Waxing lyrical after a B2B bby, but I do wonder how much more of a financial incentive a slightly elevated contract is compared to being part of the footballing immortality another three-peat is. Ah Chee must be getting big numbers.
Had his number on my back and his height marked on my wall as a growth target when I was a kid, no way Jono has his post footy career without the 01-03. A lot of opportunities post footy and they only compound the more successful you've been.

To be fair, Jono Brown has a pretty big personality and massive on field presence to go with his 3-premiership medallions. This certainly doesn't work for all players - but can help open doors if they already have something going for them. For players who don't have the charisma (or coaching talent), the post career earning potential probably doesn't match the uplift of the "last big contract".

These are our 3-peat heroes. Make your own best guess on post-career earning potential...

Wonder fi Henry Smith would put his hand up to move this off-season or fight for his spot. Draper's in, Fort is signed for next year, Big O is unsure about continuing - TBD. Henry may have a window early next season to show his wares until Draper is fit to go.

I felt bad for him, this was the year could've established himself and even turned to a premiership player. Missed opportunity for Henry considering we played both Fort and Big O in the decider.

If we don’t match the bid for Ah Chee it is my understanding that we will get nothing in return, noting our acquisition of both Allen and Draper.

What are we expecting from West Coast for Starcevich. It appears they may also seek to get him via FA now that they are getting assistance from the AFL, so possibly nothing as well?

Ah Chee isn't a free agent. Hasn't spent long enough at Brisbane to qualify, so Adelaide will need to trade for him like any other uncontracted player.

The reporting is that the AFL rejected WC's request to get him as a free agent without impacting their Allen compensation, so they'll likely trade for him too.

West Coast are getting an end of first round pick to give us for Starce

Probably a silly question but I assume if the Big O retires then his final year salary does not count towards our Cap next year?
It's generally complicated. The following is based off prior memory so there may have been changes over the years...

If he claims (reasonably) that he's retiring because of his back injury, he is eligible for the remainder of his contract but some or all can be paid out of this year's cap as well as against injury payments which get accounted for separately - anything left over would need to come from next year's cap.

If he just straight up retires like Joe, then he forfeits the remaining salary and it's completely removed from our call.

Seeing stories that WC and possibly the Dogs remain interested in Dev, but not much on Jimmy T.
I recall that a while back they were trying him out as a half back in the VFL which suggests he might still be wanted by the Lions?

Mentioned this before, but he was stated as a leaver if a mid-season trade period did exist earlier in the year.

If we draft another young ruck, his papers will be signed. Only way he can get into the team with Draper coming in, is to beat Fort as the primary/secondary ruck (depending on how draper is played). Don't think he can get in based on current form.

Went for a 8km walk around the puddles and pot holes this morning, which gave me plenty of time to think about lots of things.

One was Cals impending trade to Adelaide.

I wonder if we could swing a FF1 from Adelaide. As in a future first from two years ahead.

That’s potentially a draft where we have a couple of KPP’s that might be highly rated.

Draper won't be playing in round 1 given his Achilles; however, I wouldn't discount Fort yet. He had an incredible season and we won't lose much (if anything) keeping him in the lineup until Draper is ready. I hope Big O stays for another season, purely because Fort needs some covering and he is a good moral lifter for the group.

In terms of other players potentially leaving, I feel players like Starce and Ah Chee will struggle a bit more in their new clubs. Our culture and our whole club environment has made these players who they are and they are given the freedom to play in a way that other clubs probably wouldn't be able to replicate. Nicks isn't going to tell Ah Chee to play in the same way that Fagan tells him to play. Starce, on the other hand, will be going from the best team to the worst. You put Harley Ried in our team, and he's a much better player, but Starce will be the focal point of that team and I feel he could struggle because of it. Especially with his injury concerns. This is also why I hope Bailey stays here, because Mcluggage, Neale, Rayner, and Ashcroft take all the attention of the best opposition players - which allows him to run free. Yes, Bailey is frustrating and he has his poor games, but that would be exposed 10 fold in a poor club where he would be the main man that would be playing against the best opposition players.

I know it sounds odd, but i'm not really worried about the possibility of losing a few players over the years. We have proven over and over again that we're the best at replacing whoever goes out - even on the fly during the season. Look at what happened when we lost Starce early in the year. Answerth stood up and we didn't miss a beat. Look at what happened when we lost Kiddy. Zorko stood up. Payne? Darcy stood up. Hipwood going out has allowed us to discover Gallop. As long as we keep the core list of players, we will be able to replace anyone who leaves quite adequately. However, there are a few players who we shouldn't ever lose.

Would be a fair ask. 2 years out, will be a wild guess for both parties so worth a punt

Have had similar thoughts.
Adelaide doesn’t have a 2nd round pick this year (is with GWS).

A future 2nd round could be in the 30s. Not enough for Cal IMO.

An Adelaide future 1st for Cal and maybe Lions 2nd round is closer to what is needed. This could be very handy for getting Caylen Murray (although hard to plan for this far out trying to predict where he will fall).

I get the sense that Cal is a loyal teammate and great bloke…I think leaving will be one of the harder things he’s done in footy and he knows he will forever wonder what could have been

But he’s also a family man who’s had an interrupted career and he hasn’t earnt as much money as you’d think for a guy who’s achieved what he’s achieved

I totally understand him needing to choose the money on this contract…it’s sad all around but it’s part of being a man/husband/father…the family’s needs come first

He’ll always be a double premiership Lions champion and he’ll never get booed when he plays against us…I can see him getting cheered on and off the field tbh

I'd love Collingwood's 2027 1st rounder, Sidebum, Pendles, Howe, Elliott, Mihocek gone by then with little elite youth coming through, the cliff is on the horizon.

They're a Nick Daicos injury away from a fall every season at this point. Very much a one man band.

He's genuinely one of the great people in footy. He deserves his pay bump to set him and his family up. Equally, respect how firm the club are in paying players what we can afford and not paying overs to ensure the overall list is balance. It takes a lot of buy in and even then, you can't stop other clubs offering hefty pay rises to players to move and can't fault them for saying yes when they have their families to think about.

If anyone boos Cal at any point I will sick Elixuh on them. He's like Catman, but worse.

Cal is close with his extended family as well.

The decision would be a very difficult one but in the end a mature one.

He's my favourite player for a number of reasons so like many others I can only wish him every success if he decides to go.

I can't see us paying any current player on our list more than Hugh McCluggage is on which is reportedly 900/950K.

If clubs come offering as Twomey speculated 1.3 Million per season over 5-6 years Zac would be mad not to seriously consider it, very sad for us but when you have a best 23 stacked with elite talent you can not pay them all somewhere near their market value.

Players would be willing to sacrifice a certain amount of money to stay with us but 300-400K per season extra, WOW! hard to knock back.

Depends on the person I guess. It sounds like a lot, but you lose a chunk in tax. And then you have to weigh up if the increase in money is worth the risk of not enjoying where you work.

A five or six year contract for close to a million dollars a year is something that can set you up for life. How much more do you need?

The answer, it depends on the person lol.
