It’s there if we want it bad enough.

Some ****ing reward for being the only team to lose to ****ing west coast would be nice
Well if people want a genuine midfield buddy for Nas that is damaging and stands up in the big matches…

Now for the hardest part of any bored BigFooty posters Sunday afternoon activities: the cuts.

My early off season review (because it might as well be the off season...)

We've got a fair few games into the draftees of the last ~4 years, slowly cutting the list of veteran club servants (Seb Ross, Tim Membrey, Tom Campbell, Brad Crouch) and making calls on younger blokes (James Van Es, Olli Hotton, Nick Coffield) when needed. We went for a big dip into last years draft pool, which early on looks a good call (Dodson a young ruck doing very well in the 2's, Boxshall also very well in the 2's and played a few decent games when called up, Tauru the most exciting draftee in since King, Travaglia showed plenty to work with, wait and see with Said and Barrat) and probably have a couple more tough calls to make.

A few older guys on the list who would be in that range of "thanks, but we're changing the list balance" and I would put them below as my choice to move on:

Jones
Cordy
Boyd
McLennan

It would be good if we could sign some of these lads to our inaugural reserves team, for continuity at the lower level but also just a good chance to keep some of the relationships built and players at the club while bringing in some new talent.

Players I would entertain trades for as they're probably expendable but still play to the level:

Hill (unlikely)
Clark (probably unlikely, value is pretty low)
Howard (conditional upon getting Aleer and a trade offer, probably less likely than more likely)
Marshall (conditional upon getting TDK and a 1st round pick offer, could happen given the way the ruck merry go round operates)

In terms of who to bring in, TDK is the obvious one on talent and also a "free hit" as a FA. If we can bring TDK in and turn Marshall into a 1st round pick to a team near the top who fancy themselves (Eg. Geelong, Gold Coast) that would be producing a 1st rounder and costing us only in salary cap.

We've been heavily linked to Aleer, which I like, seems a bit similar to Tauru in terms of his vertical leap and spoiling. If we can get that done in a reasonably cost effective way, we've got a young agile tall we can either pair with Tauru and Wilkie (ala Cox, Brennan and Ryan at Freo) or it frees up Tauru to play as a forward. We'll likely need to make some trades to get this done, with an early first rounder pick and no 2nd round pick this year.

In terms of draft, that could see us with Pick #~4, pick #~14-17 (Marshall if we get an offer), no 2nd round pick or 4th round pick (traded to Bris and Essendon last year), a 3rd rounder and Essendon's 4th rounder.

If we go a future 2nd round pick for Aleer, that would be fair I think given Aleer's spot in the cue behind Taylor, Buckley, Himmelberg.

So, my best guess would be something like:

OUT

Cordy
Boyd
McLennan
Jones
(try and sign up 2 or 3 to the VFL squad)

Marshal (trade to Geelong? for pick 15)

Future 2nd round pick (trade for Aleer)

IN

TDK
Aleer
Pick #~4 (Duursma, Greeves, Grlj, Lindsay)
Pick #~15 (Sharp, Marsh, Hibbins-Hargreaves)
Pick #~45 (our 3rd rounder)(Pou 2, the sequel, Jevan Phillipou)
Pick #58 (Essendon's 4th)(Kye Fincher)

Feel like Webster could also retire given his couple of injuries recently, Howard I think will stay on for another year or 2 but could also be cut due to injury, Ronnie Byrnes is a bit in and out of the team and could also be a surprise moved on.

The other glaring omitted detail here is Nas, could go any club (.... well Port or Crows) and then that would drastically change the outlook of our off season, as you would imagine he would be at least two 1st round picks or a 1st round pick and a player.

But assuming we keep Nas, King finds some consistency after a ruined year, Pou similarly gets a good look at it and we pump another 20 odd games into the young core, think there's something to look forward to there.

FB: Stocker, Caminiti, Aleer
HB: Sinclair, Wilkie, NWM
C: Macrae, Steele, Phillipou
HF: Henry, Hall, Higgins
FF: Sharman, King, Tauru
FOLL: TDK, Wilson, Windhager

I/C: Garcia, Owens, Wood, Boxshall/Hastie/Travaglia/Hill/Collard/Dow/Carroll/Final spot chook lotto

Not a bad team, a ruck that has tap work AND around the ground presence, another athletic tall (Aleer), get our spear head tall forward back (King) and some emerging mids (Hall, Phillipou, Windhager, Garcia) hopefully build for us next year.

Make it happen Saints.

Crazy to think St Kildas lost 6 in a row but have one of the best players in the comp.

It tells you how bad we'd be without him

Vs Collingwood he was in discussion for BOG. Definitely top 3 or 4

Vs Hawthorn he was BOG with daylight 2nd

And again today. Daylight 2nd

That's 2 of the main premiership contenders... plus a finalist in Hawthorn. He's killing everyone.

Yet we're still losing.

With him on board and more development into Pou, Tauru, Travaglia, Garcia, Hall, Caminiti.... and a healthy King, and our future is bright. Many of these competitive losses against good teams become wins.

But Nas is the key that unlocks everything.

TDK isn't in the same league.

TDK to Nas is like comparing Ivan Soldo to Nick Daicos.

TDK offer is essentially pick purchasing.

$1m to TDK + $700-$800k Marshall is on.

In TDK and First rounder

Out Marshall

If Geelong win a flag it might be a late 20s pick in a shallow draft. Danger is it goes on Fincher if he rises top or GWS demand it for Aleer.

I keep telling myself to be patient. I want to win and hate losing. But I also know we have to redevelop the list and can’t stay in that mid table mediocrity.

Almost a given we have to go down to eventually head back up. We don’t have the luxury of years of successful drafting, trading and development. The so called past sins.

So playing the kids has some downside. Inconsistency for starters. Won’t probably be able to play 4 quarters, and will lose concentration. But we’re also flogging some of the older blokes.

Next year if we add in King, Pou, Garcia, Dougs amongst others missing from today, and possibly Aleer and TDK we become a different proposition. Plus potentially a high draft pick. And another preseason into all the young guys.

I see this period as a bit of a necessary evil. And I’ll keep telling myself to be patient.

I've got a good feeling about Nas after that RTB response at the press conference. Seemed confident. Probably reading too much into it but I reckon he's gonna sign or maybe has already.
Seems like cruel and unusual punishment to show us that he’s also an elite midfielder these last two weeks if they know he’s leaving (or a big chance to leave).

I didn’t need to know we had an elite, top 5 in the comp midfielder this whole time…only to lose him in 6 games time.

I hope so! I might have heart palpitations if he leaves!

We’re on the same wins as one of the bottom 3 sides and they managed to beat west coast over there when we didn’t.

I’d say it’s pretty ****ing close statistically.
Statistically we’ve had a much tougher draw than pretty much anyone.

I mean we still haven’t even played Essendon or North. Who’s running this debacle of a competition.
