2025 List Management Discussion - Part 4

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

I hope we dont trade our F1 for CMac. As others have stated, he's not getting a game in a team that has a weak midfield and actively seeking people to improve it. The romanticism of him being from our academy doesnt make him worth more.

I'd rather we hold it for anything that comes up next year. And if nothing does, using it in the draft since we dont have one this year and 2027 is so compromised.
He has some talent without doubt but Hawthorn are moving heaven and earth for another mid so clearly he’s not it according to them.

Another year playing two’s and he’s out of contract and worth what ? a late second rounder ?

Also we have how many young guys fighting for time in the midfield already, I’m a fan of a few of them and think persisting with them is the smarter play.

Agreed. I'm also unsure he would even be best 22 for us so we can't be paying a premium for a fringe player.

Keep working him for next year when he's OOC but dont pull the trigger now.

Not sure I agree, you can always get away with average players somewhere if you have good players elsewhere. Probably plenty of average tall forwards have played in grand finals - I vaguely remember us getting beaten by Chris Dawes who was never much better than a solid player.

A great midfield will make a decent forward a better player.

A great forward can't make a great midfield play better.

This whole “empathy” nonsense has gone completely over the top now.

Nobody has died.
He hasn’t suffered a career-ending injury.
His one-time suitors changed their mind or are not prepared to pay more than they think he’s worth.

He’s got a three year deal on the table still from the Giants ( who he was apparently crying over when he decided to leave) and possible interest from other clubs.

Heaven forbid he ever suffers a serious setback in his life.
Aleer will be traded next week i reckon...but not to us!

Didn't Ross go and watch Aleers last game to give him the tick of approval before we officially committed to him?
So they say but how would anyone not in the club know what he thought.

Can’t have been yes we must have him because we’ve walked. I could never figure out why we were interested in him and just assumed someone thought with his athletic ability we could turn him into a player.

I was shocked by how much we were supposedly offering and though we were getting him for a junk pick.

Your point is spot on, bullseye. If he was a lock and all but signed why was rtb off to have another look at him. This was also in season before we’d traded anything but after the free agents committed.

It All adds up to Aleer being a low priority possibility not an all but signed lock, things happen priorities change.

Anyway it’s going to be a big week and the clown show will move on.

It's going to be a long 5 days waiting to see what happens with Marshall and Steele. Doubt there's movement until Wednesday.

Just on Aleer, maybe his form when he came into the team caused a few alarm bells?
It had to of. Everyone else was concerned about it. Then in the last round a number of our forwards caught him out.

21 year old key forward that has played 56 games in 3 seasons, a good portion of those playing out of position.

Think it’s a bit early to suggest that. I’d suggest he is a fair way ahead of most gun tall forwards this early in his career.
I think suggesting he is a fair way ahead of most gun key forwards is a fair stretch.

He has played a lot of footy for his age, mostly due to injuries at both ends of the ground.

If not for King and Howard never being on the park he's probably playing most of those 50 odd games in the VFL. He has shown some promise at tines but has a long way to go.

You know how every man and his dog are saying this is a shit draft and clubs are actively trading out of it. Does that mean Jevan is ordinary????
I think the main issue around the draft is just how compromised it is. Our pick 7 for example will likely end up at 12 or 13.

It's definitely not a strong draft but in terms of talent I also don't think it's the worst.

I haven't followed it as close as usual but I wouldn't be moving heaven and earth to get a slice of Jevan yeah

Yep. Go watch the final against the Hawks. RTB was at that game and he would have been far from excited with Aleer's performance.

Anyone else find it interesting that…

Battle (left)
Marshall (wanting to leave)
Steele (has been asked to leave)
Wilson (yet to re-sign and rumours he may want out)

Along with Howard (previously shopped)

Are all managed by the same management group.

Of which the only client who seems happy with us is Wood and we haven’t been linked to a single Hemisphere client in return.

🤔

Certainly interesting. Given we’ve not lost many players the last decade it would seem more than a coincidence.

Either there’s an issue, or they’re a management group that know how to capitalise on player movement.

Out of all of them it's only Marshall and Battle that have wanted out.

Steele wants to stay despite being asked to look elsewhere and Howard seems more than happy here.

It would be really disappointing if we couldn't sign Wilson though.
