure what we could possibly say to salvage the situation tbh. Best case is we say they wanted too much in which case the point remains, there’s a week to go.

Cats have basically done the exact same thing (assuming sdk isn't traded) and there hasn't been a word about it.
Couldn't give a stuff what others think. Great move by the club. Things change and I for one am stoked we didn't continue with him, waste a pick and cash when he isnt needed just to 'save face'.
Clubs need more power over players and this is a step in the right direction.
I feel for Aleer but I agree. He wasn't a crucial need and therefore not worth over spending on. Some other points:

Firstly, players make promises to clubs all the time, only to pull out last minute (Hello Caldwell).

Secondly, we seem to be the only club the media consistently pressures to take unders, or offer overs all the time.

Thirdly, why is there not the same vitriol for Melbourne pulling out of Derksen, who they've been chasing for 2 years?

Bartel saying the Giants wanted an F2. We said fine but we want X pick/s back.

They said no and we pulled The offer.

Lol if Bartel is on the money that makes it even worse.

We threw it all away over a f3 or f4? 🤣

Maybe this is all just a misunderstanding, maybe St Kilda said we're done for the day, GWS misunderstood and leaked to the media and then Aleers manager has gone off tap based off of a report.

The initial report was we’d walked.

Aleers management effectively confirmed it.
But the manager said we haven’t told Aleer…

My completely unfounded working theory is that SOS/Gubby played hard ball and gave an ultimatum, GWS declined and spread the “walking away” story.

If we did pull the pin, I would expect SOS/Gubby would’ve had the decency to at least call Aleer first. If not, it’s pretty bloody ordinary

So when the Cats can’t get Roma, who they got to nominate them, because they have now promised three first rounders, have they also f…..ed him around?

Because I’ll guarantee you one thing, the Cats will not come under nearly the amount of scrutiny we have been over the past three hours or so,

Fact is, if the players can renege on their actual signed contract, clubs can renege on something that wasn’t even formalised yet.
Where is the Sam Mitchell hate who has actually destroyed a captains career?!

800k was reported by the media nuffies, hence the story about Wilkie got upset because Aleer is paid as much as him. So really take everything we hear with a grain of salt. Journals are there to stir $hit up so they get more followers/clicks.
Reported doesn’t really stand for much. Reputable reporters corrected it several weeks ago to be $600k with performance triggers to $700k.

It’s also only one side of the story.

There is still ours and still the truth to the come out
I’ve only vaguely followed this. Have we spoken at all? Or just these?

  • GWS guy saying they were asking for a second rounder
  • Aleer’s manager having his rant
  • media reporting the story

Suspect if there’s no comms from the club by midday then we’re working on something else.
I reckon our best option would be to lay low on it either way tbh.

Agreed, it would be very ordinary

No one has reported a single word from our end.

Didn’t we bail on Caldwell when crouch we gonna be cheaper?
