Losing him and / or Sharp would be shocking.

You get pretty much nothing for them (3rd rounder probably), and both are very close to best 22 next year.

With Erasmus, I look at what Collingwood do with Long and I think he could play that role. You place a cheap inside mid in the middle, and have him get the ball out to the better players and take a beating in the process.

I don't want Young on the inside, I want him getting the ball from Erasmus.
Yeah, I don't know. If we got a future second for Sharp I wouldn't mind so much, considering he cost us nothing and, like Acres, is replaceable. Erasmus we should definitely keep.

I suspect he's already made a decision to stay, it shows in his footy the last six weeks. As noted above, it was fun while it lasted. Now we focus on paying Reid and getting a couple of good mature players into the club.
Never bought into this theory personally.

If you play poorly, you're not checked out. If you play well, you're not committed. Only rare cases like Bolton.

Acres, Cerra, Lobb all played well until they left, in fact Lobb had a career best season at that stage. Brad Hill too.

He is playing well because he is a good player.

Which is just not going to happen. Even the most homesick person isn’t turning down $5mil

It's certainly easier to turn down another $5m when you're still getting $5m.

A headline of Pickett turns down $5m to leave Melbourne. We aren't paying three firsts for that.

"The 24-year-old is seriously weighing up whether to play alongside great friends at Fremantle, including Quinton Narkle, or to remain with the Demons.
While Narkle is likely to secure a contract extension, there is still no certainty he will be at the Dockers long-term, given their star-studded midfield.
The Demons continue to work behind the scenes with its Indigenous welfare officer Matthew Whelan to try and make Pickett – who is in career-best form - as comfortable as he can be in the city of Melbourne.
Both Fremantle and Melbourne are aware a Pickett trade involving Luke Jackson is off the table, given the Dockers’ determination to retain their generational ruckman long-term."

Dees do a good job of it. Kozzy is allowed to go home way more often than other players and is allowed to Stay longer when the team go over

The only way I think we could pull this off is by a heavily back ended contract (e.g. post 2030 when Darcy and Cox are out of contract and close to being pensioned off). Bolton is end of 2029 and will be 31 and you would think his salary drops (if he doesn't retire).

For example, offer him 4-5 x 800k to play with his mates (Narkle, Bolton, Dudley), then a huge bump for 3-5 further years that will bring the total up to match/trump the Melbourne total ... (5 x 0.8) + (4 x 1.5) = 10 million.

I don't know how this would hamper our list management from 2030 onwards, but if we can't win a flag in the next 5 years, we will never win one.

Melbourne cannot afford both Kozzy’s $1.2M extension AND $1M of Luke Jackson. Seems like they’re pushing the issue with Kozzy either to lock him away or use the offered extension as trade leverage.

If you’re Freo, would you rather Luke Jackson or Kozzy Pickett?

Luke Jackson over Kossy Pickett every day of the week. Both are exceptional players and I would love Freo to have them both. But that's highly unlikely.

Those are crazy numbers. Almost double what we’d offer. Can’t be too upset about that
Yep,
The 1m for Bolton a year now looking like another bargain. We're on the way to turning into Geelong, I hope we have some farming land lined up and some Dale Alcott house packages.

"The @freodockers were in the thick of it, and got close. Financially also."

That part is almost the most significant part. Obviously to some extent 11th hour stuff given past reporting that we were offering significantly less than that. With no real big fish left to chase for a while, do they get more aggressive with players a tier or 2 below? Bank that into keeping players around? Front-end deals/roll cap space over?

I'd trade Darcy for the extra capital, though that idea may have been how we got close financially anyway.
