So where does the "momentum " come from?

The problem is to just improve by professionalism and just using the draft will probably never happen due to:

1/ Compromised nature of the draft as it stands.
2/ That Tassie coming just makes that even worse for many years
3/ Players more willingly swapping to "better" clubs undermines building via just the draft as we may keep losing young players, just as they are about to enter their best years.

And our situation is made worse at present as we lack players in their mid twenties who are good. We have a real hole there, which unless it is addressed could see us falling off a cliff if we lose a batch of our better older players. This is a huge problem for us.

"Improved professionalism" probably has helped us with potentially landing TDK in addition obviously to the money.

So we are rebuilding, and while Club does not admit this I think that they are really focussed on being "in the window" from 2028 on. Maybe 2027 if everything went well.

So current players who are not likely to still be good in 2028 on will need to be replaced by then. Which is why TDK is being hunted, as by 2028 Marshall will probably be past exerting a big influence in a game.

So current non-draft additions still need to be young enough to be at their best from 2028 on. Much of our better young talent should also be capable of playing really good consistent football by then.

Having said that if we lose Nasiah now that sets us backwards, and may maintain us being just a feeder club, rather than club genuinely building.

Keep him an land Aleer (no star but will improve our defense), and hopefully another player, then by the end of 2026 with King and Pou back we may well have a team that becomes more attractive to join.

You create momentum by building organically and finding some good cheap fill in talent. There are plenty of good players in the state leagues and under utilised players already on lists. You don't need to go for the big show piece just for the sake of it. There is a discipline to not chasing after shiny things for optics that shit run clubs tend not to do.

Once performance starts to improve you organically attract players to you.

On the draft. We are struggling because we were terrible at drafting and we made a conscious decision to let a lot of players who are mid 20s walk out to get more draft picks in. The compromised drafts are compromised for everyone. The Dogs and Hawks have built up in the same drafts we have. It took us 10 years to realise that paying for a head recruiter with expertise was a good investment.

Collingwood and Geelong don't seem to have a problem with older players and get a lot of experience and leadership because of it.

We aren't a feeder club. We are a club that isn't showing much sign of potential short term success. Until that changes or you can convince players that it has, you'll struggle to hold or attract players.

He was ok without doing anything much, both got smashed by Grundy. Moose with the extra height wasn’t embarrassed, kicked a goal and tackled well.

It’s really about Boyd and our history of backup ruckman, we’ve had some who tried but were well short of afl standard. If you have a quick look back you’ll see what I mean if you’ve forgotten a couple. Moose is at least potentially up to standard and if not we have, Keeler and Dodson.

TDK with an improving group of three is surely enough ruck depth. I was so happy when against the odds Dodson fell into our laps, he’s the guy we need to lock away with a three year extension imo.

I thought his height made us much less prone to dropping it straight into the hands of their tall defenders. I don't know if it ws coincidence but it was the first game in ages that it didn't seem like every kick inside 50 was cut off by an interceptor.

I think we probably aim to go into next season with only 3 ruckman on the list. We have 1 too many now, and TDK is coming.

TDK and Dodson are 2 of those.

What happens with the last spot is probably up to Roma.

If Roma stays, then Boyd and Moose are cut loose. TDK or Roma could both carry the load if either one goes down, meaning Boyd's spot is not required. Moose possibly gets a last minute reprieve, once trades and picks are done.

If he decides to leave, we keep Boyd as a mature backup in case of a long term injury, and Moose misses out. His role of "project big-man" goes to Dodson, who looks to have a higher ceiling and has probably shown more improvement in a year on the list than Moose has in 4 years. We play with a single ruckman, similar to now, until Dodson demands a spot.

As a side note, I don't consider Keeler in this equation, he's primarily a KPP who can chop out in the ruck.
Agreed.

I think we could maybe have 4 if one of them also doubles as a full forward spare in case of emergency, that would probably be heath or Dodson - but perhaps it’s already Keeler as you say.

Ari Schoenmaker was a first round pick until he wasn't. Ivesic went to the rookie draft, Mraz was a first round pick 12 months before the draft, Moraes and Gross were first rounders that dropped back. I'm sure all clubs had reasons for not selecting them too. Not sure many kids go to the draft not sure about their commitment. Basketball would have got him before the draft.
Kevin Sheehan said on the broadcast on the night that Dodson was slipping/slipped because of basketball offers

The risk that mid-way through his AFL journey he changes his mind and decides to take up one of those USA college basketball offers

Then there's the added risk of being an SA boy

Are we getting more worried about nas now?
A little bit, I think if he doesn't sign before our seasons finished I couldn't see him staying. The only comfort I have right now is that we haven't signed any of our other players, so I'm just hoping they sign a few together like they did with Wilkie Higgins and Sinclair last year or the year before.

I really doubt that's a thing still. You aren't going off at 25 to pursue basketball. Most kids that choose footy over college BB are doing it because they don't want to play and live OS. Footy lets them have a pro sport lifestyle close to home. If you don't quite make the NBA cut it's college then off to play in Greece or Serbia etc for less than an AFL player.

SA and WA players rarely head home in the AFL. The pull is stronger for some indigenous kids but even then not many go back home.

No, but perhaps check back in 24 hours

Yes, you putting Heath in the same bracket as TDK and Roma

Amazing.

Care to tell me where I said they were equal?

Please enlighten me.

Last I checked my comment was on the fact that if rumours were to be believed we get TDK in, Marshall is off to the Cats and the Dee's are sniffing around Heath.

That leaves Boyd, Dodson and Keeler as our back ups if TDK were to get an injury.
Not sure about you but I feel that is a recipe for failure.

Thus is goes to the argument about whether the 1.7 on the ruck is a good idea. Rather than trying to pick up one that is AFL standard but not necessarily a world beater.

Stanley getting destroyed today,i would say the cats will be desperate for a name ruck next year, whether its Roma or one of the others,Roma will surely be in big demand, for cats or whatever other team loses their man to cats,or geez would he love slotting into that number one ruck spot at the lions if big O is cooked

As far as tap are concerned I dont think Roma is any better than Stanley. They were both good when they could use their leap and until the changed the rucking rules a couple of years ago. Now its all about strength and holding their opponents away from the ball, which neither possess.

Again I think moving on Marshall would be the wrong way to go, whilst Max King remains so unpredictable.
