Also said Brisbane & Essendon have been talking in the background about Ridley, may pay Draper more to trigger Band 1 and Essendon allow Ridley to leave.

FA is such a stupid system.

But I love it, I really do.

Cal Twomey was pretty strong on it being unlikely. Do have to work out whether that is essendon fan cope or a much more well-connected journalist these days actually doing reporting rather than Hutchy speculating.

Cal drumming up interest to keep a job?

Please, please, please jump on any of the general forum boards and mention that the Eagles are an “artificial” club.
My understanding though it may be wrong - Eagles were a created entity for the AFL licence, just like the Crows, Port and even the Bears etc. Tho why Port had to be I do not get. Hence "artificial" just like GWS and GCS. Not like they were a WAFL club invited in.

Rest me case m'lud. I 'll let you troll that one Briztoon ;)

I'm obviously morally opposed to paying 'Drapes' any amount of money but Dom Ambrogio can win my loyalty back by yet another rorting masterclass.

Yeah, I personally can't see it happening. So we'll see how trade period goes

Having Drapes as an integral part of the rorting process only enhances his considerable reputation imo.

Ridley's done with the Dons as well but it's a hard sell for the faithful and how he disentangles himself from his contract and the club prevents a massive pile on from their supporters is what they're probably trying to work out.

If Merrett wasn't going it would be a fait accompli. Merrett dropping his largely unexpected bomb is the wild card.

That's the only real barrier to it happening I think. He's the sort of player that you sell high on because there's a risk he's got max 40 games left in his career. But a real hard sell when you are probably going to have to trade Merrett.

Risk calculus different for us given our first round pick will be eaten up by rorts.

What would most people’s view here be if we had a 30yr old contracted captain who wanted out and the list was arse and likely not to be in a window for years.

I wouldn’t necessarily be unhappy if the club could get some really nice draft picks and maybe a fringe player from a finalist team.
merrett has been the only shining light at that club for the better part of a decade.

it would be a pretty big gut punch to have a guy like that walk out in essendon's circumstances IMO. id rather keep a merrett type than have more magic beans in the form of draft picks.

Counterpoint: he's really annoying.

There's no doubt Ridley wants to come to the Lions because from his mindset perspective the climate and rehab process here is going to extend his career. And he gets to play in a great team with a strong culture.

The hurdles to that look too high but he wants it and we want it so that's a big start.

Pretty much vomit material to see AFL luminaries falling out of trees to get stuck into Merrett.

He's given his heart and soul for that club when most of the others weren't doing a lot for years and at 30 years of age in this era he's perfectly entitled to explore options for some team success in his final years.

He's got no hope of getting that where he is.

lol Jordan Lewis saying Essendon have no choice but to trade Merrett for whatever they can get.

I agree that they hate Merrett for the wrong reason.

The right reason to hate him is this:

Zach Merrett wants the bottom 10 players on the list cut so he can soak up even more of the Bombers salary cap:

Already lining the ducks up.

Merrett and Day into their midfield on top of what they have is an ominous proposition.

Maybe cope from me but while Merrett is good, I think he looks a lot better than he is with what is around him.

Day can only play about 3 quarters a season so you need to allocate them sparingly.

How did I end up on the Brisbane board?

It feels like I’m posting in a bizzaro world.

I honestly thought I was still on the Adelaide board. I’ve never posted on any other board.
Wait, this reminds me of that biblical story...something about Daniel in the Lions den I think.

If Essendon somehow hold on to Merrett then they have to replace him as captain. A club captain extorting his club every couple of years, including in contract, and then advocating shortening lists so that he can get paid even more? The culture problems at Essendon aren't just off field.

I think the only way he is at Essendon next year is if Hawthorn try to ‘win the trade’ and just refuse to pay the appropriate price and then it all falls over.

Hawthorn fans in the D&T board seem to think they have no obligation and Essendon just needs to roll over lol. Should be a good trade period. Glad we aren’t involved.

I am enjoying some of the Victorian clubs turning on each other in this trade period. Will happen more often in the future IMO. I mean they don't even need to move house, just change their work address. Or get a free hobby farm outside of Melbourne.
