2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

So in all of our discussions with Aleer, his management and GWS do people seriously believe that the trade pick value we were prepared to cough up was never discussed?

Do people think Aleer's manager said it was OK to nominate us without knowing what we were prepared to offer GWS?

Seems a bit like everyone agreeing to buy a house for $1M but when you go to sign the contract the agent has upped the price to $1.2M

The bed wetters are out in force tonight. I hope you are all equally appalled for every player that doesn’t get where they nominated. I suppose most don’t get to find out until the trade period expires, rather than have a week to sort something else out. Of course it may still happen, via PSD, via new picks coming to pass or, via GWS reducing their ask.

Sure I feel sorry for the bloke, a bit, but the desperation to blame ourselves is soooo strong it is, quite frankly, disappointing given all we have achieved so far.

So when the Cats can’t get Roma, who they got to nominate them, because they have now promised three first rounders, have they also f…..ed him around?

Because I’ll guarantee you one thing, the Cats will not come under nearly the amount of scrutiny we have been over the past three hours or so,

Fact is, if the players can renege on their actual signed contract, clubs can renege on something that wasn’t even formalised yet.
I’m sure our esteemed media is considering all possibilities in regards to Leek and other non proceeding trades.

Would take him or Aleer?

Take off your blinkers, not everything our club does is perfect.

This isn't some unforgivable crime or anything, it's just a dog act, plain and simple.

Anyone defending it is doing so because blind loyalty trumps reason for some.

A future second round pick is stuff all, GWS aren't being unreasonable, especially when there's 5 days remaining to negotiate.
It's hard to defend the indefensible..hopefully we get some clarity from our club

I think it’s quite as simple as we were prepared to overpay a pretty ordinary player we just weren’t prepared to pay overs for that player. If anything Aleer should be dirty in the Giants.

No one has reported a single word from our end.
The fact we havent even spoken to Leek on the matter reads to me as if we left the door ajar for some negotiation.
The managers statement has put that to bed and made it impossible from our side to move.
I'll be interested if we come out and say the deal was still afloat until those comments were made and put the whole thing back on him (the manager) and GWS.

Something fairly drastic must have happened to change the landscape the way it has

We are copping it for this and I understand why. It actually happens quite often, just not like this. Clubs just refuse to meet the terms of the trade and if no agreement gets done at the eleventh hour, the deadline comes and ‘no trade can be reached’. No backflip, no bad publicity (except perhaps Dodoro for Dunkley but that was absurd).

We haven’t done that. It’s day 4 of the trade period and we have just pulled the pin right now, way early. From a PR point of view we could’ve stretched this to deadline day, refused to budge on the 3rd rounder offer, threatened PSD and if they didn’t come to the table, so be it!

But we didn’t. We have been desperate to do our work early. Makes me think we have pivoted and have something else at play here, so there’s a reason for this.

What IS unquestionably poor is the manager’s claim that nobody from the Saints has spoken to Aleer since the decision. That needs to be rectified right now. It’s apalling to chase a player and sell a dream all this time, then pull the pin without a word to the guy or an apology or explanation. A bad look.

Glad we have got our other work done though. And Aleer was the incoming player I was least sure about.

Hope it’s a necessary move for another big play, either this year or next.

Jeez, didn't expect to see that statement from the manager. The fact that he's saying Aleer is livid at the club suggests the move really is dead.

I do not like this at all.

Makes me think SDK is happening and that this wasn't expected, but I dont think we should lead players this far and then blue ball them. Aleer has put his neck on the line, possibly severed relationships at GWS and has been given 5 days to make a life changing decision.

This isn't tough, this isn't ruthless, this isn't shrewd. This is a dog act. Hopefully we have a good reason for being a dog, I'm not sure if SDK is a good enough player to justify this.

Has taken a bit of gloss off of what should be a pretty good couple of days.

Im honestly hoping we're just playing GWS and Aleer and his manager are in on the act, but I'm doubtful.
What unmitigated nonsense.

Will Hawthorn expect the same type of backlash for courting Zak Merritt, then not following through on a deal that would get him to the club, after him nearly burning all his bridges at essendon, and having to walk that back? Will the Western bulldogs get any mud on their face for courting cal wilkie and not coming through with a sufficient trade?

Did jordan degoey get any criticism for stringing us along for months before finally turning his back on a trade and re-signing with collingwood?

There is always a risk of a trade falling apart. It's not the first time or the last time and Leek Aleer and his manager should really grow up a little bit.

Bartel saying the Giants wanted an F2. We said fine but we want X pick/s back.

They said no and we pulled The offer.

Good ol Jimmy.
Always in our corner.
Took the trouble to actually find some facts rather than just jumping in blind like the rest of these talking footy heads.

Adelaide too. They are pretty much a model for us. Bottom 4 to top of the ladder after topping up with mostly solid citizens. Then one of the better injury runs in years. Their developing KP forward turned elite too. That could easily be us in 12 months. Hopefully Higgo doesn’t turn homophobic.
Ahem... I believe Lancey boy might have some form there. Ha

It’s odd as we seemingly have completed our entire trade dealings at the half way point of trade period and seemingly are shutting up shop.

Which makes no sense to the behaviour we have shown leading up to this
