"as a senior player..I was hoping we were going to top up on talent and build on the prelim.. get some senior bodies to add - and we ended up getting Jagger Smith..."

It all boils down to where the Club decided to invest and the messages that gave the senior players regarding where the Club thought the playing list was at...

Some senior players ( including Docherty) wanted more senior players - the Club decided yeah naahhh.
As the club should have done!

With a lop sided salary cap, we were not in the position to be adding experienced players looking for a pay day. Maxing out the cap year in year out is ludicrous.

With the events so far this “off season” we will soon be in the position to chase some decent profile trades/free agents. We were not until recent events. I am loving the efforts of our recruiters who have acquired “boyhood Blues” of late. Even our new Head of Football is a boyhood Blue. I have to think this is a strategy to uograde the “culture” and commitment. The players we have acquired have been “budget beauties”.

That mighty unfair for clubs. Specially middle-lower clubs paying 100% of the cap like us.
Why? the clubs provide the contracts. Pretty much every good player in the comp will have this. Historically the Eagles and * (under Dodoro) had blanket rules about not including CBA changes, however that was also a few years back so the rate of change was lower compared to the last agreement.

Everyone pays 95-100% (or 105% after banking) so that doesn't really make a difference.

Pretty insane if you think about it.

Above all it smells of senior players drinking their own bathwater AGAIN 'we would win it all if <insert excuse>' type thinking. We've been old enough for years that wasn't the issue....

I'm liking the Jagga decision way more now.

Doesn't explain the strong start to 2024 then sudden drop off in the GWS game after qtr time...

He was a senior player who, let's be honest here, didn't deserve the call up for the EF yet put his hand up to play anyway. He wasn't the reason we got belted, but he was def a liability out there.

Do I blame him for wanting to play? Big part of me thinks he should have put the team first, the other part of me understands from his perspective, he knew he didn't have many more chances and he went through so much during his career. Ultimately, I believe a senior player must always put the team first as hard as it is at times.

And I believe things like this, also contributed to tearing the squad mentality apart... although, he's not going to admit that publicly...

So only 1 year for Frankie fella. Came good late so fair call I reckon.
Gives him a chance to continue his good form in 2026 and prove himself ... after all - consistency is key.

Kouta was the Master at coming good and putting on a show when his contract was up for renewal.
Doesn't seem like Motlop read Kout's Bio on 'The Art of a Contract Renewal'
Shoulda been kicking more Goals in the last few rounds ... woulda been the smart play from Motsy

I stated my view ( now backed up by Russell and Docherty ) last year.

People can think it is all about Voss's "game plan" as much as they like- the uncomfortable truth is that the senior playing list at Carlton has never been up to making up for the weak tail end on field every week - and never will be.

The list has to be fixed one bit at a time - which is throwing out some players who don't want to be part of a 'rebuild/reset' - understandable, and trouble makers ( some of whom are fan favourites ) apparently worshipped because they are/were 'good people' or kick goals against bottom dwelling teams and fail miserably when it matters.

"Carlton FIrst" is a smart summary statement from Wright - meaning 'fit in or FOFF' - "we are looking to the future and investing in youth - because you lot have failed"

Yep teh Jagga decision was the proof in the pudding regarding teh CLub's thinking about the true situation of the list.

I hesitate to state my view on Docherty he was a senior member of a 'clique' in at Carlton - it is no accident that the new regime under Wright - saw him off - first.

I agree but you know my hesitation is around Voss and being able to stop the same thing happening with the next iteration of the list. 🤷🏼‍♂️.

At least we aren't Essendon.

If he’s as good as that Kouta fella keep the 1 year contracts rolling.

Wright has to find a better option - he has bought the time to do so...keeping Voss in helps the cultural change in at Carlton -Wright is dismantling the player power nuffery - in order to bring in any better alternative there has to be a clean deck.

I agree Coona - but the whole process can be expedited if people realise the true 'situation' of teh list and what it can reasonably be expected to achieve - experienced 'losers' have to go.

Absolutely.

Ready for a couple more from that group to be cut loose.

There is some scope for strategic signings this years to fill some gaps, but I am more than happy to go to the draft and show a little patience. I don’t want “mature” blokes, just because they are a bit more advanced. Really want an uograde as a distributor. If Charlie goes to Sydney need a Campbell or Roberts in the steak knives.

Would be happy to grab Dean and Ison along with a HB/wing rebounder/distributor, a small forward option and a tall forward option to develop.. Also want a rookie spot for Flynn Riley to develop in the ruck (Reidy may be OK, but need uograde)

I'm not surprised that there are a few outstanding player contracts to be finalised...

Weitering and Walsh will be the key players for Carlton going forward. Weitering was never part of the 'entitled' bunch and both he and Walsh just wants to be part of a winning team - and Walsh is young enough to see a reset through - all the way.

I am loving the Jagga Smith trade even more now.

Without it, we might have been saddled with another Saad, Acres, Hewett type with Dan Houston. Only way to move forward and be successful is to move away from those, quick fix for 3-4 years, types.

I am so bloody thrilled that Graham Wright has come to us. A football person who knows what he’s doing.

i'm with the club on this one, senior players had peaked imo

I'm certainly not with 'players' - (IMO) it has to be about the Club or it is about nothing.

Think it was Vosso move from the WCE that * was applying the same non-increases in their salaries.

I’d think we’d fill some depth needs with.
Trade
Buku
Fritsch
Chesser

DFA
Petrucelle
Blight

Draft
Best Available
Dean
Ison
Riley/Harding

Gresham (CatB)

Reidy - seriously WTF Carlton

If we trade Curnow then we can go for an elite player.
Scratch Fritsch, we are moving conditional players on.

Buku has been linked, as an athletic swingman. Good chance Gov gone, so a vacancy exist in that area.

Chesser is a reasonable option, hopefully past his injury concerns (ankle been surgically repaired now). Not sure he is dramatically ahead of some of our kids.

Petrucelle, nah. Has had enough chances. Speed alone does not cut it. Ball use the key. Not worth a spot. Delisted by cellar dwellers.

Blight, absolutely. Hard to fathom the delisting except they have an oversupply of talls, many being high draft picks. The mature gap players have been “rationalised”. Defender first, but can play forward or pinch hit in the ruck with his athleticism. Even managed a mention in Barrett’s Sliding Doors. Great option while HOF rehabs and Dean develops. Would save us draft capital. Big yes.

Flynn Riley at 208cm 21 yo ruck seems a no brainer. Harding is only 199cm so more KPP than ruck, don’t mind him, but only have so many spots. If we miss FR somehow, need a genuine young ruck prospect.

Dean, Ison plus one or two more draftees. I am not against Monahan getting one more year, but a free hit on Gresham as a Cat B would be good business (some elixir to add a few centimetres too please)

Frank was finally played in the role in which he had excelled inthe VFL
High level of performance in the firsts was no coincidence
