2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th

Saints did a real shitty thing. It will be seen as Ryan over Aleer once the emotion is gone. Personally, I think it is a mistake and if Aleer goes on to fulfill his potential (I think he will) it will be another trade/draft choice that the rest of the AFL will enjoy rubbing our noses in.

If we are a top 4 side everyone will shut the **** up. We tried to do the right thing but we’re too far away from what GWS wanted.

For all the hand wringing going on, the fact is that the Saints have nailed the trades and free agency this year and even with no further trades will have had the best outcome of any team by a country mile. We can look forward to a great preseason.
100%. Our incomings are much better than our outgoings which on paper has made us stronger. Another preseason into the youngsters with King and Pou taking the field, the only way is up.

When he has played with King he has done nothing but get in the way. His game sense will had to of improved out of site to be the solution.
I still reckon we make him the fullback. Especially if we do hang onto Roma

I think we didn’t handle the whole thing all that well but we didn’t do a “shitty” thing. That’s over stated.

It’s a business and whether we decided Aleer was no longer a need (which I honestly thought was true when we got JSOS) or we genuinely couldn’t reach an agreement with GWS we’ve done what was right for us and our list.

I’m less sold on Aleer reaching his potential but if we’re playing deep into finals he can be an all Australian and I won’t care

At least we arent in discussions to send two first round picks to Norf for Simpkin
If Simpkin is worth two firsts Steele has to be worth 4.

Jimmy Webster’s shoulder should be worth more than him

The ideal fwd model for Caminiti is Brody Mihocek.

2023 comparison - the year the Pies won the flag and Caminiti had just walked in off the street and was playing as a sole key fwd (and part time ruck) for fair chunks of the season.

He'll be very good for us playing fwd next year.

Whose position does he take up forward

King
Marshall
Sharman
Owens
Higgins
Ryan
Phillipou
Hall
Keeler

Correct me if I’m wrong. But I seem to remember Liam Ryan being quite a pest when the Wet Toast beat us this year. Very dangerous. Looking forward to seeing him in action for us.

It kinda worries me if Hawks are willing to get rid of him to get Merrett. They're not stupid. Reality is CMac ended the season playing ok footy in the VFL.

Yeah I rate this. Seems very capable and somewhat excess to need for the hawks. Could definitely get him for under what he’s worth
Lewis is a first choice player at hawthorn when fit...unfortunately that's not very often

I agree that most young gun forwards take time, but they also show natural forward craft which Hammer hasn’t really.

You can see glimpses of what they might be if they piece it together. I said it a while back, but I think his ceiling as a forward is a Levi Casbolt style of mark and kick only.
I agree, if you compare Keeler and Hammer just on forward craft, leading patterns and general forward understanding. Keeler is miles in front, he just needs to go away and add some size and strength this off season

Casboult is a great comparison btw

I agree that probably only three of King, Marshall, Caminiti and Sharman play but Marshall is still no certainty to be here next year and King’s last full year was 4 seasons ago.

I didn't rate Aleer and don't think he was a list need after JSOS came across. If anything we need another 200cm key defender capable of filling the Howard/Caminiti role.

As far as list spots are concerned I would rather keep Shoemakers, just for his elite kicking and attacking game and put the heat on him to continually develop his contested game.

I think we all agree it could have been handled better, but it's now spilt milk let's move on.

Christ, I’d hope we are making finals if Marshall and Steele are staying.
Isn’t that the point.

With them we’re a better team, fit both play every week. If they get forced out then they become the sort of depth you dream of having.

Having said that I’d trade both if you can find a deal that actually makes us better, not a push and certainly not a loss. We’re out of the business of making other teams better for a bag of magic beans.

I think he could develop into a good player but he’s awfully similar to Tauru. Both big spoilers with closing speed. Both good at impressive marks but both a bit less clean with easy ones. Both iffy kicking out of defence. I just see it as hindering the player we already have.

Its going to be a tough choice, but if Marshall plays forward I think Owens or Caminiti will be the players who gets squeezed.

Sharman adds more flexibility and hits the score board consistently particularly when not being reqd to play a key positional role.

Marshall makes more sense. Two rucks still rarely comes off. Steele as depth is a very handy player. If they are on minimal wages it makes sense to hold though.

I really hope Geelong don’t get either player
They'll find a way somehow..

Aleer's been in the system for 5 years now...when does potential tag run out..

I hope we dont trade our F1 for CMac. As others have stated, he's not getting a game in a team that has a weak midfield and actively seeking people to improve it. The romanticism of him being from our academy doesnt make him worth more.

I'd rather we hold it for anything that comes up next year. And if nothing does, using it in the draft since we dont have one this year and 2027 is so compromised.

Exactly and we’ve supposedly front loaded them so the salary cap hit is actually pretty good at this point.

We’ve done enough now that we don’t need to be screwing around just to look relevant. We can keep talking and who knows what opportunities might open up.

We also have some players without a contract, depth, good servant local lad, promise with a huge left peg. We don’t need to pick through the clearance bin to make up the numbers.

I just realised the trade shite doesn't stop till next Wednesday
Plenty of time to ruin some more lives

It's going to be a long 5 days waiting to see what happens with Marshall and Steele. Doubt there's movement until Wednesday.

Just on Aleer, maybe his form when he came into the team caused a few alarm bells?
Didn't Ross go and watch Aleers last game to give him the tick of approval before we officially committed to him?
