He was a good player, but I think Hickmott was better at Carlton.Mansfield

I think you are forgetting about a certain Frank the Tank !!! Originally drafted by Geelong and then let go.Nothing good ever comes from Geeelong
Haha yes but I meant dealing directly with them …I think you are forgetting about a certain Frank the Tank !!! Originally drafted by Geelong and then let go.

Viable option. Plug & play.Liam Jones for a year, anyone? Wants to leave Bulldogs an play at another team![]()
A bit late to get him back now. Should never have let him go. Good match with Weiters.Liam Jones for a year, anyone? Wants to leave Bulldogs an play at another team![]()
I say we go for it.
I know the last 7 trades with Geelong have tanked, but I really have a feeling about this one.
Conditional footballer that doesn’t do the team things. What's the deal with Ollie Henry being told to look elsewhere? Noting I'm weary of any player with talent that Geelong actually discards.... he may have killed someone, because they usually throw their arms around their own
If Jonesy passes the medical he'd be a reasonable type of temporary plan.Liam Jones for a year, anyone? Wants to leave Bulldogs an play at another team![]()
You know it just makes sense.
I don't think we'd ACTUALLY do it. Just thinking that would be the reasoning.I get that mate but I feel that's actually acting against our interests longer term.
Nobody, especially player agents, is going to respond "well they sure showed us".. they'll just nudge their players to other suitors IMO.
Longer contracts allow players more freedom to purchase a house, invest in businesses etc, they've also got the risk of being injured at any given moment hovering over their heads.A broader list management thought, not specific to Carlton but relates right now to Charlie and his situation. I wonder if we'll see a reduction of super long contracts in the coming years after the recent struggles of Petracca, Curnow and now Merrett. The idea that's been discussed a couple of times was the agents thought that "We'll sign the long-term contract but just force a trade if we end up wanting to move", but clubs are having none of that, which is fair.
My initial thoughts were long term deals were great for players, less so for clubs, as players would be secure regardless of form. Instead, it seems to have flipped, and clubs are benefitting while players who wanted to lock up security are finding out clubs will actually make them honour that contract.
I wonder, if the contracts continue, whether we'll start to see something of an Americanisation (and somewhat European) form of hold-out, where players refuse to return to the clubs and sit out instead. It's a fairly nuclear move right now given we only have a trade week, so it's a huge threat for the player to make and follow through on. If there's mid-season trading, I could see it being more likely.
In any case, players trying to have their cake and eat it too isn't working. I wonder what the fallout will be in the coming years.
When teams like Geelong want a star player to elevate them they just get them. Dangerfield, Cameron, Smith. Where do we stand? We aren't North Melbourne who noone good will go to. But we aren't up there with the best. We have attracted some good talent, but noone genuinely elite. If Geelong were in our situation, had dropped out of finals, they would be hitting hard with cleaning out some older and lesser players and bring in a few elite guns, as we have seen. What if Geelong wanted Butters? 100% they get him.
So Geelong simply break the salary cap and don't get caught?Simply because we drafted our elite talent, and with the salary cap, there's a limit to how many superstars you can have.
So Geelong simply break the salary cap and don't get caught?
