We got rid of a Fantasia and Durdin. Heaps?

Williams, Motlop, Ainsworth, Fog, White (maybe), Hayward, Evans, Cottrell, Moir... now Byrne?

That's without counting the Lord, Jagga, Cerra types who will spend time on a fwd flank.

Just feels like we were so focused on small forwards we didn't really do much research on the taller guys.

Having said that Byrne looks like an awesome kick so that is the #1 box ticked for me.

Come the end of 2025 season you could easily say we have had terrible quality small forward for 10 years or more. I do not rate any of them. Plenty of them and not any good ones. So this does make sense. Hayward and Ainsworth fix this to a point and we rely on Moir and Motlop to develop and improve which could well happen.

Evans played a few good games but don't count on him being there in 2027. End of next year Fogarty will be gone and I still think Cottrell and going to have to be very good not to be going as well. Williams in the same boat. The rest of the small forward clean out is coming. I don't think we will take White on.

He's a good get. Could end up being the quick, agile midfielder who runs down opposition and lose balls and breaks away from contests with pace and agility as well. Really valuable if he plays both midfield and forward.

I am expecting that we will trade out of our midfield group as well. Come 2027 this recruitment will make a lot of sense.

You don't pass over a potential A or B+ grade player because you have a bunch of B- and C grade players in that role.

Been saying for years that a clean out of small forwards is coming, half done this year and the other half will be done at the end of next season.

List will be balanced then and finally we should have some forwards who can play.

Like all the mentioned traits. Could not guarantee he will be a forward or pure forward. Looks very at home in the middle of the ground and we badly lack an onballer with his traits.

I think we have a good one here, not sure where he will play, perhaps a bit of both and that is very appealing.

Why I would have paid Fogarty out. Great kid and a goer but not a genuine small forward. In a reset I would have preferred a Walley or similar on our list. 2 spots for SSPs would have been ideal

I am tied between having those picks available to us next season or as you said, taking a player with talent this season.

I too don't see much value in keeping Fogarty, he's been made well and truly redundant. Likely won't play a game and will get delisted come the end of next season.

Even if we kept another spot available for a train on player or a rookie draft selection.

I would have liked Riley to take one of those SSP spots which would allow HOK to be used as the tall we are lacking up forward or down back

He is definitely being looked at. I can see him being picked up mid year

HOK will play forward in 2026.
Yep, just basic observation HOK/Skull added a huge amount of bulk last off season, but has not continued that trend. Showed promise as a forward as well as perhaps a recognition of his soft tissue episodes to be conscious if not adding too much bulk.

We are showing plenty of faith in him with our list management decisions of late.

Imo all we need around Mackay is another tall foil to make the opposition key defenders accountable.
Hok just needs to compete, obviously kick goals where he can and most of all bring it to ground for our now elusive forward line to get to work.
Providing a contest and kicking 20-30 goals. Doing the relief ruck work so Harry can be 100% forward.

From watching him play in all reserves games last year, i think he is still a some way off being given a rookie spot…

I like his athleticism and general tap work but he is still very raw, a little infront of Mirkov when delisted…

Hope he really comes on this year, would then be worthy of a rookie spot…

My 2cents worth..

Maybe, but I watched him in nearly all the reserves games last year, too. In my opinion, he is miles ahead of Mircov ever was and we may lose him if we wait until mid season.
Interesting comments on Riley in My Blue Heaven's recent training report (from 11 mins in + from 21 mins in).

He is already worthy of a rookie spot. Clubs including us are just tight for spots these days. Doesn’t pay to spend multiple years developing a young ruck only to miss out when he matures enough to be a factor at top level.

I will have no problem if the club adds him in the SSP period. He has already attracted attention around the competition, another (likely) step up this season will increase the risk of another club ā€œpoachingā€ him.

O’Keeffe has clearly been earmarked as a KPF, pinch hitting in the ruck, suggesting a third ruck on the list would be a good move. The tenure of Lewis Young will be seriously considered at the end of the coming season. Will we keep LY as back up at both ends and in the ruck? If no, we need multiple options going forward. It would be galling to spend three years having Riley develop around the top team, only to have to reinvent the wheel if he is taken elsewhere.

Our forward structure will be interesting. Harry plays best when he is not just a forward.
Will has some cred so opposition will need to be accountable on him.
Then it is up to the other forwards to make themselves a nuisence to the opposition.

Our mids have to be selective in their F50 entries now. I would suggest that they have to be able to assess situations better from now on and can not just rely on two contested marking forwards. Our forward entries have to be to our forwards advantage, so out in front so that they can lead onto the ball or at very least hold the it in the F50

I found his best work was done close to goal through the year. Didn't have the work rate and accumulation needed to be that high half forward/playmaker at the next level. Don't think he would have averaged over 10 touches a game going off memory at the start of the year.
From Rookie Me Central:

"There’s a lot of potential for Walley to become one of the game’s premier small forwards, with his athleticism and evasiveness regularly on display.....expect him to either attract a late bid in the National Draft, or fall through as a very handy rookie selection who could explode at the next level."
