We have the money to match the Starce offer now if we wanted to. Nothing to do with Doedee, but you pay what is fair and what is within risk. Huge gamble to give Starce the deal he got with his concussion issues.

From all reports, even if we matched, he still wanted to "go home" and play in WA at some point, so the decision was somewhat out of our hands. He was gone regardless (sadly).

You’re going pretty hard on a team and a club who have just won back to back premierships and played in the last 7 finals series mate.

I get it, it sucks to lose players but that’s the nature of the beast, especially when you’re continually at the pointy end, there has to be tough decisions about to who to prioritise and perhaps who we can afford to lose. This applies to targeted recruits also.

Does that make it better for fans? Obviously not, but the club has given us a pretty good run the past 7 years, think we can cut em a bit of slack and trust they know what they’re doing, until they prove otherwise.
I would add that with retrospect it was dumb to try so hard to keep the same list in 2004, would not be typing this if we won the flag of course but that list strategy of trying to keep every player had us struggling for years afterwards.

I would taking winning 4 flags in a decade and contending that whole time over a 3 peat then a 6 year rebuild given the hypothetical choice.

I think Daicos has already said he would 'talk'. Listening to Nathan Buckley speculate on the type of player they want and the attitude they will have about actually wanting to be there I'd say we loose someone whom is a 'front man' a good media person and a good leader. I'd think Jasper is the one they will come after with the biggest offers.
I think they'll be after the Ashcrofts (both).

We'll make Fletcher part of our leadership group and towards vice captain by then. He's signed for 2030 anyway.

I think an injury free Starc is easily worth 800-900k. Unfortunately we do not live in that reality and he is very prone to concussion. Even still, with a list as stacked as ours, it's a lot harder to pony up that sort of money when so many others are worth the same or even more.

The club is at the list squeeze point. We have to be careful about who we give money to. Washy is easily going to demand 1mil+ on his next contract. Guys like Fletcher/Wilmott/Lohmann/Morris etc will all want bigger deals.

We talk positively about the amount of amazing young talent we have, which is true but the negative is they're all going to want big paydays around the same time. Kudos to the Lions management team if they can navigate the next few years well.

I don't get why picks are so highly valued... A gamble on the 19th most favoured kid, versus an established (amongst the best) lockdown defender. For me there's no chance a single pick would cover him, even pick 1...
West Coast supporters have this weird obsession with Lions getting unexpected returns and they aren't. I think in their world if you win a premiership your club need to be dismantled to the point of unable to even make finals and slide towards bottom 4 next year - then its a fair competition.

Bears/Lions 5 > Eagles 4. Money can't buy everything.

Would have had the money for starcevitch if we did not recruit doedee at this point he is looking like a bust
Wooda cooda shooda…

Joe Daniher could have been a bust if he had a relapse of his OP issues.

You can’t undo what’s been done. We’ve won 2 premierships while carrying Doedee’s contract.

Even with the money, I think it would be foolish to match the reported 6 year contract. Hopefully Starce is able to see out that contract - but we saw in the GF how “easy” it is for him to pick up a concussion.

I’m onboard with the list management team on this one.

Didn’t help that his lukoluko uncle asked him to pull his finger weekly.

I wonder if Jimmy Tunstill will be retained - I remember reading on here somewhere that after the final game of the VFL season Dev and Jimmy were clapped off the ground by the rest of the team indicating that it may well have been the last game for both as Lions players. No doubt there are still some further list changes to come given some uncertainty about Oscar, Linc and even whether McKenna will accept his one year contract extension.

I hope we keep him. My view is that he's about 12 months behind his peers in his development. In his draft year he was driving hours to training and really limited in his ability to engage with a 'professional' underage development program. I think he's shown plenty. Developing well physically and sticking tackles better every time he steps up.

I thought Linc had already resigned for another year?
