2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th

So basically we wanted GWS to give us a deal similar to what we did for Heath?
would have been a disaster if they offered that, as we would've had a very hard time explaining why we didn't take it

we have walked away from the player, not the deal

we've made a lame attempt to paint GWS as the villains for not offering a favourable trade but there was plenty of time left to haggle and the PSD is always there

to me, it looks like once it became apparent we wouldn't be able to get Marshall and/or Steele off the books, knocking back one of Ryan or Aleer was our only recourse to balance things up again. and we prioritised Ryan. nothing to do with the trade cost of Aleer IMO

a miscalculation and we are rightly getting rinsed for it. the club hasn't said much because it's pretty much indefensible. everyone will move on soon enough

All the haters that are laying into us for backing out of the Aleer deal would still be laying into us if the deal went ahead and saying that we paid overs for a player that probably wouldn't have been in our best line up so we would've copped it either way.

The haters were just looking for an excuse to lay into us after we've been so successful landing TDK, JSOS, Flanders and Ryan.
I hate the haters.
Top of the festering pile is Damian Barrett....I'm calling Jihad on him ...or a Fatwa....or whatever....if you see him in the street , abuse him!

It's easy to overlook how many negotiations we've been involved in. Besides TDK, JSOS, Flanders, Ryan, Aleer we've had to fend off strong attempts by rival clubs to land Nas, Windy, Wilkie and Marshall. Who know what else has been going on in the background? As it stands the only one we look like missing on is Aleer. No doubt the club had contingency plans in place in the event we lost some of them. All that's not including Steele's preference to stay.
Maybe it's a simple matter of available list spots. Of all those mentioned above I think many, including me, would have rated Aleer the lowest priority of the bunch. I haven't seen one comment on here from anyone crying that we've missed out on him.

Can you point me to a quote where the club has painted GWS as the villains?

The club hasn't said much... they've said nothing.

It's pretty simple for me.

StK had a price that they were willing to pay pick wise (F2 & F3 for Aleer & F2).

Getting the F2 back would allow them to get the Ryan deal done.

Not getting that F2 back meant they needed to make a call... & Ryan was the priority.

They let the manager know that we're out & he's loses his sh!t (because he loses his fat commish & has to get off his fat ar5e & do some work).

I wouldn't be surprised if we intended to come back to the table IF the Giants decided to relent after they had done the Clarry deal.

The manager blowing it all up has made that an impossibility.

The furore that has followed is a mix of clubs & media wanting to belt us for what we've been doing & the current media and social media landscape that catastrophises relatively minor stuff.

Yupp 100%

If our issue was the trade then keep everything the same and walk Leeky boy to the PSD for free.

If our beef is with GWS why are we pulling the contract lmao.
We haven't got a beef with anyone
Thankyou Gws for valueing Aleer more than we do
Byeeee

Unless something left field happens or we see an opportunity to jump in somewhere. I think Ro will stay--maybe Steele and/or Butler are potential last minute trades.
I said the other day that Steele smacks of a last minute swing from someone who feels like theyve missed out.

Hes a north special to me, come with 15 to go so they dont get caught with the their dick in their hands.

I think Steele doesn't want to leave a situation where success is imminent for a situation where success is not imminent. He's already ruled out West Coast.

I think he only goes to somewhere where he thinks he can play finals straight away.

Yeh i mean he might say no, but if they splash some cash and throw a decent pick at us, im sure wed all talk.

Beg to differ. There was a clear expectation that Marshall would be traded. Contracted or no is semantics because Aleer has an offer from GWS. He's just chosen not to accept it. Would be different if Aleer was OOC and unwanted by GWS. Marshall is contracted. Aleer has an offer. Up to him if signs it or holds out for a better offer. If the offer is withdrawn, too bad. People miss out on jobs because the landscape changes all the time. Aleer still has a $300k a year job if he wants it. Poor guy.
In what world was there an expectation Marshall would be traded.

Ross literally said he was contracted and he wanted to retain him. So I have no idea where that expectation came from that he'd be traded.

My wife: I just saw all the condolences on the AFL website, tributes from the Dogs etc….terrible news about Aleer dying.

Me: what? No, he didn’t die, he’s just probably going to get about $500k next year instead of $700k.

**Dramatisation, may not have happened
