The Lions are probably paying too much for Draper and Allen but they do fill a need.

Adelaide and Eagles are probably paying too much for Ah-Chee and Starcevich.

I think we have sufficient depth to cover the two leaving.

Remember, Starcevich missed 11 games (R2-R12), and the Lions won 8 with 1 draw (Nth) and 2 losses (Pies & Demons)

Let's get some perspective.

How did we get where we ended up this year. Because guys on not much money stepped up and played a significant role when we were down for the count ,and those on good money are really motivated for success.

These young men are seeing money most young men would only dream of , but the smart ones want to play somewhere where they have camaraderie and inclusion and good prospects for success and all of the many benefits that flow from that.

Fwiiw the way player payments have escalated out of nowhere and the talk of a million up front as a sign on fee and 2 mill a year whatever to play in Tasmania of all places is unsustainable and clubs that get into bidding wars will really live to regret it.

The egos that get around footy clubs are starting to get well ahead of themselves when stockmarkets around the world are going through the roof and the delusions of grandeur are seeping their way into AFL footy clubs.
Fully agree. Don’t want to be paying silly money to a single player.

Premiership teams like the lions early 2000s and the cats…you need players taking less than they can get elsewhere.

Collingwood paid the price for overpaying Grundy. Got real messy with him, Treloar, Stevenson and Aish being moved on.

Players like Clugg and Berry have remained loyal, as have younger players like Lohmann and Morris who signed on past their initial contract.

Hopefully our recent success and environment will keep our core group together.

Fort was good this year, but he is getting on a bit at 32. With Oscars body the way it is and possibly retiring, I don’t mind the recruiting of Draper. He’s only just turned 27 during the week.

100%.

Problem is the people who think Draper isn't needed thinks that Fort can go through a season as #1 ruck, McInerny's back will suddenly heal and Smith is the next Gawn.

I mentioned the other day it sucks to see cal to go but I understand … I also said he gave me a great moment of that open run in goal at the 24 grand final… but that run down tackle on de goey is also right up there with one of my fav moments from him

Thanks Cal, thanks Starc… sucks to see you go but you owe us nothing…. Yes, I’ve been drinking and watching the grand final replay 🦁 🏆

Still a minor difference. I'm 190cm, and standing next to my 184cm friend is barely any difference to me. Likewise, they're both listed as medium defenders.
Your friend would have a different perspective on that.

Replacing Starcevich - in terms of like-for-like quality - is going to be very difficult.

It won’t be popular, but a one or two year stop gap might be Jed Bews. 186cm, has done roles in the past and would be gettable after playing 4 games this year. Brain should be given first crack, but Bews would be good insurance if he doesn’t come on as hoped.

No problems with that

Jacob Blight(DFA) has met with Collingwood, a serviceable KPD, would like him as another back up to Payne and Andrews, IMO would be an upgrade on Darragh Joyce.

Funnily enough, Jed Bews is one of the players who came to mind this morning when I was posting about possible adding a mature option for a Starce replacement.
