Eagles should just pop pick 2 for Chad Warner.
If Warner wanted to go WC then he wouldn’t have re-signed. Don Pyke was all over Warner like a rash and he decided to re-sign for two years. I know a board member and WC were pushing hard for Warner earlier this year like really hard. Yet he declined and re-signed.

We are some chance to get Warner the conclusion of his next contract. Just a feeling.

That's the third playing I've seen Sydney trying to push out to get curnow.
Reckon that two F1s and a choice of a suitably valued player from Sydney (with later picks coming back) get the Curnow trade done.

Carlton won't be interested in a first rounder this year and if anything will try and move pick 10 back.

Sydney don't have a second F1 and and Carlton don't have later picks so I reckon other clubs get involved. Looking at Collingwood, West Coast and Essendon as potential clubs to open up the Curnow and/or Petracca deals.

Can see West Coast and Essendon really chasing Pick 8 and reckon Collingwood might try get into the first round this year.

Between these reports and chasing after Simpkin it’s become even more obvious the AFL changing the eligibility around having to take 2 firsts in 4 year period was …absolutely, centred around appeasing Collingwoods wishes)or should I say demands)

Gee how nice it must be as club to know that when not even league rules based around a fundamental of supposed competitive balances such as the ability to trade draft picks can be changed to suit your clubs benefit simply by giving AFL HQs nuts just gentle squeeze

Sydney are desperate to get Curnow at the expense if their midfield. Sounds like a great plan.
Yea was thinking hopefully the supposed great bloods culture takes a hit here with a few of their bigger name players being tossed around for bait

And by the time warners contracts up next the AFLs darlings are stuck in no man’s land

Why would we draft western Australian players when the draft is basically our only realistic access to the Victorian talent pool? If we started doing that we might aswell forget about ever accessing non WA talent. The WA talent pool has never been weaker to top it all off.

Thankfully the club doesn’t think like this.

Fred Rodriguez can go to any club not called west coast eagles in this draft.
We can draft a talented young Vic kid instead.
Then in 3 years time we can trade back in Fred (if he’s any good) and the net result will be more talent at freo if we can keep whatever vic kid we draft too.

The biggest competitive disadvantage freo have is a lack of access to the same talent that our eastern states rivals have.
I actually think other than academy kids - we should actively avoid drafting western Australians.

Consider the cost of three Western Australians we traded back to Freo.

McVee, Bolton, Jackson. We only need one pick to get Rodriguez now, not a first and a second by averages.

What’s the cost of trading Murphy Reid to the club if we had the option and chose Bo Allan?

We’d never know because he wouldn’t even look our way.

We are preserving our salary cap for one final big fish. Draft picks will be a bigger issue for us. He's a top 5 pick and Wallsy can't trade for shit. Can't see us getting that type of capital without trading someone out.

I would counter the argument that losing non WA talent costs us advantage but we've had way too many WA players traded out

Since JL took over:
Traded in
Clark, Jackson, O'Meara, Bolton, McVee

Traded in then traded out
B. Hill, Hogan, Acres

Drafted then traded out
Logue, Henry

Free agent
Hamling

Before McVee we'd actually lost more WA players than we've gained, although talent wise it's been a net positive

I know I should let sleeping dogs lie but you can't look at the WC Bris pick swap in isolation of McVee. I think everyone agrees there was a premium paid by us in the pick swap, it's just a matter of opinion on whether you think it was worth it or not.

It seems there were three rough pathways available to land McVee:

1) Something like trading pick 12 for McVee and 27 (I'm assuming Melb would have accepted this). This would have left us with 27 and 33 as our two usable picks. Rightly not pursued by Freo.

2) The pick swap. Freo get trade done early and our first two retained picks are 19 and 46. I completely get why many feel we should still have a pick in the 30s but if we think the draft falls away badly after the first 25 and we want to protect our 2026 draft hand then this path trumps above. I know everyone thinks we were a circuit breaker for Bris WC but I am not so sure that we weren't the aggressive party to obtain a pick that was a circuit breaker for our own trade ie I think Bris and WC could have done something without involving us.

3) Hold the line and say take pick 33 or walk him to PSD. I don't like this path as it creates an unnecessary void where we risk not getting McVee, as much as others don't believe this would have been the case.

For me on balance I think Walls got this right. Pick 23 in a weak draft is a very cheap price for a quality player. The premium (which in my view is not as massive as it is being portrayed by some) that was paid in the pick swap is worth removing the uncertainty on McVee, especially in a supposed weak draft that is heavily compromised.

Just on the trades that were moved on…Hill a massive cancer on the club. Media had in for Hogan before he signed and drove him east. Logue and Henry 🥔 Hamling and Acres were actually solid trade ins but injury and low ball contracts sent them east.

Appreciate Hill though. Gave us the best years of his career then ****ed off right in time to give us the guys who’s won 3 bnfs by 24

I saw your mate Logue last night, could be some truth to the rumours.

You know what’s worse than paying a high trade price for elite talent to come to your club?
Having limited to no elite talent want to be traded to your club at all. Which is exactly what would happen if all the players you mentioned were drafted by freo.

We can’t even trade in a B22 role player that isn’t from WA for christs sake!!

As for Merrett, Petracca, Curnow level types? In dreamland maybe.

We need more Young, Serong, Murphy Reid, Sean Darcy, Brayshaw standard players in the draft.

Then collect your Clark, Jackson, Bolton types later via trade.
